For a father who has a son that suffers from a rare genetic disorder in the brain which causes bouts of debilitating epilepsy, this type of thing gives me hope and maybe soon bring some treatment to allow him to regain some function and movement back for my son and possibly help aid controlling his seizures WITHOUT medication. This will help tremendously for all other people in similar situations like ours, and aid in a loved one or themselves, and open the door to many more applications. I cry with tears of hope and joy. Keep up the good work Elon, and the team at Nerualink, we need this all!

U can probably get on their website and apply to be part of the trial, if u really are interested. I've been watching the results of the patient from the first human trial & it's amazing stuff. I too am a veteran, Vietnam, and there's already a solution for most of these disorders. Stop doing war. No matter what they tell us there is no justification for it. The vast majority of people everywhere are fine, decent human beings who would rather get on with each other. However there are a handful of people, also everywhere, who make a vast amount of money out of us not getting on with each other. You rarely find them putting themselves in harm's way, that's left to us. There's evidence that over 90% of humans have what amounts to a genetic aversion to killing other humans. We can be taught to, something that's become very refined over recent decades, but doing such things against our genetic inclinations will inevitably cause trauma and we're clearly seeing the evidence of this amongst our veterans. War is not good for people and other living things.

Just curious how you plan on overcoming the taboo thought of implanting something directing neurons to fire? In the case of paraplegics, what type of sensors are going to be implemented after the break in the spinal column. Also how do you protect the device from EMP charges from lightning strikes or anything that has the potential to create a EMP bounce situation? It seems that some sort of shielding might be required but then how do you transmit the signal to the muscle actuators wireless?

I love the two-photon microscopy of the electrodes firing. Try and record or in this case watch the neurons firing during various motor and sensory activities. Try and mimic that exact response using a series of individually placed electrodes. Get good at doing this with precise accuracy. Your design will be better for it when you go to a human trial. It is much harder to guess the activity and response of so many neurons from spike data. You have almost the entire story with the microscopy. Yes, you have way to insert the leads without causing much damage. However, I imagine you only get one shot at placing them in arbitrary locations. This way the architecture of electrode placement will have a better chance of natural responses. By architecture I mean the spacing and depth of the electrodes to allow the desired response as often as possible within the allowable min and max current delivered. An empirical data set would be naturally verified so seems like a great option if the stimulated response is repeatable while changing one variable at a time. Otherwise, testing can be used to verify and multivariable optimization can be used to predict a given electrodes spacing chance of getting precise responses. Why should you take my suggestion? In the future, we can only send messages back over select internet servers...

I don't know if you can answer this but as per my understanding a normal human brain has something along the lines of 100 billion neurons. They said they have a thousand channels so they can maybe stimulate 100,000 neurons which is way lower than our maximum capacity. Plus it seems like it's triggering multiple neurons using one electrode which means the accuracy is just not there since we want control over a single neuron ideally. Plus the electrical signals of neurons are analog afaik, not digital, and those electrodes are emitting digital signals afaik. All this would mean that apart from some sensory stimulus, we won't be able to control say the fingers of a hand or have finer motions we are familiar with like twisting a screw, let alone restoring eyesight and downloading and uploading memories and what not. I am optimistic but more than anything I am a realist. All this doesn't make sense to me.
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 3 жыл бұрын
@@SahilP2648 Thanks for the question. Your comment highlights many problems with today's methods. Interestingly one neuron can control up to one degree of freedom. So recording single-cell spike data with around 200 channels can get decent motor control of a robotic arm and hand. A sensory stimulus can be given to an area but not with a natural feeling using "current" methods. Uploading and downloading memories has not been worked on much. I have an understanding of how to do it but would be too long to explain fully. Basically, though BCI has limitations due to channel count. The desired circuit needs to be imaged with nanoscale resolution. The circuit then needs to be replicated. And yes the function would be similar to analog and few scientists are modeling it that way.

I wonder how much corollary abstraction of 'spikes' might be achieved through off-platform modeling. I suppose it would depend on the sensor array config and the models ability to match the brain. There's a lot of real estate to cover and a lot of potential applications. Early success might be dependent on limiting the scope, having a proper density of arrays, and focusing on your model so you can differentiate all your states. I imagine early devices will also be read heavy, taking a light handed approach to brain input.

I mean its about decoding impulses, as you could see there are people at Neuralink who does exactly that, so I think everything is technically possible, maybe those impulses are drastically different in terms of power or something like that when you think of something and actually wanting to do it and even if they are not and its impossible to differentiate, why can't you just do it like you do with Siri or any other voice assistant (they are not doing everything they hear, they are waiting when you say them to do it)? so you wait for keyword command, then you listen for words, then you can use those words to interpret commands and execute them
