Waste oil drip feed made in 5 minutes. After making this drip feed for my waste oil burner I connected it to my waste oil Boiler stove to make hot water. This is a very easy build and necessary for anyone thinging of making a diy waste oil burner. There are other systems for sending the oil to the burner but a drip feed that you can see is easy to monitor and adjust.
Cheers Gerry

A little extra thread tape doesn't qualify as something to rib about. I am Tanya. I live off grid in a school bus conversion. I have been looking into ways to improve my accommodations. 2 minutes if you don’t use all that tape, which you don’t need anyway do to the lack of pressure in this system. In a pressurized system, the use of that much tape wrapped so loosely, would make perfect conditions for leaks. This method is the equivalent to pushing up a shirt sleeve with your hand. None of that tape will make it into the fitting. By luck it may create a gasket as you over tighten it. Two full wraps applied while stretching the tape as you go, allowing the tape to seat in the valley of the threads.

I found surface tension is the enemy with this valve system. I drilled a hole in a rubber stopper, pushed it down in the pipe above the T(with the tapered end down), and now the oil does not cling to the sides and run down so I cannot see it drip. Needed the rubber stopper above the sight T to see it drip. The rubber stopper acts like a funnel making sure the oil drips down the middle of the T so it can be seen.

Hi Gerry, excellent videos, but you really don't need that much of Teflon tape. I'm retired now, but worked for a very big steel company in Canada. The company had training there lots of it, they had the company from Swage Lock there, and they mentioned you never need any more than 1 to 2 wraps of the Teflon tape at the most. ( Personally I prefer myself maybe 3 or 4 wraps thou). Just thought I would mention this bit of info. Excellent videos thou, thanks

The problem with a drip system I am having is I want it to burn three hours so I have around a 3 gallon tank. I start it up works great but then about half way through I have to open the valve more because the less pressure from lack of oil makes the stream smaller then at the very end I have to open it up again, in fact I have to open it about every 20 min to keep the same flame going. Trying to figure out a way so I can fill up the 3 hour tank and not have to mess with the valve

This is the Home Depot version: 20mm is about 3/4". So I would eliminate the bushings and use a 1/2" inch, galvanized or black iron, 4-way cross fitting connector because the openings are large enough to be used as a view hole; a 1/2" NPT X 1/2" male compression fitting; 1//2" gate valve with female threads (which is all that they sell here in the U.S.) with two 1/2" close nipples to install on each end of the valve; a 2 1/2" length of 1/2" copper tubing; two sets of 1/2" compression nuts with ferrules. Eliminate the 2 1/2 miles of teflon tape because pipe threads jam together to create the seal. Teflon tape is a lubricant that prevents the threads from corroding together which makes disassembly years or decades later easier.

Hi, Gerry, as others have said, pipes without pressure don't need Teflon tape (or pipe dope, or anything else). Additionally, no more than 2 wraps (1 is almost always enough, but most everyone is nervous).

Hi Sean. The top bushing does not require thread tape but the oil will be collected by the bottom threaded fitting and would weep oil. This includes the 1/2 inch brass fitting threaded into the bushing too. Tapered thread fittings do well on less tape but the brass fitting is paralell threaded so I go a little nuts lol. I hope to get the day tomorrow in the shed and I want to get the boiler stove up and running.

It broke the latch and warped the door! That fireball was pretty frightening!! Here's my question- what causes this? It wasn't windy last night,my chimney is clean...maybr too much oil?y burner pot was glowing red.hasnt done that before)also,what causes sooty buildup on the burner? It's fluffy ash...any help.would be greatly appreciated!

@GerrysDiy
@GerrysDiy 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kas m. The more surface area your stove has the more of it's internal heat you can extract to your space. Most typical domestic multifuel stoves are abut 70 to 80 precent efficient. If your flue is single walled and long inside the buildling you can recover some more heat that way. I had my stove running red hot and I could put my hand on the flue above the roof outside. That's not bad at all. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry
@Jkirk3279
@Jkirk3279 5 жыл бұрын
The design I’m working on uses a “smoke bell”. It can be as simple as one of those two barrel stoves where the top one only holds hot smoke. That gives the smoke time to give off heat, and lets some of the particulates condense into creosote. Better to trap it where you can clean it up than let it form in your chimney.

Hey Gerry I have almost completed a waste oil burner and drip system using veggie oil. The issue I am having is that the copper oil drip pipe that hangs over the flame is heating up. After about an hour the copper drip pipe gets so hot that it starts dripping fire. What are your ideas for insulating the pipe so this doesn’t happen? Cheers Cawdor

You really don't need the tape it isn't under pressure ....the only one that might need tape on is the supply side of the cutoffs valve

Hello Jerry John from New Zealand. I have made and Oz RIT waste oil burner heater it works well. I would like to put it in my shed 12 m by 20 m and I collect rainwater off my roof. I wonder if you or any of your subscribers have had any issues with soot particles on their roof the roof is 5 degrees and I will probably put the flew up to 2 m Beyond the roof cheers for any comments

Hi John. This burner will run smokeless if the flue is 125mm or bigger and the length is 4m or more. But even if you were burning wood there would be particulates. Burning waste oil is like burning coal in that even if you get it to burn smokeless the gases and particulates are not harmless and I would imagine dangerous to ingest. The gases would swirl and contact the roof at least sometimes so I would be careful. It would depend on what you do with the water. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry👍

I almost couldn't watch all the way through. You really are wasting PTFE tape. 2 wraps, and only on a pressurized system.

@Daver G I was thinking the same... good way to help keep the dissimilar metals apart and tape is so cheap, who cares... pick up another can on the highway and sell it for scrap.

I know its old but my OCD has gone off the deep end watching this. you only need 3 maybe 4 turns of ptfe tape on a fitting. anymore is a massive waste.

It's a 5 minute job. 4 minutes of that is winding thread tape onto fittings. I always wanted to learn how to wrap thread tape. Now how about a video on how to build the drip system? Did you mean to title this winding thread tape?

Hey guys,dont hassle him,it's prob. The way he was shown, my mom used to smoke cigarettes in front of me,and, I loved my mother alot!well you know how it goes..Im..still smokin. Unless this guy's doing excessive tape use for another reason, and I'm pretty sure he didn't know my mom....

Way too much teflon tape ! 2 complete wraps is all you need ! REALLY ! would have been nice to see more of what your building ! .... the problem with a gate valve is that when turned down it will force the oil to run down the side and not drip where you can see it..... a needle valve would be much better ! . Bob.....

Hell no, the amount of tape he used is beyond overkill.
@Tailss1
@Tailss1 5 жыл бұрын
@@rigidironworks9834: Don't be to hasty to criticize the amount of tape he used as I built a waste oil heater myself (inspired in part by this guy) and oil leaks in the supply line connections were a problem until I used RTV silicone on the threads. Connections that will hold water no problem will still leak small amounts of oil if they are not absolutely perfect. Used motor oil isn't something you want leaking as it is one hell of a mess to clean up, even in small amounts.
