I've had a kid with ODD in one of my jobs, and theirs was due to severe abuse. One of the sweetest kids I've ever met, SUPER self aware, and they were working SO hard to grow from their past. The fact that Liam said "if I could find a human friend" broke my heart. He seems like a very sweet, smart child, and he's very well spoken. I hope he finds some wonderful friends soon.

As someone who is in school for special education , this helped give me a brief insight into the world of ODD

@@kerafyrm_lol that’s the limit you put on yourself. Rules are meant to be broken and as you get older you have to learn how to not get caught doing it, we do it everyday. Do you not slow down when you see a cop in traffic in hopes that he doesn’t catch you going 10 over and then immediately speed up when you’ve passed him? Most of us abide by the rules when it’s convenient to keep us out of trouble but would break them if they stood between us and something that really matters, again we see that everyday. Have you every analyzed what rules are and what it means to have rules? Who comes up with the rules? In our case it would be a governing body, what exactly qualifies them above anyone else to determine what can or can’t be done in life? How egotistical do we have to be as humans to sincerely believe we can make rules that tell people how they have to live? When you look at the wonder that is life and existence how on earth do you get convinced that rules that are man made get to govern any of how this works? Following rules simply implies that it is ok to have someone else’s view imposed upon you and that you have to fall in line with that, I don’t need there to be a law to say that I shouldn’t harm someone because I understand that on my own and can govern myself accordingly. Nobody needs a law to tell them they should or shouldn’t do something because we already possess that ability to determine those things naturally, if you are unable to see right from wrong on your own then it’s time for some introspection

Not being totally controled by norms is a good sign, just because a mom has had lots of drugs while pregnant, does not not always mean the kid will be damaged, or cant recover. people, animals and plants can go through a lot and succeed. but only time will tell. i wish him the best

Don't call that woman his "biological mother", all she did was give birth. She's not a mother and will never be. The woman who's in the video and takes care of him however, is his mother.

I am wondering how much of it are drags influence his brain Development and how much is inheritted. There are certain personality traits/brain chemistry that make you easier to get addicted. One of it is ADHD, that we know runs in family.

I call em “Birthers” and “Seeders” and that’s it. They’re not dads, fathers, moms, mothers, or guardians of any type. When you deliberately harm your child, you’re a piece of crap not a parent.

It is sad because he is extremely perceptive, and he's self aware of his condition and emotions. I was not at all as aware of my emotions at this age.

Im not completely sure of what they mean but from my own research and experience that a lot of the time ODD is used by parents to neglect their own place in their child’s behavior and emotional responses. For me it was used as a way to discredit my questioning and concerns about my education or my autistic meltdowns and just being defiant or just me “discrediting authority”. A lot of people with autism and adhd disagree with the diagnosis in general but i think it just needs to be diagnosed less frequently because its obviously a thing that people deal with on a Neurological level but it also agree that its very often sed as a way to silence neurodivergent voices. I hope this gives some insight but please let be know if I’m misunderstanding

Totally relatable! I understand her completely. I have experienced that with my own child. In fact, I was told one time that my child was one of the hardest children her therapist had ever had to work with. Her therapist was supportive and at least fought for us to get the help we needed when my child was a teen. Unfortunately, he kept getting doors slammed in his face, figuratively, too.

It definitively doesn't help that he also has ADHD: Many Symptoms overlap and play into each other.

His brain is very damaged. Sometimes no matter how much therapy or medication or education, it can’t be changed. His brain is not normal, it developed differently and there was s no cure. I sadly understand this boys sense of humor. He uses the horrible things he went through as a joke to help take back the power he felt he lost at a very young age. My mom was never a drug user when she was pregnant, but my father was an addict. I lost him a few years after I was born. I use the trauma and pain I had as jokes to make myself feel better about what happened. One day this boy will find a good group of friends who understands and supports the jokes because they know it’s not it ever be harmful.

Well, if he’d stop thrashing his devices…. But this is what many here don’t understand or can’t seem to acknowledge: ODD has clear neuro-biological roots, which alter the neural pathways and connections. Especially significant are the issues involving certain aspects of the cortex. He acts before he considers the results of his actions-this is beyond his control. The adoptive mother is not “making money” from this neurodivergent young man’s disability. The string of dx’s likely came about due to the school setting attempting to get services (assistance/therapy) for him. In an educational setting, they’re not true medical dx’s, but “eligibility codes”-- of which only less than a handful will offer the student any extra assistance. ODD is very serious; it’s a dx that is given which is usually indicative of extremely serious disorders which cannot be placed on minors. He is not receiving sufficient support nor services. The diligent mother goes so far as to plead for assistance from her State’s Representative-he fails in his duty by refusing to REPRESENT (his job) her child’s lack of educational support by throwing the onus onto the “taxpayers”. This misguided excuse, the over-played, ubiquitous worn-out trope, yet still the most effective and popular in the US, is used like an old fly-swatter…to humiliate those in need. Remember this: Unless you leave this planet young and in an instant, you-too-will someday be in need, unless you’re in the .01%

Awestruck is a term that shouldn't be used lightly. This is a case where it's not even enough.

