Washington State and Oregon State football programs, both members of the Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12), have rich histories and play pivotal roles in the college football landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Despite not consistently being among the top-ranked teams nationally, these programs have had significant moments and contributions to the sport.
Washington State Football
Washington State University (WSU) is located in Pullman, Washington, and its football team, the Cougars, has a storied history dating back to 1894. The Cougars have experienced various periods of success, most notably under head coach Mike Leach from 2012 to 2019. Leach’s “Air Raid” offense turned the Cougars into a high-scoring team and brought national attention to Pullman. Under his tenure, WSU achieved multiple bowl appearances and a memorable 11-2 season in 2018, finishing ranked in the top 10 nationally.
The Cougars' home games are played at Martin Stadium, known for its passionate fan base and unique small-town atmosphere. Despite the challenges of recruiting to a remote location, Washington State has produced several NFL talents, including quarterback Drew Bledsoe and wide receiver Brandon Gibson.
Oregon State Football
Oregon State University (OSU), located in Corvallis, Oregon, boasts a football program with its own distinct legacy. The Beavers have had notable successes, particularly under head coach Dennis Erickson in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The 2000 season was a highlight, with the Beavers achieving an 11-1 record and a dominant victory over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing fourth in the nation.
Reser Stadium, the home of the Beavers, provides an energetic environment for college football. The program has produced several NFL players, such as wide receiver Brandin Cooks and cornerback Steven Nelson. Despite facing competition from regional powerhouse University of Oregon, Oregon State has managed to carve out its own identity and achieve significant accomplishments.

A new PAC 8 not only would be less expensive for a network, but it would keep them in existence. This would allow them to watch the ACC and either make a case to jump, or a possibility of picking off a couple of dissatisfied teams from there. Obviously not Clemson or Florida State, and its a reach, but who knows what might happen if one of the networks steps in. I mean, who thought we would be here two years ago?

Having eight schools will meet NCAA requirements. Having eight schools doesn’t help with TV Networks because they want contents for their channels. In today college football having eight schools doesn’t help them competing with other conferences especially if they have 16-18 schools. In this era of college football any conference will need to have at least 10 schools. I prefer to have between 14-16 schools

There doesn't seem to be a good answer or result. Adding SDSU, UNLV, and CSU to the PAC is a good start...but then what? Boise State has different ideas. Other MW schools are smaller programs. I'm thinking UTSA, North Texas, and Tulsa could be an option, where none exist.

I think Oregon State and Washington State are gonna be stuck in limbo until the ACC gets raided. What I could see happening at that point is we see a new 16-team conference form, a combination of PAC/ACC leftovers and G5 promotions. My guess? Oregon State, Wazzu, Cal, SMU, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV and UTSA in the west; Wake Forest, Boston College, Tulane, USF, Coastal Carolina, Memphis, App State, and South Alabama in the east. There's a few schools I purposefully excluded. San Diego State and UConn, I believe will eventually get recruited by the Big 12. Boise State, Air Force and Wyoming will want to stay and rebuild the Mountain West (though should the conference's western portion seek expansion and MWC rebuilding efforts bear little fruit, expect these schools to be first in line). James Madison is a school I considered for the eastern half, but I think they're too new to FBS football to include.

USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon (among others) were under no obligation to stay in the financially-challenged Pac-10 just so WSU and OSU wouldn't get left behind. i go to a mountain west school, and i was never into college sports/conference history until i went to college. at one point there was something mentioned about “what the mountain west did the the wac”, could someone clue me in on what that actually means? i would like to see the PAC-12 merge w the MW since they’re geographically close. there’s no reason pacific based teams should be competing in-conference with atlantic based teams, or pacific teams in-conference with inland/great lakes based teams. osu and wsu would make great additions to the MW. i think a merge would bring more media money, and allow them to compete against more than just each other for most of the year. i won’t go as far as saying that if the merge goes through and enough media money comes in (which it won’t bc no one watches the MW) that the former PAC-12 teams will come back and try to rejoin the merger. (whatever name it may have) but i think it would be enough to get them at least thinking “oh they’re bringing in money now, why not rebuild the conference bc geography and save money on travel?” i’m well aware of how naïve of a take this is, but it’s purely speculation and a case study on hyper advanced mental gymnastics. again, i’m still not up to speed on my own conference’s history, much less the PAC-12 since i just got into college sports, but since money is what split the conference i imagine that’s what would incentivize the other schools to rebuild it

The WAC was the present Mountain West. It expanded to include Rice, SMU, TCU, Fresno State, San Jose State. Then BYU did not like the move and they broke away to form the Mountain West to reformulate the WAC as it was without UTEP and other others and destroyed those programs for a decade or more.

