It's rare you'll ever be in a plane with a more experienced pilot at the controls. They don't let just anyone fly Air Force One. Anyway, definitely an impressive landing. I would love to see AIr Force One come in for a landing in real life someday. I've seen it take off once. Did not expect it, had no idea the President (George W. Bush) was in town but sure enough I looked out the windows at SEA-TAC one day waiting for my own plane home after a vacation and saw Air Force One taxiing to a runway. Watched it take off, and boy is it an impressive sight. Read online later that he was in Seattle for something or other. My own flight got canceled, had to get a different flight out, didn't get home for another 24 hours, but I was glad to at least see Air Force One with my own eyes.

Back in the mid-80’s, I attended an air show at Offutt AFB just south of Omaha. There was an AF1, though not official as the president wasn’t on board. It was a new plane that hadn’t yet been placed in presidential service though it had all of the markings. The plane landed on the runway, using only half of it, coming to a complete stop. Then, after the stop the plane continued in the same direction taking off using the remaining half of the runway. Then, it circled around and landed just as it had the first time. After this second landing, the plane turned 90° on the runway facing the spectators. And then it bowed to us. I’m assuming that it could do that because the front of the plane could be raised or lowered a bit to meet up with passenger stairs and jetways of various heights. Anyway, the plane having the ability to land and take off using only half the runway was impressive, so having it bow was icing on the cake.

Would be interesting to watch either way!
@Deni-md8xq3 жыл бұрын
@@janetstory594 No that was a Stop and Go. A touch and go is just that...no stopping. You just continue on your roll out after reconfiguring your plane for takeoff settings, add throttle, and go. Keeping the nose up helps to smoothly slow the aircraft. You'll see pilots in fighters do it all the time. They don't generally have thrust reversers. It would be a fair guess that the pilot in this is an ex F-15 or 16 pilot and the habit has either stayed or he's adapted it to make his landings even more smooth. I've never known a military pilot who liked to brag about using up the entire runway, though. I'm not convinced this saves wear and tear (which doesn't come out of the pilot's pay anyway, so I'm not sure they'd care). It's just transferring wear from the nosegear to the mains. Most of the slowing down is being done by the thrust reversers anyway -- which fighter jets don't even have. You can see the thrust reversers deploy shortly after the aircraft moves to the left of the photographer.

People who are not impressed with the feather-touch landing executed by the skilled flight crew of Air Force One are either (A) completely void of appreciation regarding skilled aviation, or (B) they don't have the maturity to think beyond their political bigotry. I have observed the crew of Air Force One practice multiple "touch and go" landings at Joint Base Andrews. It was impressive to observe an aircraft of this size and mass being controlled in such a precise manner. By the way, I observed this practice session when Barack Obama was president. Not for one second did I allow my political feelings about President Obama to discount the skills and dedication of the Air Force One flight crew. It's called respect. I strongly suggest the naysayers of this video give it a try -- it may reduce some of the hate you carry unnecessarily in your heart.
