I thought about a 3" lift w/ 33's but fortunately very early on getting into off roading Jeeps, many told me, their TJ became very sluggish going from just 32's to 33's in addition to a domino effect of needing additional expensive parts. And I'm glad I listened! Because I drove a TJ with this set up and it didn't have that low end torque and was very slow off the line. And most of them returned to 32's while some fell for the aftermarket bait, very expensive bait. I get many who want to know what is the perfect build. Which is not easy to answer because everyone does different things with their Jeep. But I would like to share mine since my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn drives and handles absolutely amazing on and off road. Keep in mind, I am NOT a rock crawler, I'm an adventurer who takes the family beach wheelin, beach camping, surf fishing, and we hit fun, moderate trails in the fall and winter getting to our favorite fishing holes and camp sites. Which is why the build is for what's near and for what we do, nothing was put on this TJ unnecessarily for show. I see too many "spotless Jeeps" with 33's - 37's. As long as you have good off road instincts and common sense, a modest, high quality build will allow you and your family to have a lot of fun! All in, I'm at $25k with my '05 TJ Rocky Mtn. And I can honestly say build wise, I'm done!! I might Raptor line it since the TJ has a few rough paint spots and won't ever have to worry about off road pinstriping again. The best part is, this TJ not only keeps up, but outperforms a lot of these $40k - $75k JK's & JL' s. Due in part to people's inexperience and just "over building". The '05 TJ has a modest build, yet is extremely capable, durable and best of all, affordable. I encourage any Jeeper to search for a rust free TJ 4.0 I6, preferably stock, 3.73's w/ LSD and a Dana 44. And to use my build as a "guide". But I highly recommend this build for anyone who is an adventurer, not a rock crawler. Best of all, it will eliminate you from chasing your tail, and the aftermarket will have one less "just empty every pocket" victim out there! It was a lot of trial and error but it has been well worth it. 2" Old Man Emu coils 32" KO2's or 32" BFG MT's Quadratec Baja alloy rims - perfect backspacing - no rub! Currectlync steering Freedom Off Road front adj track bar M.O.R.E steering box brace JKS quick disconnects Freedom Off Road front lower Adjustable control arms The rest are Fixed Detroit Axles Transfer case drop kit Fox 2.0 Shox Fox steering stabilizer Professional 4x4 shop to do the alignment Since doing this, I have had the best experience with any vehicle I've ever had. Staying with 32's allows us Jeepers to maintain that great low end torque, saves us a lot of money on unnecessary aftermarket parts and still be able to wheel most anywhere. It's the best of all worlds! One of my favorite mods was added a Banks cat back exhaust giving it a throaty growl, but not obnoxiously loud. Absolutely perfect for the 4.0 I6. Most importantly, be honest with yourself, build your TJ for what you will be using it for. And know YOU CAN do great trails and much more with just a 2" lift and 32" ko2's or MT's! DO NOT let the aftermarket pushers fool or shame you into thinking you "need" 33" - 40" tires and a 5" lift to wheel. That's 🦬💩! They know full well, once they get you at 33's, it's a freaking cash cow for them! Because you just embarked on their multi thousand dollar build conveyor belt. And it's 100% unnecessary for moderate wheelin'! Your axles, drive train, drive shafts, engine, gearing and a host of a lot of other stuff now "needs" to be upgraded. The aftermarket pushers feast on naive people. Don't be that guy! Like cereal companies saying breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the aftermarket will continue to take advantage of the misinformed. O|||||||O 🇺🇲 Only in a 2 Dr 🇺🇲 '41- '06

I agree completely. People have no idea how capable a “close to stock” TJ is. However for the type wheeling we do here in the south east, 35” tires or so are about the minimum to make it through the tough terrain without ripping the undercarriage out. If you do more street/trail than we do, 32’s is about perfect.

@@_everydayoffroad_ Since my family moved, the only off roading within two hours is the Outer Banks. And the TJ is a dd, but I'm working on getting a small truck. If I ever move back to a place that has great trails, I'll definitely get mud terrains and lockers. But for right now, this build has been great.

@@_everydayoffroad_ Well, I am in the process of looking for a set of tires for my newly acquired 03 TJ. I have 33's on it but they are deep tread M/T and are so loud at 50mph I might suffer hearing loss if I don't change them. But they look so cool! I was considering 33's, but maybe I'll go to 32's. I thought the deep tread was the issue of getting over 50mph, but maybe at 3.73 they are just too big. All the control arms have been changed, and it is lifted. With 29's I can get to 70 without much effort. But the 29's look like little toys. Thank you for explaining the issues. I have subscribed now, and look forward to what you dig into. I have a 64 CJ, a 03 TJ and a 14 JK. But the TJ is the real charmer!

