Should we watch the ball when executing a stroke? It is of the utmost importance to watch the ball when playing tennis, but can we see the ball touch our strings when performing a stroke? Is it necessary to keep our head on the ball well after it has left the strings like the great Roger Federer? In this video, you will find answers to these questions and more...

Federer and a multitude of other pros they have head still down like trying to look through their strings at the contact point . Yes I know its too fast to actually visualize but this approach may help keep the hitting shoulder lower than the opposite which is essential exception being on high shoulder height or higher balls and can help in correcting flying open too early and arming the ball and it also can help promote a proper follow thru so I AGREE 100% that the racquet face angle is key but pulling your head up too early to see your shot can affect the racquet face angle through the hitting zone and helps some players correct this. So yes TRY TO WATCH THE BALL even though this is an over simplification of a multitude of problems truly if there was no need to watch the ball then TRY TO HIT A FOREHAND BLINDFOLDED........ without actually knowing its pace and depth.......Torban Ulrich father of Lars Ulrich of Metallica was a old time Danish touring pro who once was called the "mad Dane" cause he would try to practice his service toss blind folded.......this actually makes some sense...albeit the title of your video is purposely mis leading ... keep up the good work however

For me the watching of the ball is more about an initial tracking of the ball path, a sharp focus on it after the bounce and keeping my head still at contact, i.e. delaying to look up. This has improved my ability to produce clean strikes.

I watched Djokivic and Nadal. At moment of contact, their heads didn't move, whether you look away, close eyes or open eyes, and that's the important thing, not so much looking at the ball, and this goes for volley, overhead too. The problem of shanking is as you swing, you move your head to see where the ball is going on the other side.

Really great video. Thought that trying to 'see' the point of contact was crucial. Now realise that tracking the ball (from the opponents racket) is more important, to give yourself the most time to hit a cleaner shot. Many thanks.

Honestly I thought this was not a “style” but rather dictated by eye dominance? Roger is left eye dominant, the other 3 are right eye dominant. So of course the latter do not need to turn the head quite as much on a forehand to see the racket and ball at impact. Roger instead has to turn his head much more for his left eye to see them on a forehand.

It is natural to look up, just before impact, to see where the ball has gone or where you opponent is. If you play tennis, squash, badminton, golf it may suit you to focus more at impact (using Federer as an example) to get a consistent cleaner hit. Alternatively use a 115-120 sq inch racket. You do not actually need to look at your target. Once this is mastered you can get the 'feel of the ball' on your strings and take it to the next level. If you are not sure if you watch the ball at impact, try hitting a few overhead backhand volleys

I've read, Nick, that the reason we can't see the racquet strike the ball is that, from about 4 feet away, our eyes can not change focus quickly enough to keep a clear image of the ball from that distance as it approaches the racquet head. We don't have the same problem when the ball is much farther away from us as the amount of refocusing necessary is less and is within the eye's ability to manage.

Whilst I understand your point, it doesn't take into account the need for the head to remain stable on FHs that are executed with a tilted torso (spine angle), which are most low and mid height balls. On this type of shot, the optimal movement is rotating the torso around the tilted spine through contact, and then rise up to a neutral/horizontal spine position after contact, similar to a golf shot. And just as in golf, a lot of tennis players either stand straight up from the get go (never getting into the tilted position), or they get into position, but their eagerness to see the result, makes them rise up to early, which robs the shot from power, and makes it much more difficult to hit the ball in the sweet zone (as there is unnecessary sideways body movement).

@panierbio
@panierbio 4 ай бұрын
First of all, be aware of your dominant eye will help you a lot. There is a stroke where you can naturally feel that very sweet spot by turning your head at contact. For instance, for a right hander-left eye, it should be on your forehand where you 'll see the ball very well turning your head , this is almost an obligation cause if you stay facing the net while hitting, , you will see nothing ! On your back hand this is much easier to stand facing the net cause your contact point is naturally in front and your dominant eye the same side of the stroke. That allows you to see what's happening at contact. Try this first and then you can think about Roger or Medvedev who are turning both side. A very special ability which is not for every one. I've got my opinion on this ability , for me it is all about the present moment. Playing tennis , or leaving a good life, is all about mindfulness, be aware of what's happening when it's happening and stay with it, with both eyes , even it is a very short time like hitting a ball. That is a huge secret for happiness or consistency in the tennis game :)

Domenico, Thanks Yes absolutely on the overhead. Too fast for us to see the contact plus we don’t ever think about keeping our head up there to try to see the ball, because it would inhibit our downward movement of the body. However, the volley is an exception. With absolutely no rotation in the stroke we should keep our head in the contact zone to add further stability in the shot. We also might be able to see the ball touch the strings in some instances such as the drop volley.

