I’m a long time foster parent and I specialize in newborns who come out of the hospital addicted or having effects. When I see a mom work hard through treatment, do everything she has to, and I get to see the happiness on her face when all her hard work pays off, and she gets custody, it’s amazing. I’m also always willing to stay involved, if mom has questions, needs respite, etc. Everyone deserves chances to improve. ❤

Thank you for being so amazing. So many people are judgmental and think that every baby should automatically be taken away permanently from these mothers. It sounds like you are not only a person with a big heart, but also a very smart, compassionate person. Your foster children, and the parents, are very lucky to have you.

My 6 year old was born addicted to meth. We have fostered many babies, and worked closely with the Mothers and some Fathers. It changes your perception once you work with these Mothers. We got 37 children home to recovered Mothers. My 6 year old's parents lost their battle with addiction. Addiction has only victims all around.

Dr. Maxwell explained this process so concisely and his compassion for the mothers is honestly so nice to hear. If more people thought the way he did about addiction and how we can help people caught in the disease process, we could actually start to fix the opioid crisis.
@NicoliRavioli117
@NicoliRavioli117 8 ай бұрын
I think that is the main road block to ending the drug crisis, is peoples’ stereotypical biases and judgments. People don’t consider that there is SO much more to the story than people just “wanting to get high”. Especially with the opioid crisis, many people were first introduced to the drug by their own doctors for legitimate pain. Many of these judgmental types believe that addicts deserve whatever pitfalls come to them in life and they should be left alone to suffer it all. Then you have the ones that still refuse to believe that it is a disease. And as these attitudes continue, the drug epidemic continues to rise and we ALL suffer from the consequences; whether that be from crime rising, higher taxes, or being personally involved w/a loved one battling addiction. I just wish that once and for all we could try something different. The criminalization on drugs has failed. That would be like trying to fight diabetes or heart disease by throwing the victim of such diseases in jail. How much do you think that would help??? It wouldn’t, at all. And that is pretty much where we are at with the drug epidemic. I pray that people can open their eyes enough to realize that even if they DON’T agree that addiction is a disease, that they could at least admit that the way were handling it has failed miserably. Another statistic is that something like 70-80% of addicts had some form of sexual abuse as children. How people can still be so judgmental with facts like that, I’ll never understand. Addicts are people who are hurting so badly emotionally that they’re willing to risk killing themselves just to take the pain away temporarily. These people need help, not hate, judgment, and definitely not prison. Now if they commit crimes such as robbery to get the drugs, I believe they do have to pay for that crime. But the people whose only crime is being found in possession of small personal use quantities of drugs, those are the ones who shouldn’t be sent to prison just for that. I hope one day things can change, but I’m definitely not holding my breath. The comments I see on KZfaq alone let me know that there’s still so much ignorance out there regarding addiction.

These babies born addicted do a high pitched scream like I never heard come from an infant. It is heart breaking how much they suffer. Makes me sick that these women allow this to happen. A lot of them act like they don't even care. It is obvious they are still HIGH. Use birth control if you are a druggy. Shame on you. A lot of you already have children you don't seem to care about and don't have custody of and here you are doing it all over again.

Plus their mothers are going through their own struggles. I was born addicted and my mother never really bonded with me. She just kept saying how i cried all the time and never stopped. That same dynamic of her coldness towards me continued into adulthood. I am not making any generalizations b cause some mothers bond well but I suspects many don’t. Many are either returning to their drugs or going through withdrawal so they never cuddle and nurture the baby like they should

We're a lot closer now though. She's so much like me at that age, it's crazy. 😊 I've had so long to think about regrets that I'm determined to be the best I can be for her now. I’m glad she’s trying to turn her life around, but I automatically detest people who hurt children. Having to go through withdrawals from ingesting it in the womb is one of the worst pains a baby can go through. I can empathize with addicted mothers but those babies had no choice in what they ingested. Addiction is a disease, but a conscious decision was made to do the drug or drugs the first time.

The sad thing is, if she got on subutex immediately after she got pregnant rather than starting at 30 weeks, that baby likely would’ve been born without withdrawal. Many are. If they do it’s typically less severe. Whether she knew about that or not, I don’t know. I’m glad she did eventually get help though, there are so many moms who don’t care and don’t.

Do you know anyone who has been yanked away from their bio parents? Honestly even terrible bio parents (which this mom clearly is not) the kids are permanently traumatized if they are taken from them. We need to do everything to keep children with their bio family- it would be easier if that wasn’t the case- but there is a biological pull towards your bio family and it lasts into adulthood. Causes severe trauma for most to lose bio family .

