You guys are bringing this thing along! You really make repairing this old stuff seem doable, even if its from a crawl space covered in 30 years of neglect. This channel is a valuable place to learn about repairing pinball.

I'm convinced that engineers of the day putting Alkaline batteries directly mounted to the CPU's was the very first example of engineered obsolescence. lol
@ThomasWood3DPrinting
@ThomasWood3DPrinting Жыл бұрын
I think its more of lack of foresight. Old overengineered batteries didn't leak, so maybe that was the assumption with alkaline batteries? You also see this issue in old computers as well, the batteries would leak and potentially destroy the motherboard.
@fred_derf
@fred_derf Жыл бұрын
It's not planned obsolescence, it's a maintenance failure. You are supposed to replace the battery every couple of years. The problem is people left the batteries in them when they put them into storage for decades.
@3rdaxis649
@3rdaxis649 Жыл бұрын
@@ThomasWood3DPrinting Agreed. This isn't some home appliance this is a routed coin-op machine that is designed to last and these electronic engineers MUST have known this would be a ticking time bomb. Gross negligence.

They don't add mercury to batteries any longer so they are much more likely to leak these days.

I always turn the high voltage pot down until the displays just begin to flicker or drop out then turn it back up 5 volts. Most of the time I end up between 175 and 180 volts. It does make them run a little cooler which does help them last longer before they burn.

Hear a tip: If you are getting water in your headlight and its blowing the fuse, you can fix this by filling the headlight up with headlight fluid. The headlight fluid must be this stuff, dielectric, meaning that it will not conduct electricity and cause problems.

Ron and Joe what are the typical life span of the capacitors in the pinball game or video arcade game? Like when they were bought brand new. 15-25 years? I was just wondering because I remember like on the regular home computer I believe from one manufacturer that made like the motherboard. Similar to like the mpu and similar boards that uses capacitors in pinball only smaller. Were of low or poor quality one.
