Lizz Wright stuns with a somber version of "Strange Fruit," made famous by Billie Holiday, during the 2019 NPR Music Turning the Tables opening concert at Lincoln Center.
This performance was recorded at the Damrosch Park Bandshell at the Lincoln Center Out Of Doors Festival on July 31st, 2019.

I love that while Ms Wright sticks to her own unique style she somehow manages to capture the essence of pathos that Billie Holiday channelled in her own rendition of the song. Simply Haunting.

For a white man to have written such a dark & beautiful meaningful song back then; and these extraordinary women to tell the sad, afflicted pain behind it, simply blows me away.

What's really interesting is that much of Black Arts involved instances of collaboration between blacks and whites. The artwork that we most associate with the Harlem Renaissance--artwork that appeared in Alain Locke's important anthology 'The New Negro'--was created by a white man of German origins. Carl Van Vechten.
