Love the Staking Set, the incredible precision, the process and your skill! Shellac is amazing stuff. I've used a thick gel-like shellac to cement jewels (Victorian bloodstone intaglios) into one of my signet rings--these bloodstones are obviously enormous compared to a watch roller jewel--I put aside the ring for at least 6-months after the job, to ensure the stone is securely set and the shellac completely cured. I also use a thin, runny shellac to cement fountain pen ink sacs onto the pen's section--a versatile, reversible adhesive is shellac!

When reinstalling a roller table on a balance which has already been poised, I believe it's very important to position the impulse jewel where it originally was. Otherwise, the balance will likely be out of poise because the center of gravity of the table/impulse jewel assembly does not lie on the rotation axis.

What a great video, many thanks for this. So many other channels gloss over this part and don't film it, yet I think it's the most interesting bit. I'd also like to see, rebushing, refitting palat fork jewels, restaffing, burnishing pivots, fitting new pivot jewels, that kind of thing.

My question is how do you line the jewel and center it between the forks. My understanding is that when the balance is at rest the jewel must be centered in the forks without touching either fork when the fork is exactly perpendicular to the balance staff.

Usually, the roller table will be either round or 1/2 round. The diameter of the hole in the roller table as well as the spacing of the pallet fork prongs indicate the size of the roller jewel. They need to match perfectly with just a very small amount of play in the fork. The roller jewel will seat perpendicular to the roller table.

Some terminology housekeeping...Pinions are strong gears, sometimes elongated, which attach to staffs or shafts. The teeth of pinions mesh with the teeth of other gears of wheels...ie. the center wheel gear is driven by the pinion on the third wheel. The pinion on the third wheel drives the teeth of the 4th wheel. The shaft, or staff in the case of watches, has pointed ends called pivots. Pivots go into the jewel holes which are bearing surfaces. So in this operation, you are removing the roller table from the balance staff.

To add to Donny's list: Heat moves through conduction, convection and radiation. The heat is *conducted* through the table warmer.

Wait, isnt dried shellac blocking proper reinstallation of roller table?

From what I can tell, it bottoms out on the staff (or wheel) before the "table" part of the table touches anything. Otherwise, it would sit in the wrong position.
