When I lived in the country, my chickens were basically wild; they would all sleep in a huge willow tree! I’d find clutches of eggs sometimes in hard to reach places filled with dozens of eggs!! The best was waking up to a surprise clutch of chicks!! Why did I move to the city...??? 😢

Total newb here. Building my first coop now for my first ownership experience.I was wondering about the roosts, the perches. I intended to build using branches rather than square cut lumber. This video provided valuable info that the birds may squat down over their own feet to keep warm. I now think I’ll do 2 kinds of roosts. A flatter broader and the branches idea. Thank you for this.

Don't know if this is helpful at all but for our chicken shed I bought a large piece of rubber mat to lay under the roosts so when it's time to clean I just pour all the poop and pine shavings into a wheelbarrow and use the hose to wash the rubber mat then I put it back under the roost. Works so well and easy to keep clean.

What are your thoughts on the eglu chicken coop? I’m in an urban setting and deciding on the eglu but also can’t decide if I should build a larger coop myself out of wood etc. It would house around 10 bantams. Thank you for your wonderful advice! Huge fan!
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 3 жыл бұрын
Are you getting the larger coop? I can't remember the name of it but I know the "Go" was at one point the small one. If you are getting the larger one, it should be fine, but they will likely need additional covered run space, so that they can be out of the elements during severe weather. I would aim for at least five square feet of space per bantam in the run. The more, the better! The eglus are GREAT coops as far as being super easy to maintain, predator proof, and sturdy. I used to have one and I loved it!
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 3 жыл бұрын
All that being said, if I had the skill and the energy, I would probably build a coop and make it bigger than the Eglu.

Bumblefoot? What is that and what causes that? How often should you clean the poop?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 4 жыл бұрын
Bumblefoot is a staph infection usually in the pad of a chicken's foot. It's a pain to deal with! Poop cleaning varies depending on what method you are using and how many chickens you have! Most importantly, you don't want there to be an ammonia smell coming from your coop.

We have one of those coops with a pull out tray. Horrible desig . if you put anything in the tray when you slide it out, half of the contents get shaved off the top and falls below into the run. Then, when it rains the wood swells and the tray can't be slid out. I don't bother any more and just rake it all out and into my wheelbarrow. What we thought was a great design for our first chicken coop isn't.

I really am not understanding...please tell me that my chicks chirp loudly when I keep them in the cage ;very loud...but when I go to them they become normal and chirp sweetly. What does that mean?

They might be lonely, cold, or hungry. I would make sure they have enough company and that all their needs are met.

Yes! You might have to get some safe supplemental heat for your coop, depending on the breeds you have and some other factors. This video might help you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9OapdSez7GXoGw.html

Cal ranch has them. Ask for the xl bag. I think it’s outside. They have them for horses or something??

Would you say the outside building material matters much? Trying to decide between a resin garden shed and a diy wood coop. Thanks!

Those are both good options! I think it would ultimately depend on your climate and personal preference. :)

If you close your hand and your thumb you notice the shape is round. When the chicken rest on a perch, it is best to use thick natural bamboo because, it is natural, round and the droppings fall off. Chicken claws are not squareness or rectangular shape. Too much poop on flat perches not healthy for the birds.

Is good the you say all the bad things about you chicken coop. Nothing positive about it. Too bad for you. You can ask for someone to help you remodeling inside you chicken coop. Is no dificult to move the chicken nest. Or make a chicken roosting bars.