Liam is absolutely a victim here. However we need to also keep in mind that everybody is impacted by addiction, even the parent of a child. Not excusing his biological mom's behaviour and choices, but the opioid epidemic is a devastating problem all around. Loved listening to Liam, what strength he has.

My heart aches for both of them. I’m sure Liam doesn’t mean to be difficult- he just needs more help, more support and a friend. Just one good friend.

I felt so sorry for her when she said that, it's true, my aunt has a disabled child and she's so alone, she lives in a different country so all we can do is help her financially but it's not fair, I hope to get them legally into the states so she can get much deserved help and my cousin can get the therapy he needs. My heart goes out to all parents who are dealing with this.

@@karinagomez9831 Yes Karina. The child needs THERAPY and Yes, the mom is STRONG but unable to provide that therapy. Allowing Liam to do and say what he wants IS NOT THERAPY. During THERAPY, Liam would be trained adequately and it would not be so as to LET HIM DO AS HE FEELS LIKE. Drugs are destroying the brains of many children, young teens and adults.

I am a member of many community groups (chronic pain/headache disorders/other issues I deal with) because I CANNOT find real life support within my local community. I don't mind having online support/friends and in fact have formed some close long-lasting (10 years+) friendships. Maybe it's a possibility for Liam? With all the appropriate supervision/safety measures,of course❤️

Liam's mom could also meet other parents on line. There are many of us with children who share at least some of Liam's challenges! It would be good for her to speak with other parents who've found ways to avoid some of the conflict. Sometimes, with some children, just asking a different way can be all that's necessary. Sometimes, to-do lists ('star charts', for example) with lists of tasks that need to be done - in conjunction with some sort of reward (a game together, an offer to talk about Roblox (or another preferred topic) - can be helpful. Sometimes they're not. Sharing both, the useful and the less-so, can be helpful to any parent - especially a parent of an intelligent, opinionated child like Liam (and like my son as well).

A child with normal brain development can improve behavioral issues over time. Liam has a whole different set of challenges, including Autism which does not change over time. He will always be different, I agree he is highly intelligent. He’s very witty too. I hope he continues to get the support he needs and finds a way to thrive in life. I think it’s important not bypass his challenges while holding him in high regard.

Definitely over whelmed and is worried about his future. She feels alone in this. She is trying her best but the village is no were to be found. This is a good example how messed up our society is and why we have so many shootings and homeless. People just look the other way when they are children then when they become adults the village is still no were to be found. There is a lot of good in this world and this woman is one of the good. Adopting this child knowing he would have some special needs. I have a lot of respect for her. Hopefully she can keep him on a straight path. Who knows what would of happened if he ended up in our system that is overwhelmed. I hope she is reminding him how much he is loved every day he needs it desperately because life is a struggle for him. Her love can be his shield from the outside world, his safe zone.

Yes, The mom need to learn Liam that he is not a diagnosis. He is not different. The truth is that the parents and adults say it to hom. And the say all of kind of diagnos. Dont put diagnosis on children. Childen can have autism and adhd. Thats it. What i see in Liam is so clear. He have autism spectrum level 1. He have not adhd.

​@@kathleenschoultz i agree entirely, the way the interviewer approached him with those questions and his mom talking so much about the diagnosis, the kid will believe people will let him down and that he is not going to be good enough. He listened attentively to everything his mom about him and he believes them. I think he is a very smart kid and he is just following the role he was told to play.

By saying he’s no different than any other child, you not only invalidate the intense hardships and heartbreaks the mom experiences every single day, but you deny him from receiving specialized treatments and care a child like him needs in order to thrive. He obviously has a lot more going on than just autism and ADHD; Liam literally has a developmentally malformed brain. Neurotypical people don’t understand that diagnoses can vastly help in understanding how the individual’s mind works and finding the best ways to work with the individual.

Yeah probably someone whos witty might help in therapy (like with the shirt thing she says "I bet you can't get your shirt on in 5 minutes" or "Wear your shoes first" "that doesnt make sense I'll wear my socks first". I dont think he has a motive besides wanting control, and doing that sort of thinking might guide him towards certain behaviors but it is hard to avoid being manipulative/not be manipulative towards him since it feels like the biggest thing that may affect him in the future

Congrats to the mom BUT (!!!) that ODD have a lot to do with her being a single mom and he just didn't see her as an authority figure because she may be afraid of educating him the real way thinking in his past! This should be changed immediately if they want to save this child's future. All of his adulthood depends on that. He doesn't follow orders because he never had been "punished" the right way nor had dealt with the real consequence of his actions. This excessive protection can led to him ending up in an mental institution to save him from prison!

