I was mesmerized by the whole process. There's just something about wood and lumber that is soothing. All the potential that exists in a tree from seedling to felling. I live in an older house and when I look at the lumber that was used 150 years ago and still provides my family with warmth and protection I am awestruck.

That's right Fred. It's even more awe inspiring when you realize that almost everything was done by hand too back then! They didn't have these wonderful bandmills back in the day. We're pussies by comparison. But yeah, you just can't have a bad day milling (unless the machine breaks :) You never know what you are going to find inside a log. It seems that the bigger and uglier the log, the more beautiful the lumber inside. You can be in a pissy mood but when you open up that log, the first thing that hits you is the wonderful aroma. Then as the figure is revealed, cut by cut, the angels begin to sing. That's the second thing I have found that ALWAYS takes you out of a funk. The first is looking at the clouds and the sky. Try it sometime when you are in a bad mood. Look up at the majestic clouds. You simply cannot remain irritable. Sometimes it only lasts as long as you watch the clouds but still you simply cannot be negative when gazing at the sky! The constant repetition in association with beauty and creativity is a mesmerizing thing. I love welding too. It takes skill but it is also mindless in that you have to concentrate to the exclusion of everything else and it becomes this hypnotic and deeply satisfying thing.

Good thinking. The mill loads the log on the table, turns and clamps it for the first cut, and the following three squaring cuts. Even raw edges can be cleaned on multiple boards so one can get straight 1x4s. I liked it.

Okay, here goes. Simeon, I think this video may be your best work yet. I was tempted to start typing this only part way in, but instead watched it all, then watched it again. You sir, in my opinion, have a real talent in film making. How you can tell a story with a camera. The inclusion of music, and a great choice it is, was provided at the right time, and ended at the right time, and did not overpower the story sound in the backround. Your choices in shooting and editing the multiple camera angles provided perfect continuity to the storyline. The naration was spot on. A perfect paragraph, as it were. I don't know how you could have done this any better. Your dad seems to feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable apearing in the story of your homestead. Please assure him that I, for one, consider him a welcome addition. All of your family are a positive and appreciated part ot the ongoing, day in the life, documentary you are graciously giving to us. Thank you. I look forward to the next videos in this series, just to see if you can possibly top this. I wish I could give more than one thumbs up.

bandsaw mills always seem to be the best over circular saw in bush work, but in the large sawmills they usually use large diameter blades to get a straighter cut, in the end as long as they do the job.

Thanks for making this video. I genuinely mean that. I'm from the suburbs and my parents stopped camping before I was born so I'm playing catch-up on all the things other people get to experience. This was so satisfying to watch. It must be great fun to go from a properly harvested tree to whatever gets built with it. One day I'll try to do this on a miniature scale and build a circular landscaping wall, leaving all the natural edges and "flaws". 🤞

Love the trees! I love long lumber. I have thirty two foot two by eight ceiling joist in my garage I built in 73 not sure if I could find them or afford them today? I watched a video on the diesel 40 last night. A big plus is your dad don't have to walk with it! If I was younger and lived in an area with good trees I would consider a good mill. The lumber I buy is junk and they want a lot of money for it today. Start up cost for all the equipment would be scary but if timber could be bought at a good price I think a profit after a couple of years might be possible?
