It's probably irrational thinking, but I feel helpless in a bivy bag...like packaged jerky for bears or like I'm conveniently already in the body bag to help out the maniac in the forest. I feel as though there's no space to defend myself. Lol

They're great if you have high winds that would blow over a tent.

I've had great luck pitching a tarp with elastic cords flat and crawling up under it in bad wind. I place the corner of a square tarp into the wind then stake the two adjacent sides to the ground. I stake the back sides and corner with the elastic. That way the wind can't pick up the leading edges and billow up the tarp. There's as much space as you make for yourself under there. I can sit up or kneel and the tarp stretches on the elastic to make that happen.

I have the OR Alpine Bivy, I really avoid using it, for high alpine use, I have my Direkt 2 tent, it is the same size at the bivy, lower down where you are showing this.. I'd rather use a hammock, under quilt and tarp. Bivies are a pain in the ass to get into without bringing dirt into your bag and it is just overall not a very enjoyable time sleeping. I have seen those who use them, but, I will do everything I can not to use mine.

I’ve got a British army goretex bivvy - weighs 10% more than my expensive tent, closes with Velcro some of which my mum sewed on for me, a bit ratty. Wouldn’t change it for the world. Dry and comfy all night long, slept in snow trenches in Scotland in Feb like a fat pissed baby. Wake up, coffee on, smoke a pipe, on we go. Love it. Bivvies rule in Scottish midge season man. Get up high on a ridge so you’ve always got a breeze, roll it out in any cosy crevice. E: paid £30 for it about 10 years ago 🤌 always keep sleep mat inside the Therese I’d slide off, thick enough to protect my rustly crisp packet neo air. Fuck I love my bivvy bag man

My bivi has a bathtub floor which is waterproof and very good top. My tarp is from REI and I’m never as warm as when I’m in my bivi. However, what made me change was the convenience of being in a tent. It the end my tent was equal to the weight of bivi and tarp.
@timbschwartzАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I think there are probably times where a bivy really shines for convenience (the desert comes to mind), but I too prefer to have a tent when rain is an issue vs a bivy. Just makes it easy to change and whatnot.

I’ve been using a bivy specifically a USGI one for all my cold weather camping and they are life savers. Traps in the heat but as mentioned above they will trap moisture. So generally an overnight is fine anything more is kinda risky

I helped my claustrophobia by forcing myself into uncomfortable places and learning to control my mind. I still get that feeling every once in awhile, but now I can easily control it. I mean before my heart would start racing, I couldn't catch my breath and my mind would panic. Now I cram myself into industrial machinery for a living, doing maintenance. Found a new fear though, machines starting up while I'm inside of them. That fear is legit though. My first year I seen a man get his skull crushed by a 5 ton roll of steel right in front of me and there was nothing I could do to stop it. I still have nightmares about it.

@@timbschwartz After persevering with the claustrophobia, I love bivy camping. Its the best!!!!! My hooped bivys instructions say it takes 10mins to set up....only if you have your eyes closed and just use your left hand. It's ready in about 4mins, which is great as you can leave it until its almost dark.....perfect for stealth. I love it, the feel of a gentle breeze across your face , the sounds and smells, etc. You're really part of your environment. And light weight too. Does get damp inside though, ill have to figure a way of drying my sleeping bag during the day...I found anyway.

@timbschwartz7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Once upon a time, tarp + bivy was lighter than a tent, but that's not necessarily the case anymore. I think where the bivy shines is cowboy camping in dry environments, where you don't need overhead shelter, but want to keep the breeze and critters off.

What about bivys that are made of Gor-Tex that breathe? What is a good source to find out more about Gore-Tex bivy's because since they can breathe then I think they would be the ideal.
@timbschwartz6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! Waterproof-breathable fabrics like Gore-Tex are going to be less breathable than water-resistant fabrics like Argon 67. If breathability is you're aim, you'll want to go water-resistant rather than waterproof unless you plan on the bivy being blasted by precipitation, like in winter and there's blowing snow or if it's your primary, standalone shelter (not advised lol.)
@psycomutt6 ай бұрын
Definitely start by researching military biby bags. A lot cheaper but usually heavier. Don't forget that there are lots of militaries, not just your own, and a bunch use gor tex gear.

The primary reason I choose a tent because 🐜, 🐀 & 🦀. The second reason I choose a tent is ⛺️ internal square footage. I’m sure there is a time and a place where a Bivy is enjoyable and possibly the best choice but remember that doesn’t mean I’d be miserable inside my tent. If the argument is speed & weight over comfort I raise you the humble Poncho 👍