When you adopt alone no one makes you aware how bad it can get. My adopted child spent time in a mental health unit as a direct result of the first family. She had no idea what she was going to get with that 7 week old new born and she looks absolutely exhausted and in need of some tlc.

And to Liams' mom: I was just like your son at his age - seriously, right down to not wearing socks just to spite my parents for telling me to - and my mother handled my oppositional behaviour very similarly to how you handle Liam's. Today I'm a young adult, an honours student in my university of choice who also just got offered a graduate school scholarship, and I love my mother to death and tell her it constantly. I sincerely believe that Liam's future will be just as bright, if not even brighter.

His peers might be afraid of him because of his tantrums, meltdowns and refusing to play by the rules. He might be treating them bad at times and push them away. Just like he does with his mom. Difference is that she can handle it, children his age can't. I don't think it's fair to call his peers ignorant and naive.

@@fml2266 Not all kids accept kids they don't know into their play, regardless of whether or not they live in the same neighborhood. Also, not all neighborhoods are suitable for play outside (I don't know what their neighborhood is like, but a place off a busy street with no sidewalks, for example, isn't the kind of place in which children should be allowed to play outside without adult (or older responsible teen) supervision).

one belief I have is that it's possible to build video games that both interest children of high intelligence (and defiance) or any other social disorder that can help them navigate their emotions into a resolvable space, that eventually encourages them to be apart of reality and life in a way that they can handle. at least this is my dream.

This. I didn't have a brain injury but did/do have severe ADHD. And Art saved me. The world you can create, and the way you can sort through this world all through your creativity really helps. It fosters mindfulness, is a form of meditation, and truly helps with trauma processing. Ad from one special needs Mom to another..Stay strong Momma.. God doesn't give us the children we want but the children we need.

​@@ItsBrit Same! I was also struggling with severe depression (not sure if it was a result of the ADHD or just separate). I had two art classes my senior year of highschool with the same teacher. Those classes were my refuge, and her patience and understanding for me really saved me that year.

Art is about breaking rules, that's a great point. I feel Liam probably likes the sports he's in. Hockey has rules, but it's also exhilarating. And if no one else is around, ice skating doesn't have rules

I feel like you shouldn't tell kids too much about this stuff until they get older and have a higher level of understanding.. otherwise it could limit them

This is all related to the various parts of the brain that control impulse. It’s not his fault that his brain is damaged.

Yeah but he IS different, he has like 7 disorders working at once. I think he is kind of forcing it (with the football helmet randomly for example). But he’s most likely doing that as a result of being isolated & treated as different just for being treated as different for being himself. He’s also rlly young, it’s a common trait for kids his age. At his age I did the same thing

That was my exact thought, then I saw your comment. I think these things could be holding him back. Maybe they should've kept some of this from him until he was older. By telling him he's different, it seems to influence his actions.

It was hard. That odd will lead him to prison system if not corrected. Everyone needs rules.

I am a special Ed teacher for pre k and I think one of my students was born addicted to drugs too. He is almost all there (I think he is diagnosed with “autism” but doesn’t act like a typical autistic students I’ve had) but very defiant. Also isn’t potty trained at 5. The student also lives with grandparents and bio parents aren’t in the picture at all. I think he will be diagnosed with ODD as well, possibly bipolar.

His birth mother’s actions shouldn’t determine his worth. His mom is loving, supportive, and doing her best.

She seems like she wants the best for him and is dealing with perfectly valid emotions around taking care of him- ensuring he has what he needs while still trying to teach him the regulatory tools needed to navigate life and relationships. Its the natural worry and stress any mother would feel for their child coupled with the love & desire to keep him safe. I wish her the best and thank you for your kind comment! We all need a little more love in this world.

Well put... but I would add that EVERYONE deserves to be treated with respect and kindness... with an active-willingness to try and understand those we don't think we can relate to, from a place of love, rather than ego! I understand that this isn't how the world tends to operate very often, but I'm really glad that this thriving kid was placed in a caring home, that tries to help him keep thriving... even though the challenges they face seem quite difficult, a lot of the time!

I know the kid has a lot of issues and as a perent its definitly good to differienciate these issues to bad behavior but i think beeing a little strict might go a long way. I can only admire this woman for beeing able to go through this everyday but when it comes to the emotional manipulation i think its important to enforce rules at these moments even if the kid is disabled. Its the same with people justifying devious actions from autistic people. Strictness goes a long way. You dont need to be as hard on the kid as you would a normal kid but even with all those disorders you can understand if you arendoing something bad. For example when he threw her food away, he knew his mom would get upset about that so he definitly understands when ever he is doing something he is not supposed to do and he keeps doing it because he gets away with it

​@@myguy2656 Do you honestly think she's never tried being strict with him...? Reminds me of when people tell folks with acne to just "wash their face a little more often". Like gee, thanks, never thought of that. The kid literally has a malformed brain and a disorder which causes him to oppose anything she says, her tone of voice isn't gonna change that. It will make him resent her though, because he can't control it.
