If you're in neutral and have a hard time getting it into first gear, just engage the clutch very lightly and you tap your left foot down to engage first. Same if you "get stuck" in neutral when downshifting, say to a stop sign, just let that clutch slip a tiny bit as you tap your left foot.

so. i've seen this a million times now, but here it goes: to get the old air-cooled boxer engines into first gear, you don't have to wiggle the bike around. the trick is to pull the clutch in and kick the gear in, in one swift, continuous motion. basically: pull clutch and before it's even pulled in completely, kick the gear down. works every time. pushing your bike around at a stop is without dignity... i can assure this method works. it's the only method that works consistently. please, people, believe me.

@@sidestand haha. tell me how it works for you ;D just to roughly explain why this is: as i've understood, in the old boxer-models, the clutch-shaft separates completely and comes to a stop, when it is not engaged. also, the drive-shaft stops when at a standstill. now, one has 2 shafts not rotating and the teeth of those shafts might be in a misaligned position when they are put back together from a stop. the motion created from pulling the clutch is usually enough to counter the misalignment of the teeth, but is useless, once a moment has passed between pulling the clutch and putting 1st gear in. hence the solution, see above. lot's of talk, i know, but i hope that word gets out. i can't stand the thought of a bunch of grown-ass men in leather jackets, whiggling their 15000k BMWs around at stoplights...

IMHO, cutting costs is a terrible reason to sacrifice adjustable, quality suspension. EVERY magazine, mechanic, riding instructor & tire salesmen tell us repeatedly that there's nothing between you and a palm size piece of rubber. Then often neglect to inform us how that rubber behaves is almost wholly reliant upon suspension and its settings.

Toe up into second, then down to first. Many motorcycles over the decades have had this anoyance.You can do this before coming to a stop. Then up tp neutral. When ready it will snick into first . Last, try going up into second. Let the cluth out a hair. The dogs will clear and the transmission will then allow first gear. All of these methods have worked for me at different times. Been there,done that for 55 yrs on motorcycles. Cheers

BMW sells an attractive accessory aluminum oil filler cap for about twenty Euros. I find this small flush item makes quite a difference visually. I bought one of the first (regular) R Nine-Ts when they came out. The soft front non-adjustable fork and the harsh rear suspension didn’t agree with me, either. I opted for an Öhlins rear damper unit and fork. This transformed the bike and it now does exactly what you intend. After six years I‘m still delighted with the BMW and want no other. A Roland Sands headlight ring and gauge cluster housing got rid of some of the cheap plastic.

I own a R9T. Most of the issues you mention is because you have the cost-reduced version. Buy the regular R9T. It has a rev counter, it has adjustable rear suspension, and the front fork of the S1000RR. Also, your issue about finding 1st gear when stopped: You have pulled the clutch in too much. Just let it go a little bit closer to the point of engagement, 1st gear slides in smoothly.

@@PInk77W1 yes the motor burns oil. The amount depends on how hard you ride and rev the motor. I usually check the oil level every 300-400 Kms and top it up if needed (usually it does). Topping the oil off is not a big deal, the oil port is just in front of you, given the orientation of the cylinders. This bike is a lot of fun to ride, it will stay in my garage. Read and watch reviews on KZfaq before making your decision. It is also gorgeous 😘

I have a 2017 nine t( the roadster) had none of the issues you told(except fuel indicator, however I never had one any of my bikes, so I dont miss it). My bigest problem with it is the seat. It is comfortable only for an hour. After two hours without stoppnig it is a torture. The oem handlebar was also uncomfortable, made shoulder pain on highway riding. I have replaced it to a 2”narrower risoma, much better. 80-90mph crusing speed is comfy now.

@@sidestand I have the risoma MA009, fits so much better then OEM handlebar, the upper body leans more forward- a sportyer stance, the bar ends band more back than oem- comfortable griping and the elbows are not forced outwards. My experience is that the bike is more stable at top speed, becouse the torso makes less wind resistance. I also have a dart flyscreen, wich I only use on longer highway rides ( i prefers the naked look) but at 90mph for hours it helps...