Just a little correction, babies aren't born addicted. They do go through withdrawal, NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome). When a person is addicted there is more going on in the brain than just physical withdrawal. It affects the parts of your brain that control judgment, compulsion, the reward system, joy, anxiety, and alot more. This is why it's not just a matter of physical withdrawal that keep people locked in this disease. And it's also why you don't see babies crawling around seeking drugs. We need to watch what we say because it makes an impact. There is alot of stigma that keeps women from getting medical care or treatment already. Working with moms in WV like her ismy career and my passion. I feel really lucky to get to know the incredible women I work with! I am also a mom in long-term recovery myself. Moms do recover. ❤

you're trying to show off your knowledge in a way that won't garner the validation from the people that matter. And on top of that you are wrong. So wrong that it's laughable. Do you know a baby isn't crawling around looking for drugs? Because It has not learnt where to get it from. It can't even comprehend what is going on. Compulsion, judgement and all these things you mentioned, as well as the behaviour rgearding drug seeking are only not present in the baby, because it has not learnt yet all the things that someone who is older with addiction, has learnt. All it really knows how to do is feel pain and screm for help. why is the baby not crawling around looking for crack?!?! lol. that is hilarious! For all intents and purposes, this baby is addicted. I am not sure why someone would want to argue otherwise. The baby is dependant. You are just arguing about semantics. You are being...pedantic, and showing off about it.

God bless these women for having the strength of confessing their drug usage. A lot of the girls that I went to high school with her in the same scenario and what’s even more heartbreaking is the fact that they were teenagers as well. Those young mothers used to really verbally harassed me. And I mean I was in a dark headspace, but I didn’t realize at the time what allowed them to go into that state of need to verbally abuse, me. I was only 15 when the toxic verbal abuse started. Hurt people hurt others but those girls never ever deserved what they’re going through especially as young teenage mothers. Words cannot even describe the amount of sadness I feel for them, but words can describe the amount of bravery and courage. These women have to confront their past, and to strive for the fact that they want to write their wrongs and become better mothers. 10 years have passed and while I am a little frustrated and disappointed that 99% of the girls that I went to school with her in almost identical scenarios as the women in this video. But they are much younger when they enter motherhood. And although I am a little irritated for lack of a better term that they didn’t invite me to their a 10 year high school reunion party. I could see where the awkwardness could come from. I just hope and I pray that these girls find the right associations to help them. I hope and I pray that somehow, these girls find the correct form of assistance to help them. That they have a chance to get out of poverty.

As far a doctors need to care, it is a disease but the rest of us still know that it is a self imposed one. Doctors are there to treat disease not make value judgements. A lot of diseases are consequences of bad lifestyle choices, even cancers. The stigma is not helpful in most cases. These mothers put off getting help because they are scared of judgement, potential criminal charges or losing custody. If we created an environment where this mother wasn't so afraid she could have accessed help in time for her baby to not be born as badly impacted by drugs. Harm minimisation is the goal.

I want to add an additional bit since my time working with these children special-needs kids. I was a teacher from age 18 to age 26. These kids are angels. Their parents were just a bunch of very hurt and confused teenagers. They honestly thought that making fun of me. Because I have a high functioning set up learning disabilities. And for reasons that still escaped me they honestly thought my family had a lot of money. Hurt people hurt other people. And as a former teacher, it hurt me to know that I liked the credentials to help those special-needs kiddos. It hurt me to see that their parents were so desperate for somebody or anybody to look after their special needs children. That the pressure of looking after their special needs children all fell on me. pair that with a lady who ran a church preschool. Whose daughter is in the same scenario. But unlike the kids who I went to public school with. Had a very entitled personality. She wants her mommy to raise her special-needs baby. She doesn’t see the harm done to her special needs baby. And her mommy wanted to outsource her unwanted grandchild rearing to me. A lot of these girls parents want to outsource their unwanted, grandchild or children rearing to me, because despite the fact that all other former stereotypical beliefs, put up on my family, have since disintegrated. I feel sad. That all these teenage mothers. Who used to ruthlessly probably abuse me. No me as the girl from a well respected. Well educated Indian family. So their mothers and the grandmothers to the special-needs kids. want to outsource child rearing to me. I can only hope and they pray that he is brave girls get opportunities to not only afford the expensive healthcare and medical bills for their drug affected special-needs babies. But I wish to God that they don’t stay in abject poverty.

Sadly I'm all too familiar with what's going on I had two children not on any drugs but I'm in recovery 10 plus years and I've been on methadone so my children's were addicted to methadone and they had symptoms as well and after their comfortable in the NICU they do bring them to the next step where you can sleep in the room with them learn about the scoring the everything about it to make them comfortable as possible so it hurts to see a child go through that but they do get through it and then good thing is they won't remember any of it and as far as long-term illnesses with my 7-year-old and now two year old would be my seven-year-old good so I'm learning disabilities and autism but that could be just related to my family so we can't beat ourselves up as long as your baby's healthy and you get healthy for the both of you and clean it'll be okay get plenty of support going to meetings counseling whatever you got to do

5:04 I agree with the doctor completely. I seriously think that instead of condemning, so many female classmates of mine, who were in the same scenario as these ladies, but they were young teenagers. We should try. At least the state of New Jersey should try to help these with ladies, I said this in my last few comments, but the fact that they had to resort to outsourcing their parenthood of such profound special-needs babies born to them in such identical circumstances, with the only difference being that they were young mothers. The stigma they face the object, poverty, they face they do not deserve it. And had society not have such a negative stigma attached to drug usage. I honestly feel like so many of my fellow high school graduating batch mates wouldn’t have this nasty disease.