Why stop at 8 arbitrarily, with no cushion, with less content for media buyers ? The entirety of the MWC now, after last season, all look good to me as adds to PacX, Big12 or ACC. The only question marks (each has redeeming qualities): Nevada-Reno New Mexico Wyoming Otherwise, you want all these: 1. Colorado State 2. Boise State 3. Airforce 4. Utah State 5. Fresno State 6. SDSU 7. UNLV 8. SJSU ______ And I'm really liking: Wyoming New Mexico Nevada-Reno is the biggest question mark; followed by affiliate member: Hawaii (but you get to play in Hawaii !!!) Consider adding: New Mexico State Northern Arizona Montana Maybe: North Dakota State South Dakota State South Dakota ? North Dakota ? And of course add whomever you can from AAC et al, especially: Tulane, Memphis, Tulsa, Rice, UTSA, UNT, La Tech, maybe: Toledo and Ohio, if not merge with AAC & add select others.

Tell us you have no idea who generates VALUE on a TV Contract without telling us. If the PAC wants to just be the MWC + 2 former PAC schools they can just JOIN the MWC. The PAC wants to be something BETTER than the MWC. They cannot do that just by adding the whole MWC. They cannot even do that by adding MOSTLY the MWC. They most go NATIONAL to do this. They need National Brands. They need Army, Navy, Air Force, Tulane, Memphis, San Diego St to go with Oregon St and Washington St They need SOMETHING LIKE THAT or better. The BIG12 will: 1)invite Miami, Louisville, UNC, and...Stanford who will help negotiate a deal with Notre Dame and should: buyout the MWC and AAC media rights. EAch conference will get two relegation spots a piece. The aforementioned 4 plus current 16 will be permanent members with 4 spots going to the best of the MWC and AAC. The BIG12 would be the biggest player in CFB as far as media is concerned. Why would Boise State accept a role as a relegatable school? When (because I still believe it's inevitable) the ACC gets nuked, I think the B1G and SEC get four each. That said, I think all three of FSU, Clemson and UNC go to the SEC- it makes geographical sense, has similar money lines in what is technically a smaller conference, and it means student athletes are making trips from Clemson to Lafayette as opposed to trips from Tallahassee to Los Angeles. ACC schools tend to care about more than just football, and for athletes in sports besides football, joining the B1G is a nightmare. So FSU, UNC and Clemson go SEC, and they take UVA in order to expand their regional footprint and maintain an even number of schools. This means the B1G loses out on all three of those brands, but they rebound by finally wooing Notre Dame into the conference. Once the Irish are in, B1G expansion will be about adding new markets with new eyeballs. To this end, Stanford (Bay Area), Georgia Tech (Atlanta) and Duke (Raleigh-Durham) are the best fits, and they also bring with them an academic prestige that the B1G is known to look for. Stanford reinforces the conference's western wing and brings in the last of Notre Dame's major rivals, while GT and Duke give the B1G footholds in the South. Now, the Big 12. Yormark can't afford to be too picky with the remaining 10 schools, and this bout of B12 expansion will be all about going east, making sure that schools like WVU, Cincy and UCF aren't on an island. The Big 12 is also not shy about adding numbers to compensate for the lack of blue bloods. So they add six of the ACC's remaining ten: Louisville, Pitt, Miami, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse. Miami becomes a travel partner for UCF and gives the Knights a regional rival in Florida, and NC State puts the Big 12 in the heart of Raleigh, while the additions of Pitt, Louisville, VT and Syracuse pair up with WVU and Cincy to create an eastern pod that's essentially just Big East 2: Electric Boogaloo. This leaves Boston College, Wake Forest, SMU and Cal as the four oddballs, the Oregon State and Washington State of the ACC raids. I also know that Yormark has stated a desire to have schools in all four conferences. To this end, I think the Big 12 seeks a smaller addition of two schools, one out west and one in the northeast. Enter San Diego State and UConn. SDSU slots into the B12's western wing next to the Arizona schools, grants the Big 12 access to the southern California market, and importantly gives the Big 12 a presence in the Pacific time zone. UConn, meanwhile, would be part of the conference's eastern wing, and would most likely become a travel partner for Syracuse. These eight additions (UConn, SDSU, Miami, NCST, Lville, Pitt, VT, Cuse) also bring with them some serious basketball firepower, something we all know Yormark is after.

They check a number of boxes for the Big 12, check zero boxes for the B1G, and with the addition of Utah, BYU and the Zona schools, they wouldn't be geographically isolated. They're one of the biggest brands in the MWC, and the only one that's been confirmed to want to leave. Hell, adding them makes for a perfect excuse to also grab UConn and keep the numbers even. Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems like SDSU to the XII makes too much sense to not happen.