I'd say the leaky oil fill cap is common. It was happening to my R nineT , brought it in for its service where they changed the oil and it hasn't happened since. I imagine the tech changed the o ring. Not like it leaked a lot just left a film on the cylinder head that could be concerning at first glance.

I just bought the same nine t pure model as a 1st ever bike. I agree on : - the rev counter : just for the look (I shift gear by sound) but it’s no big deal. A gear indicator would definitely be a plus, though - the suspension is way better on the regular R Nine T - The lack of fuel indicator is a pain in the ass, and particularly the reserve indicator that indicates how much kilometers you’ve been riding on the reserve instead of yellowing you how much you have left ! - the gear box is tricky (I actually let the bike fell on the side when it stalled on 2nd gear at a red light) BUT, if you play with the clutch, it works just fine and it is less weird than move the bike back and forth : you should try. Thank you very much for your videos, mate, and keep up the good ride

That's the dilemma isn't, these 4 problemsl?! The major or probably the only reason for buying R Nine T is the design (and the boxer engine) I think. The best solution is to spend another $ 1500 on top of the classic version and get all the possible options available in the industry. You will sacrifice the design, but not the boxer engine. To name a few of the options: Dynamic suspension front and rear Best TFT display with fuel gauge, rev counter, and gear indicator. The engine has more power (136 hp), it's liquid cooled and uses variable camshaft metod. Quick shifter. That's R 1250 R.

Hi !! Im thinking about buying an R nine T , i watched your vídeos and your bike it’s amazing !! What I wanted to ask it’s.. does the R nine T Pure and the R nine t classic change a lot ?
@sidestand
@sidestand 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If you don't want to deal with upgrading the suspension on the Pure, I suggest getting the Classic. If you want to upgrade your suspension later to some proper Ohlins, get the Pure. Also, the pure doesn't have a rev counter. I fitted the OEM tach on my Pure which you could find the install video on my channel. Good luck with your decision!

Part ex’d my Street Cup for a 2017 scrambler in Dec. I was aware of the tach and no fuel indicator which I was prepared to live with. However the first gear issue has happened to me. I ended up pulling away in 2nd. It’s not right surely in a premium German bike like this that first gear can’t be engaged smoothly.

Service is roughly 175ish from a dealer every 5k so so. You could save some change doing it yourself. Otherwise, really hasn't been terrible. Components are bullet proof!

BMW is the kind of brand that price it's self unreasonably expensive to the point they have to strip away essentials inorder to make it cheaper, not to mention their bad quality and reliability that could be easily wipe the floor by a 5 times cheaper Japanese made motorcycles.

I’m looking at buying a r9t and I struggle between classic and pure. For the first timer - do you think the suspension is a deal breaker? How bad is it on pure and how does it impact your riding?
@sidestand
@sidestand 3 жыл бұрын
If you weigh more than 185lbs, I would recommend getting the classic. The spring rate is not optimized for my weight on the Pure. It’s not terrible for me but I just need to be mindful of my speeds especially through rougher pavement. I also plan on upgrading to Ohlins front and rear very soon here. Thanks for watching!
@patison4ik5
@patison4ik5 3 жыл бұрын
@@sidestand Thanks for the reply! Oh well in my case it's interesting - I'm 6'4" and about 145lbs :D Do you think for a light person like me the pure suspension should be good enough? As I never ridden a single bike in my life I have no idea how those two different suspensions may impact the riding experience and whether it's worth spending an extra $4k on the classic.
@sidestand
@sidestand 3 жыл бұрын
@@patison4ik5 Your weight should suffice for the Pure in that case for normal street & occasional canyon carving. But if you want to feel a bit more planted during cornering at speed, the classic suspension is the way to go since you'll have more adjustability especially with the damping on the front forks. Test ride both if you can & see which one gives you better feedback for the type of riding you'll be doing. Good luck with your journey, and welcome! Also as a beginner, I would invest in taking some advanced riding classes (YCRS). It's worth it! Take care.

If you bought the higher spec version of this bike you would account for all but one of your gripes about the bike. Instead you chose to buy the pension pack version and complain. As for the gear selector? ? It’s a heritage bike based on an engine/gearbox design that is decades old. Not needed as you should be banging down to first at every stop.
