My first set was Second hand Callaway X14 (still in the garage) over 15 years ago. Last Christmas I bought the slazenger V300 set and loved the consistency I got with them. They gave me such a positive feeling about my game I decided to custom fit Taylormade R9. My game is improving and I'd like to think the Slazengers had a huge say in it. Thank you for giving an honest review, I think you nailed it 👌

When getting into golf after a long break (and really being serious about it), I did both of these ways. I bought a 12 piece strata set of clubs for $250 and added 3 second hand clubs (Driver, GW, SW) that cost an additional $32. But I kept watching FB marketplace for deals, and boy did I score. TM SLDR for $60, Mizuno MX25 Irons (4-LW) for $75, SW for 30, Callaway 5 and 7 woods for $32, Bag for $10, and used Odyssey putter for $50. So all told $232 roughly. The box set got me through a month while I put the second together, but the second hand set is the one I use most and will pick up first every time. Box sets are great if you aren't going to practice or play often. But if you're going to take the game serious, there are sooo many second hand options that are even better

Simon, picked up a set 5-pw of Ping G5’s for $20. Heads in great shape, shafts rusted out. Got 5-pw Ping AWT 2.0 new pulls with brand new Align grips for $60. Look and play great, had a great time putting the new shafts in!

Good choice. Great deal. Those old Pings are just as good as some newer sets. I've got a set of Top-Flite titanium irons that still hold up to the new stuff. Also have some Ping i3s. Beauties too.

Only had 2 sets of clubs , both second hand, 1st set x my boss when he traded up and I was starting 30 years ago, just got back into golf this year found a 2nd hand set used only once for half retail price, so as close to new as I can afford , so shop around and watch the 2nd hand markets for a period before diving in and purchasing, bound to find a good / great deal, thanks for content , it’s refreshing to watch, 👍💪🌏

Funny when I started out I bought a package set and used them for about 2 years, then gradually I started buying 2nd hand clubs, first a driver than a putter a set of irons and so on and so on until I had a mix bag of second hand name brand clubs. Now I’m playing more often and lowering my handicap makes me think I’ll invest in new fitted clubs next.

I had a set of Tommy Armours when I first played as a teenager. I have such fond memories of them that I decided to stick with the brand when I got back into golf after almost 20 years. I found a set of 845u online for $50 and went out to an executive course the day I got them The round was brutal but the feel of the clubs in my hands was like shaking hands with an old friend :) Good luck out there with yours.

Sorry in advance for long post, just wanted to share my experience as a beginner. I just started playing a few months ago, didn't know if I was going to get hooked and stay at it or what would happen so I went for bascially the cheapest used set of a known brand that I could get for very much the same reasons you list in this video. You get that little bit of extra quality and tech, and they're bound to keep their value better than something thats new and known to be cheap/low quality. What I got was a set of Spalding executive bi-metal irons and a driver + FW of some brand i didn't recognize, they seemed decent at the price (got them for just under £100 including a bag, some balls etc, everything I needed to get started) and they served me well for a while. However, as I got out there and started playing I got more interested, I started doing my research, I started regretting not doing my research beforehand. I decided to wise up, get some gear that suits me personally rather than just suiting my wallet and I don't regret it. I got a new Driver (Ping G400) and the difference was night and day compared to my old one. Hitting my Driver suddenly became enjoyable, balls started flying where I actually wanted them to. I also got some mizuno Irons and oh my... Even I as a beginner could feel the difference. I could hit some decent strikes with my Spaldings sure enough, but bad hits would punish me badly. Not only regarding ball flight, but feel wise as well. They felt... Hard. Like, a bad strike would physically hurt my hands. My new irons feel smooth as butter in comparison. They don't excuse my bad technique, a bad strike is bad and it will show on ball flight. But at least they feel much more enjoyable, a bad strike no longer hurts my hands and I have a whole new level of emotion towards my clubs compared to before. I like my new clubs, they're not just some cheap shit I got because the price was good. I got them because I did my research and became convinced that these were good clubs, and it does make a difference in how much I enjoy playing. So I definitely recommend doing your research beforehand and get something that fits you, something you'll like and enjoy. Not just something that's cheap and cheerful because they will get boring fast.

Wilson makes a good inexpensive box set. The only let down is the sets don’t come with a sand wedge in the sub $300 price range. Wilson sells a $25 dollar wedge so I guess it’s not so bad.

Great video as always. I'm a new subscriber. I played a bit of golf about 15 years ago and never received a handicap as I wasn't a member but at my course (par 71) I would normally shoot around 85 - 90. I have since moved countries (now in Germany) and was looking at buying a cheap beginner set that I could have shipped within Europe. And to be honest I didn't find many reviews of beginner sets in general, basically only the Wilson set and sets I cannot access here in Europe (at least not affordably). Unless the KZfaq algorithm shows me the same videos. You never have a pro or channel that reviews a number of beginner sets when they surely would have access to them. I think this speaks volumes for the type of people taking up golf. Beginners buying brand names and clubs individually especially drivers. In other sports and hobbies, affordable and beginner equipment is reviewed and discussed in depth. This is definitely NOT what I think of your channel, just my 2 cents. What do you think?

