This chicken feeder doesn't allow chickens to waste food. You can leave it outside because it is rainproof, and mice can't get into it. This was a huge success! It's been really nice to not have to worry about the food on a daily basics. Makings chicken keeping even easier!

It’s been about a month since I started using this feeder and I wanted to give an update. This has been such a great addition to the chicken coop! We haven’t had any issues with leakage, little critters or food waste! So I absolutely recommend and will be doing a similar version for their water so stay tune for that!

After making this video, I realized I put the washer on the inside when it should be on the outside of the bucket between the feeding insert and the bucket. I switch this around and it’s a very very tight fit and I’ve had absolutely no issue with leaking!

I was actually just going to post a comment that I thought you put the washers on wrong, when I saw you had posted this update. Yeah it makes more sense that the washer would be on the outside to prevent water from seeping into the bucket. Good catch.

Been using a version of these for years. Back then there wasn't a kit and we were using pvc plumbing parts. Still not a huge fan of the one size fits all chickens. Personally I have to have a feeder with a 4 inch opening for my rooster because he will not stick his head in the smaller opening with his huge comb. The 3 inch works fine for my hens. I've since adapted these to make quail feeders also.

Edit: I see you made a comment about this already.... I would recommend the gasket on the outside of the bucket to create a seal on the outside to keep water out

if you run drill in reverse after drill bit hole into bucket you will create the hole without risk of splitting the bucket.

If you drill in reverse it leaves a cleaner hole and less grabbing...

Start out in clockwise and then finish in reverse. .you are correct, it makes a difference..

Depending on the size of your coop, I made a feeder from a barrel, put 4 in it, with thoughts of possibly putting a partition in the middle, as I feed layer pellets, as well as grain scratch. I get the torn bags at tractor supply, they give a 15-20% off depends who it at til. We have 12 chickens, mostly for big patrol eggs are for neighbors, friends, and the few we use,

the size of your feed bin definitely depends on how many chickens you have. I currently only have three so this size works awesome and last for quite a bit but if I had a larger number to feed, I would use a Rubbermaid trashcan with a lid with the same inserts. I love your tip on saving on food by buying ripped bags. Thank you so much for sharing that info!

You can get food grade 5 gallon buckets from Walmart bakery, and they usually sell them for a dollar each. It’s what all their icing comes in you just have to ask for them :-)

Do you have a rooster? With the opening being rather small, I wonder if a rooster with a medium to large comb would have difficulty feeding without damaging it.

Great question! I wondered if the openings would hinder them feeling comfortable in there as well. I made another one for a friend of mine who does have roosters, and they have had no issues at all with these inserts.

Just an FYI.. I do not currently have chickens, I have raised them in the past but as of now, this comment is coming strictly from videos that I have seen on KZfaq. I have seen several videos of people complaining that the "Producers Pride" feed is not good. The videos claim that when they switched to other feeds, their egg production increase by quite a bit. So you might want to do some research and think about switching feeds for a few months and see if your egg production changes. I appreciate you looking out for me! I did switch my feed about a month and a half ago to a local Feedmill and my one chicken who hadn’t laid an egg in over eight months started laying eggs again!

I did mine exactly like this and have been using them for a couple years now. I like having a side with no hole. This enables u to set it against a wall or hang from a fence. My chickens, free range with supplemental feeders I turn the backside of the fear with no hole towards the direction the storms come from.

Thank you so much, Sandra! I wouldn’t recommend this feeder with fermented food because you’ll end up with a lot of waste because the fermented food can’t move down like dry food can. But I would love to hear more about fermenting your food. I’ve been hearing a lot about the health benefits!

This wouldn’t work for turkeys. It’s too small. You could check on Amazon they might make one for turkeys. I know people have used PVC piping as well to customize one.

That producers prude food. Is no good anymore. It changed. You will get little to no egg production with it. Go to a local co-op and get feed. Or make your own.
