Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After more than a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels, woodchucks, and even a bear, Bunjie is now semi-retired. Enter Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0, The Slick Black Cadillac of Crossbows) a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker 420, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, a gift from a Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Bunjie III is a testament to modern crossbows, producing over .7 slugs of momentum and almost 140 ft-lbs of kinetic energy with stock arrows--at nearly 400 fps!

Being able to shoot accurately at long range is only half the equation. What is the effective range of the broadhead/ bolt you are using? When your bolt gets to the animal will it have enough kinetic energy and momentum to penetrate adequately and kill cleanly? I’ve read that crossbow bolts lose velocity quickly. Just being able to hit a deer at long range isn’t enough.

That's a great question, and I should have mentioned it in this video like I did in other videos. Believe it or not, an arrow traveling at 400 ft per second weighing 400 grains, which is pretty common for modern crossbows, has about 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy at launch. At 70 yards it still has over 120 foot pounds of kinetic energy! So there's plenty of energy at distance. That's simply not the problem. Keep in mind that my original crossbow at 300 ft per second, only had 72 foot pounds of kinetic energy at launch! Modern crossbows are simply a whole different animal.

Yes a crossbow does lose velocity very quickly and many do not acknowledge this fact however a very up to date modern crossbow like the death stalker 💯 is not a worry at 60 yards or even beyond. But the velocity is also only a factor when using light weight bolts. There is always a trade off in this game and we are never as efficient as vertical. But we can lose some speed/ velocity for a more consistent speed velocity and more momentum to pass through. Its really a what do you want and how do you achieve it while also what does my crossbow like lol. Its a fun thing if it interests you but i will certainly say for most shooters yes high speed equals high loss of speed too. We really are more like a handgun ballistics than a rifle while the vertical is the rifle. Simply because draw length would equate to barrel length. Everything has efficiency but everything also becomes a point of diminishing return when efficiency is maxed out.

Rifles and cartridges are truly under some different equations in truth. If shooting the Nitro 505 crossbow with a 530 grain arrow, you can start out with 465-470 fps. At 60 yards your down to 440-445 fps. In regards to crossbow ranges that doesn’t seem to be a dramatic loss of speed. I can’t even tell you how much energy that is because it makes me pass out. One big enemy of the crossbow hunter is time. “Time of flight.” Can the arrow get there before the animal moves or conditions change?

@@douglasborgaro6801 yes but i was just merely stating from a distance factor only. In comparison that is somewhat comparable to the archery world. A huge misconception is that the crossbow is the longer range archery weapon and that is false the bow is the longer range weapon.

We had an epidemic of long shots at our hunting club this year! Oddly enough, it was the more experienced hunters who did this because they were "such great shots at 50-60 yards ". They completely failed to consider the extra time the deer has to move! One trophy shot in the ham but recovered too late to save the meat. Another trophy wounded but lost. A third buck was missed completely (at least that's the story we got). Never shoot beyond 40 yards!

Thank you for posting that James. Keep it in at 30 yards for the fast Crossbow should be all right. Crossbows are not guns substitute. Wounding animals sucks for the hunters ego but more so the animal suffers unnecessarily. Get her done first time with proper shot placement that means up close.Have a great day.

Rich, I have a 100 yd plus backyard.... LOL. I practice at 50 - 60 yds regularly. That said, I limit my shots on live game to 35 yards or less. I'm not going to judge others. If they're comfortable beyond those distances have at it. For me enough can go wrong within my comfort zone and I prefer high percentage shots. To each their own but know your limits and respect the animals you hunt!

Looonnnnnng shots are only ethical on paper targets. Even at 500+ fps a deer can duck several inches out at 60+ yards and that can mean a wounded deer. The problem is the ability of the deer (even when they seem calm) to react to the sound of the crossbow enough to move the point of intended impact several inches at even 60 yards with a 500+fps crossbow. Until we get crossbow speed beyond the speed of sound (1125 fps) we will continue to have this issue. I can regularly hit a pop can at 100 yards on a calm day with any of my crosswbows but I don't shoot anywhere near that far at deer.

Actually if you go watch the studies that have been done with over 400 fps a deer at 40 yards can’t duck an arrow. There haven’t been enough studies with the latest and greatest 500 fps bows but I’d bet 50-60 yards is easily achieved.

I had one duck my arrow at 32 yards this year. So I know some of you are full of shit. My crossbows over 400 fps. Eventually there will be bunch of dumb rules written cause dumb ass people will keep shooting and wounding deer.

