Ahhhh...I'm on cloud nine! Dreamed of backyard chickens for as long as I can remember. Blame the Corona or "empty nesting" since my youngest is a 2020 high school grad, but I finally have my first little flock, they are soooooo adorable! Surprisingly I was most attracted to having silkies because of their wacky style and the friendliness but the others are showing me more love than I ever imagined and only after a few days!!! It's beautiful. I was wanting 3 or 4 but my hatchery only had unsexed silkies so they gave me 3 for the price of 1, if I get cockerels I can return them for credit. I'm in the city and we are restricted from having roosters...sorry boys! Chicken math 3+3=6...oops!! Anyway, I'm so glad I found you and this community. My question is about fermenting feed, scratch and peck starter can be fed dry or does it have to be fermented? I'm a bunny and pup mom but I'm new to everything chicken.

I use a large tub with wheels. With 6 0r 8 baby chicks I can keep them in it about 4 weeks. With two of these rolling tubs I can transfer the chicks to the other one or a 2nd enclosure, I can take it out yo the yard and hose it out. In addition I have another on I keep the bedding in it. Both purchased at WalMart. I also cover the bleeding with puppy pads for a easy clean up. With living in Fl. I can move them out to the coop to finish growing them up. I confined them in the house for a couple of weeks and then let them out to the yard. All of the nest boxes were covered up with card board so they do not sleep in them. I will keep them closed until they are about laying age. I really enjoy your channel.

Dang it woman! I was thoroughly ok with NOT having chick pangs this year...and then I watch this video. I had a bad case of “chicken math” 3 years ago..and don’t need any more! Now I’m super tempted again. Arrrgh! Went to pick up feed at Tractor Supply tonight, and of course they’ve got little darlings in there- two were scream peeping (most likely in need of some tender loving immediate care- a.k.a they are probably sick and will most likely die soon in such conditions without knowledgeable care) and I had to tear myself away. I’m wishing I would’ve brought them home just so they can get adequate meds to survive. I really hate to see them suffering! And it’s typically easy to get them to survive when one knows how. It really pulls on the heartstrings. Anyone else get this way?

I have a chicken-laying egg from the rooter bar and the egg is cracked every time. Any suggestions on how to train the chicken to go to the box? Thank you

Is she new to laying? Sometimes it takes new layers a little bit to figure it out!

I will be getting 6 baby chicks in April. Five hens and one rooster. I have a 40 gallon tub to put them in, but do I need to get another one so I have three in each tub; since they might outgrow the one tub????????

Is it ok to put chicks in bird cages instead of boxes?

helloooo - Wasn't sure where to post Q. Will be ordering my first chicks. I am choosing 3 Rhode Island Whites that hatching Aug 2nd and 3 Rhode Island Reds that will hatch Sept 13th. It is March and my coop is nearly completed, but I need to build a run and then another fenced yard semi enclosure for semi free range so I need the time anyway to get projects done, I'm in a very hot climate in sw Texas so 95_ degrees temps everyday in Aug and 90s into Sept. Is buying chicks a month and half apart sensible or stupid for a first time? Or should I just wait and do one order of what is available? I want the friendliest and heat/cold tolerant birds. These seem to fit the bill.btw Winter here we can get down to 20. Thank you!

Could you please advise a probiotic/vitamin/electrolyte mix for my young chickens... I'll be moving them from my wark yurt to a small coop outside in January (I'm on north VI) and want to help them transition easily (they haven't ever been outside)...Also, first time chicken owner, so any advise is very welcome :)

Got a no electric way for warmth? Like deep bed mulch or something?
@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 4 жыл бұрын
Deep litter can certainly help keep the temp up for adult chickens during the colder months. Unfortunately, it’s not warm enough for baby chicks and not safe for them in the coop without a mama hen. I have heard of people brooding chicks with hot water bottles, but I don’t have enough info on that to tell you how to do it! 🐥🐥🐥

Chicks have to be kept around the ninety and eighty degree range, deep bedding will not be warm enough😬