I think there are two stages: first stage you are watching the ball being stoke by the opposite side, watch the speed ball flies with and predict where it will make the first bounce. As soon as you almost ready to strike it you watch the position of the partner on the court to direct the ball away , to make it unapproachable , and, calculate the strength you going to hit the ball back.

All the top pros watch the ball at the contact point 90% of the time. Some like Fed and Nadal keep their heads down longer than others, and that's why they are the 2 best players that ever lived. Unfortunately I have developed a very bad habit of looking away before I make contact and I'm really working hard on correcting this. Wish me luck.

When looking at Federer forehand, the right shoulder is lower than the left. The head is lowered and "looks" at the ball to maintain balance when hitting. Try with the head raised does not work, you have no balance.

Other coaches, online, are stating that if you turn your head during the shot it makes you unconsciously turn your shoulder too early causing you to lose balance. I will give it a try and see how it goes based on your teach. So far I am used to watch obsessively where the ball goes after the contact. In the last minutes of your video, where you copy Djokovic, you keep your eyes on the ball until contact. In the video from Djokovic he seems like is not even watching the ball at contact?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
Dan, you are right about Djokovic and my FH. The point is that we don’t see the ball touch the strings. Therefore, whether we look at the contact or not, doesn’t matter. Furthermore, keeping the head down after contact might be counterintuitive for some players. My advice is to track the ball perfectly and not worry about the seeing the contact.
@aliascom6484
@aliascom6484 3 жыл бұрын
For me the point of eye contact on the point of impact is mainly due to the dominant left or right eye so Federer has the focal point on the impact because his dominant eye and the right instead Djokovic has the left so the field of view is completely different when the ball approaches our zone of play... Do you agree ?
@SchittsFrozn
@SchittsFrozn 3 жыл бұрын
This is exactly right. The video is misleading because it tells people that they can choose which way to hit the ball but that's incorrect. People that are cross-eye dominant (right-handed but left eye dominant) should look at the point of contact, while people that are pure eye dominant need to turn their head more towards the court (look ahead of the ball) because their dominant eye is on the same side of the body as the racket.

Nice video, just a little something to add. Roger is left eye dominant. Whereas Andy is right eye dominant. This plays a major role in head position at contact and this show with head placement. Agreed Roger exaggerates this but if you analyse most players forehand and backhand head positions there will be a difference in head position relative to contact point.
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
David, thank you for the comment. Just wanted to clarify that there is a difference in head position at contact because of rotation. As explained in the video there is less rotation on the backhand, especially the one-hander. Therefore, the head will stay down in the contact zone.
@pizzabio097
@pizzabio097 5 жыл бұрын
Every picture of FH other than Fed their eyes are forward more due to right eye dominance rather than rotation. To say rotation is direct correlation with head position I believe is incorrect. But we are all open to our own thoughts on body movements mechanics. Have you got any scientific literature to back up your claim?
@IntuitiveTennis
@IntuitiveTennis 5 жыл бұрын
David, another clarification. We do not see the ball touch the strings on the forehand, backhand or the serve. Which eye is dominant is therefore irrelevant. In addition to that we can hit the ball with our eyes closed and hit the ball perfectly every time. I have performed this experiment with 100’s of students on the court and it works every time. The difference in head position at contact has to do with how much rotation a stroke has. i.e. Djokovic head down on backhand, head forward on forehand.
@pizzabio097
@pizzabio097 5 жыл бұрын
Much of your technical chat is focused on rotation at head position and highlight player differing head position relative to forehand and backhand, therefore I would say my point is extremely pertinent in what you discuss in the video. Andy hit late on his backhand whereas Novak hit more in front. It’s eye dominance. Most of your focus is on head position and body position. You need to always ask for the why......scientific facts are important when delivering content and as a coach who has studied eye dominance and games styles and body position at contact I beg to differ on your analysis.

The point of the video: The contact with the ball last milliseconds and players do not “see” the ball on the strings. Some even have their eyes closed. Keeping the head down and “trying to see the ball” is therefore unnecessary.
@kentwood2914
@kentwood2914 Жыл бұрын
I would NEVER use any forehand technique example from Djokovic as a principle or something to imulate. You did not hit one forehand with the face forehand like Djokovic. It has NOTHING to do with the head being DOWN....it's all about how Federer keeps his head STILL...something all teaching and coaching pros do not comprehend. Federer's forehand is so superior to Andy and Djokovic that they should not be talked about in the same description. Seeing balls on the strings is just a figure of speech...again, it's about keeping the head and supporting body frame still at contact for a pure clean kinetic hit like Federer. Nadal, Djokovic, and Andy CANNOT hit anything nearly as balanced and pure and clean as Federer. They just can't...Look at their feet...they are always off balance and fighting inertia of their swing. Federer is always balanced. That's a major part of his genius that sets him so apart from the others.