I appreciate your thorough comments on why you're good with the 32". I'll humbly admit, I'm very new to owning a jeep (bought an '06 with "56,000" miles on it this past September but that's deceiving because it's not been regeared, thus the odometer and speedometer are roughly 10% less than actual values (but I don't know when it was lifted, so but sure of actual miles)). I have some alignment issues and I can tell the front tires are slightly warped (maybe from me hydroplaning into a curb). They're 33" BFG A/T. Plus the treads are getting low and uneven. I say all that because 1) I don't know all the terminology being used and 2) I'm wanting to upgrade my tire size, but knowing full well I'll need to do a lot of $$$ upgrades to accomplish that. I THINK the Jeep was lifted to 3" and a local 4x4 shop believes that's correct. I don't know. I feel like with the readings off on the odometer and the Jeep sluggish at higher speeds and for sure inclines, I need to regear. I'm guessing it's the 3.07 ratio described in this video? So IF I need to regear, I'm thinking I might as well plan for 35" tires, knowing the added costs for the lift and all the extras described here. What I don't want to do is drop down on size. I like the 33" but wouldn't mind 35". Thoughts?

Again, as stated on a previous comment, great stuff. I just posted a video on a TJ build I did for my dad on my channel jeepNdirt and sort of highlighted a basic 3.5 inch set up. I'm working on a follow up video with additional details, but now I'm thinking I'll just do an intro then refer folks to your channel for this video LoL. Great stuff buddy. The only thing I would add to what you noted is that with 3.5 inches of lift on my dad's TJ, we used the transfer case drop that came with his lift (he was on a tight budget). The front and rear drive line angles (to include the separation between castor and pinion up front) were not bad and we ended up with 7.7/7.8 castor and no vib's. If anyone cares to check out that short video, I will say that I can drive that thing at 70mph (max comfortably due to the 3 speed auto and 4.10 gears) with 2 fingers on the steering with NO problem. It has a very flat and stable feel and is pretty flexy as noted on a couple of the shots I posted. Now his jeep will not be a crawler but will go off road occasionally so with that said I 1000% agree with you in stating that the better way to approach the drive line is with the SYE and the double cardan rear shaft if folks are planning on flexing, crawling, and offroading alot.

You should do a jk video. I just did a 3.25 rc lift and I have no issues. But maybe I'm missing something. My kit was springs. Shocks. Brake line extenders. And rear track link bracket. I installed myself and measured the rear for shifting . The track bar bracket I adjusted and were solid
@EAGLINWRX
@EAGLINWRX 5 ай бұрын
Small note. You want the rear diff to sit at +1 or -1 degree relative to the driveshaft. This is so your needle bearings aren’t stationary on the pitch control of the spicer 4 way bearing in the cardon. If the angle delta is 0 degrees this pitch control won’t rotate as the driveshaft turns and will wear a spot on your bearing internals as all the weight proceeds to only be applied in that one spot.

After running my TJ for about 2 years with a 2" RC suspension lift. My steering gearbox and ball joints went out and had death wobble pretty bad. Replaced the steering gearbox and ball joints and still had death wobble. Then i was told by a mechanic who works on suspensions for a living that I need to replace the track bar with an adjustable one so I did the death wobble went away, and the 2001 TJ rides like a brand new jeep. Great explainer, looking forward to your other videos! I have an 05 LJR with the 4spd auto and definitely needed to regear just going to 33s, I'm in the Rockies too. I went 4.88 which is probably a touch deep, but it's great off road. To further confound things for regears '05 and '06 had a 6spd manual. At 3" lift (full JKS susp/CA/steering kit) it rides like a dream but still rubbed a when disconnected until I did a 1" BL. I also just did 1" (4.5?) of backspacing over stock, which may have not been enough for 11.5" wide tires. What backspacing did you go with for your Methods + 35s? I'm thinking of going to 17s and 35x11.5 so I can get Method beadgrips and go low in the snow.

Great video! Think you covered all the bases and things to think about when doing a lift well. I know several people that skimped out on the upper control arms and regretted it later. That aggressive angle really tears up the stock ball joints. Definitely an important part of any lift kit imo. Looking at upgrading my Sierra to 35 or 37 inch tires. Would it be a good idea to re-gear?

Great explanation. I’ve driven off road for decades in pickups but just purchased an 06 LJ Rubicon. This video didn’t address this particular Jeep. The kids I bought it from put on a 4” lift and 35’s. Other than that it appears to be completely stock. Do I need to consider a SYE and doble cardón drive shaft? Also, it seems to have a bit too much body roll while turning, what sway bar should I consider? Thanks

If I was running a front Dana 44 yes that would be my choice of gearing for 37’s. However with the Dana 30 it is highly recommended not to go above 4.88 gears due to the tiny pinion becoming the weak point in the front drive train. Most local shops here will not even install those gears in a Dana 30.

Thanks for taking the time out and sharing some of knowledge in this video. I've got a 99TJ with a 3 inch RC, and my goal is to run 35 inch tires. How do feel about 1.75 to 2 inch spring spacers with the 3 inch springs instead of a body/motor mount lift? Love the look and stance of your TJ.
@_everydayoffroad_
@_everydayoffroad_ Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately if doing any sort of spring spacer to yield over 3” or so of lift you’ll likely experience driveline issues due to bad angles. If your main goal is to just run bigger tires, I would do a 1” body lift and call it a day. 4” will clear 35’s. But if you plan to do any serious off-roading, unfortunately to fit 35’s you’ll likely need to buy a full lift kit that includes most of the stuff I talked about in the video.

@@_everydayoffroad_ There are advantages to combining a BL with a susp lift (not with a coil space lift). One big one is being able to do a tummy tuck skid so your clearance is flat underneath. At least for rocks and snow wheeling it's a huge advantage getting things tucked up even with the frame.