I try to keep my shots to 30 yards or less, even with faster, modern crossbows. In the past, I have taken a few shots at longer distances; some were successful, but others didn't work out, so from now on, I want to be confident that I'm going to get a kill shot.

I have the same bow and scope you have. I practice out to 80yds all the time. But that's not because I'm going to shoot at an animal at that distance. However, if you practice at those longer distances, the 30 and 40yd shots are easy!

I have only ever shot 4 deer. 2 with my inline muzzleloader at 60 and 80 yards and 2 this year with my crossbow at 28 and 50 yards. Tree stand with rangefinder and centerpoiny heat 425. 150 grain swhacker.

Lumix speed ring. Deer bedded down under fallen tree that was 50 yards away. Watched it for 3 hours. Got up 4 times. Decided to take the shot the last time deer had no clue and was just standing there. Hit heart.

3 days left in the 2022 season of awesome and what a year its been, fun hunting and fun from success 4th year of crossbow hunting and havnt fired my deer rifle in that period of time, even to sight it in. Crossbow hunting is truely the balls. All Hale Bungie !!!!

Love my Burris Oracle X scope but my zone of confidence is maxed out at 40 yards. I know I can hit my practice target at 60 yards but i have no confidence in that distance shooting at deer. My crossbow is a KI Swat X1 so it can easily hit the distances past 40 yards.

Let me reiterate... it doesn't matter if you can shoot a mosquito at 100 yards. Unless you're shooting at Mach 1 speed (1100 fps), the deer will hear the shot before the arrow arrives and they'll start leaving.

But they don't "disappear" when the sound gets there...they have to react and drop, which all takes time. You are way oversimplifying it LOL. If it was as simple as you make it out to be, then we'll simply couldn't ever kill anything with archery equipment.

My number one concern when shooting long distance with my Ravin Crossbow is String Jumping. Even at 420 fps……It’s a real concern.

I also want to touch on what you said about hoping not being a good strategy….that not only goes for shot selection but also for stand or blind location. Be in your location for a reason wether it be hot sign, camera pictures, food or bedding; not simply because you killed a deer there before or because it “looks good”

I have hunted archery over 40 years. Several years ago i squeaked a coyote into 40 yards. I tok my shot, by the time the arrow arrived and he had spun and run several yards.

nothing changes anything for me....50 yds max with my crossbow if no wind and perfect conditions....but honestly 40 is more my comfort zone.....people should watch slo motion videos of bow and even crossbows to see how much they can be off with just a little wind.....the arc, the left and right.

My Horton fury is rated at 360fps, I shoot quality Black eagle executioner bolts with 100grn Toxic broadheads backed by 100grn of extra FACT weights. I shoot consistent groups at 60yds and it hits hard!

This year we were hunting on a gas line right of way about 60yds apart. My friend shot a doe and I actually heard the arrow hit the deer before I heard the noise of the bow going off. So it seems that the jumping the string has been minimal with these faster speeds.

I agree with what you said. I hunt with a crowsbow, but have NEVER took a shot at an animal past 40yards. It is not that I can't shoot any farther, my friends and I love to go to our range and see who can hit the target at the farthest distance. It is due to the fact that I hate shooting any animal and not getting a kill shot.

Good video Rich and coming from you it carries a lot of credibility and weight to the subject! One of the Regional Water Authority hunts I've participated in specifically instructs all who participate in this hunt to not shoot beyond 25 yards, regardless of weapon, crossbow, or compound! I missed a buck at 15 yards once because the arrow deflected off a branch which of course I didn't see!

You should try the ATN X-sight 4k pro with the ABL. You can record all of your shots and the ABL will range your shots for you with rifle or crossbow.

My longest shot was around 35 yards. My stand is on a hemlock patch overlooking a hardwood opening. There's a path 45 yards out my left window that deer are constantly coming out of. Most of them continue straight ahead. If a monster buck comes out and it don't turn in my direction, I might have to test that distance. 🤔

Most of my shots have been 20 - 25 just because of where I hunt and with my 10 year old crossbow with sub 300fps I've never seen any of those deer jump the shot at those ranges. But with that same xbow I have if I shot at 40 - 50 I believe they would have the ability to jump my shot.

