What would you recommend to people before getting gerbils? 🐹

I have a question, what food do you recommend?.
@finsandwhiskers Жыл бұрын
@@ISuckToes696 that’s a tricky question, I know it sounds advertise-y but I highly recommend looking through my diet videos, I go into depth on what options there are, as there’s very little when it comes to gerbils.

I'd recommend people to be sure they can afford the vet bills, mine has been quite costly, eye problems, tumor removal, but they're very much worth it.

like with any pet, really get to know what it is like having gerbils, what they are like, what they need, what kind of food is optimal. Like for example, gerbils usually are not lap animals (you can handtame them and some might want to sit on your shoulder etc but they are individuals and that should be respected). And don't use cheap wood shavings. The biggest monthly cost should be their bedding. And having a divider or otherwise being preperad if fighting occurs. Usually it is best to avoid getting three or more siblings as it is more likely to end up in fighting before they turn 1 year old but it all comes down to their personalities so sometimes it might work. Safest bet are pairs and one adult + 6 weeks-old(s) but even they are not 100% quaranteed to succeed.

I would recommend whach a lot of pro and cons videos to really make sure that you could be a good home for them. I feel this is the best thing to do before you even research. I had to do this before I had any potential pet ideas. Gerbils are the best but also don't get gerbils thinking there are no cons. In all seriousness, gerbils are the best, and I love my two gerbil girls❤. Good luck to all potential gerbil parents in your gerbil journey❤❤❤❤

My gerbil story was a long one so,here we go! My gerbil (darthvader)lives alone because when he was with his brother (flash) they started fighting really out of the blue and they were drawing blood and I had school one day so we put them in seperate compartments of the cage.Later that day,we got a new cage and separated them. They were both doing great! Then flash died and Darthvader now lives alone and is much happier

I can appreciate the difficulty of having limited care information for a rodent. I've rescued and kept a certain rare "pet" rodent species (I don't think they should be pets) for two decades. Unfortunately there is so little scientific or otherwise evidence-based information out there to draw on for proper diet in captivity that the internet is fraught with misinformation leading the majority of captive individuals to develop painful and often deadly dental disease. There are people who have gone deep enough into research to develop a healthy diet for this species, but that community that I'm a part of is all but drowned-out by the masses of incorrect information. I don't like to advertise them on the internet because I would hate for someone to hear about them from me and go and buy them, so forgive my crypticity😅

I have a question so I’m getting two gerbils soon and I have a small cage, not terribly small but a little smaller than the recommended one. I was wondering if I let them out daily like in a play pin or so would they be fine?? (Temporary till I get a new cage or tank)❤
@finsandwhiskers10 күн бұрын
Is it possible that you can wait to get them until you have the right enclosure? If not, and it’s temporary, then I think it’d be fine to have them there-I wouldn't recommend taking them out though because they will be new to you, and intimidated. You should at least wait two days before trying to introduce yourself to them! ♥️

I hope it's okay to ask here! I just got 2 gerbils and was wondering how to tame them. I've watched your vid on taming (super helpful!) but one of my boys is super territorial to the point that a hand in their enclosure causes him to sprint over and bite. Any tips?!

Hey I want to start to look into gerbil care, because maybe I want to own them in the near future and I have some questions. Is a terrarium from 120x50x50 big enough? How big does their wheel need to be? Is 32cm big enough? What type of bedding do they need? Do they smell a lot or is it the same as hamsters? How much bedding do they need? How old do they get? And what is the best type of food out there? Thank you so much for your answers 😊
@finsandwhiskers9 ай бұрын
Hello! If you take a look at my gerbil care playlist I explain in full detail some of the answers to your questions. I know it sounds like I am advertising, but it’s really difficult to give short answers to these types of questions as it’s very important to be described in depth. As for the simpler questions, For the scent of gerbils, I don’t have a video on that but they do not have a smell so long as you keep the enclosure clean. 💛 Gerbils live 3-5 years. 32 cm is a great size for their wheel! They need at least 8 inches of bedding as they use tunneling systems even more so than hamsters. You can choose or have a mixture from aspen wood shavings, hay (only as an additive), Kaytee clean & cozy, small pet select, carefresh (non-scented)-to name a few.

Hi! I have two gerbils of my own and one of them is forming a bald spot under his mouth area. I've looked into to why this might be happening but I could not find anything:( I've seen that gerbils get bald spots from possibly digging too much but he has it in and area that's not really prone to that. And I don't see my other gerbil grooming him excessively. Do you have any idea what it might be from?

Does anyone know of a good substitute for hay when it comes to bedding? Hay is good to help hold tunnels together, but as my cat is allergic to hay, I’d love to know of any good alternatives for its role? (The cat obviously isn’t meeting the gerbils, but the hay does get on the floor and he keeps licking it like the weirdo cat that he is and gets bad reactions from it)