Wilson stretch box set (came with bag and everything to start) £200 - used for 8 months and got me hooked. static fit for ping green dot half inch longer - found a set of G25's 4 -sw £235 - and this backs up totally what you are saying, my good shots with the Wilsons were rearly long and good, the bad ones were terrible, the Pings whilst not giving me much more on good strikes were by a long long way better on bad strikes, I actually couldn't understand at first how some rearly poor strikes still ended up going straight.... needless to say I have probably saved half the price of the clubs in not losing so many balls each round (exaggeration) but it does actually count in cost...… great enjoyable videos, thumbs up !

Interesting video as my better half is trying to get into golf and this was an option I was looking at for her, I ended up buying her a sports direct ladies PW to get her started, £15 you can’t go wrong. Not sure if it would be everyone’s cup of tea, but could you recommend ways or do a video about the best beginners tip and I mean people just starting their golf journey. Rather than me trying to give her tips (not being a golfing pro) and her getting frustrated at me, plus you’re a lot more visual with your descriptions. Keep up the great content.

I don't know what a quid or a pound is but I only paid about $700 for my current set. All Second hand except the putter. I got a Callaway BB Alpha 816 DBD 9° with Rogue Silver 60s $105 BB Alpha 816 4 wood 16° with Rogue Silver 70s $68 Mizuno Combo set mph5 2i-5i, Mp25 6i-pw I believe I paid $360 (it said used but nyself and several other individuals couldn't find a single blemish or nick on any of the irons. They could pass for new.) Cleveland Cg15 50° 54° & 58° wedges in perfect condition for $85/set, and a new Oddesey O-works 7 putter $90. I added a $160 bag but for the first month I was using a big old Ping Staff bag that I got for free. So my total cost was:....well I don't really feel like adding all those numbers right now because I'm relaxing and I don't want to get up to find a calculator, but I promise I'll bring the calculator out tomorrow and add them up and edit the comment.

Great video. I purchased my first $200 package set 12+ years ago to get back into the game. Graphite shaft etc. I purchased a second "matching" set a couple years ago because in addition to playing a lot more, I travel a great distance for work and instead of hauling them across country, my idea was to keep one set at home and other at work. The Driver of the older set broke last year (replaced with a used BigBertha) and I just broke the 5i from the newer set. Since, I couldn't tell you the difference between Ping, TM, and Title my plan is to get fitted for a used name brand set. It's this the best idea? (30 Hdcp, plays year round, variety of courses)

Any thoughts on using the Maltby Playability Factor for researching Game Improvement Irons? I've read that there is a contentious discussion with some as to how reliable it is for higher-end irons (ie blades), but is the data it provides a good guide for rating Game Improvement Irons for an adult beginner. It might be a good topic for a series of videos...does the MPF data correlate well to actual use with a monitor/range/course with new/used irons (blades/MB/GI). As always, a good video on an excellent topic. If the game is to be grown, some clarity is needed for beginners to see through all the marketing/hype from the manufacturers.

Hi Simon. Hope you still read the comments on your old videos. Any chance you could do a series on second hand sets to buy? I'm struggling to choose! I'm relatively new to golf so would need a second hand set suitable for a high handicapper. Throw in a bit of jargon busting (i.e. The types of head shape/cavity/blade etc etc) and I think it would make a good vid. Could then repeat it with different skill groups (maybe wouldn't need so much jargon busting for the low handicappers!) and different types of club. Cheers.

Simon, I haven’t finished the video yet, but one thing you should suggest to newer golfers is to take advantage of a golf store or big pro shop that might be offering free fittings. At least they could get length and lie, maybe flex, plus just take a look at what suits their eye. Then got to eBay or golfbidder etc and look for some bargains that match or come close to that fit.

One con for 2nd hand.. If ur new to the game is there are loads of fakes out there and if ur inexperienced you could easily get conned + I personally know people who have irons that are longer than standard with flat lies or whatever but they sell them on Ebay as "standard" and obviously they aren't standard but if you don't know what the heck ur looking for you could again get something unsuitable. Yes if my clubs were stolen and I couldn't afford to replace them I would buy used rather than a package set but i have 35 years experience of buying clubs. As a complete beginner I would be happy to get a package set and grow from there.

Cheap package set means drivers that break and fairway woods that break and hybrids that break. The companies have to be cheap so they usually cut corners by providing crappy graphite shafts and garbage bags to carry them with. Get yourself a 5 to 10 year old set of irons and spend a few extra bucks. you can keep them 3 or 4 seasons until you get your swing on point.

New golfers should get game improving much like those ping g series, and they do not need to outgrow them for something forged. I have used ping Karsten 2014 set for 8 years and Im + 8 hc. I used my friends blades as my striking got better and it made the game less enjoyable. Not everyone has the same taste and seeks to play mizuno blades.