By far and away the BEST advice in your video is "Shoot more deer." I could not agree more. Why do basketball players endlessly shoot free throw drills? It's a close up, straight on EASY shot to make but coaches insist on lots of free throw practice. They know that if you get skilled at making a basket....any basket...that the techniques and confidence will carry forward into other shooting situations. Same thing with shoot any archery equipment for deer. I'm not saying just practice on a stuffed target but saying the shots you need to practice most are those you get a chance to take on live deer. I consider myself to be extremely good with my crossbow, in fact, I rarely miss on any type shot....on a stuffed target that is. But earlier this season a big doe stood in fading light at the end of legal shooting hours about 25 yard straight out from my stand. She was still and broadside across an open food plot. What could possibly go wrong? I aimed correctly, fired properly, and watched the deer react. She was at full alert facing me so when the crossbow fired, she reacted at maximum speed, dropping a little and whirling back around to run the way she came. My arrow's bright little light was stuck up in the ground where the deer had been just gleefully glowing at me saying "You missed!" Deer can move with incredible speed. I have shot my crossbow at greater distances this year in my practice shooting simply to be ready if and when a responsible shot opportunity arises to take a deer at a little longer distance. My equipment can do the job easily. But given the ability of a deer to be evasive, I would still only take a shot at long distance when the situation was in my favor. Except for the zombie with the angel above his head that kept popping in and out of the side of the video frame, this was a good educational video about the factors to consider in attempting a longer distance shot.

I shoot more than most compound shooters lol. My zone of confidence with my matrix 380 is 40 yards the speed is 350fps with a 410gr arrow. I have no interest in shooting at a deer past 30 lol. 40 is max for me. No bashing anyone for the way they choose To hunt just my thoughts here. Another great video Rich! Practice makes perfect.

I have always practice /my greatest fear is wounding a animal and not bring able to find it /if it's past 40 yards I don't shoot it's tough to let a deer go but I confident up to there and that it's /I always chk my yardages earlier in the season so I know them

A few years back, I was scouting for moose in an area where it was Bow/arrow only for a few weeks. MYSELF, I am not a bow hunting. ANYWAY, 4 moose I seen with arrows sticking out of them.... I guess that's OK according to fish and wild life

Rich, now that you are a saddle hunter, you can push out a few more yards on a target, simply by climbing higher in a tree. Climbing up between 20 to 30 ft would do the trick if the tree is on flat terrain. However, if you wish not to climb that high, you could pick a tree located on the side of a hill.

My longest shot was 70yds. Biggest buck i ever seen, i hit him with a clean pass. Don’t understand where I went wrong but he got away. Tracked for almost 4hrs and lost the trail in an open field. I was sick about it for days, heck im still sick about it now. I won’t be doing that again. I hate the feeling of only wounding an animal. I use a Ravin R26 stock scope.

That's the biggest problem with these scopes, you have to have one on everything you use and it gets pretty expensive pretty fast haha

Deer react faster to noises that are close to them. I keep my shots 30 and under. I have a Scorpyd thats going 450fps snd have been testing the deer on my range. When they are 80 to 120 yards out they dont even flinch when I shoot. They run when the arrow hits the target. Im sure my range deer are not typical woods deer you will encounter everywhere else. Im sure they are accustomed to my shooting every day. I build rifles and shoot on my private range very often. Deer will come out and feed minutes after shooting stops. Just neat to see how little reaction there is from them when they are farther away. My crossbow it pretty loud too. Much louder than a Death stalker. Not a bunch faster either for as much more noise it makes. To do it over I would probably get a DS instead. My micro suppressor 355 only gets 320 with the arrows i use. Its killed every deer I shot so far. Longest 30 yards. As far as the long range goes I believe there is a window from 30 to 80 yards or so that deer do react to the shot fast and can move before the arrow gets there. Just observing my deer once past 80 they dont react at all. When I say my deer I mean the ones on my range. These are wild deer not fenced in. Be nice to see some testing done on this subject. My state doesn’t allow field points in the woods while hunting. But I would love to see how the deer at 80 to 100 react to a shot in my food plots. There are videos from a guy shooting deer at 60 yards and they seem to get hit before they move. He is shooting a Scorpyd also.

Great comments here, thank you, I agree at some point it probably is more about volume and the type of sound it is than it is just the fact that the sound was made. At distance I don't think they'll react the same as how they do close up but I'm not aware of any actual evidence of that of course. Other than videos we've watched.

Some peope think they can reliably hunt at 500 yards plus with rifles. Very few can, even with a $10,000 rifle. I dont take shots past 40 yards archery or crossbow.

Say what you will but shots by compound vertical bow hunters out west of 50-60 yards are very common these days as out west bow hunting for white tailed deer but especially Mule deer spot and stalk are way way more common than stand hunting and I personally see no issues with taking a 50-60 yard shot with a vertical compound d bow if conditions are acceptable and your abilities as an archer and your equipment are both truthfully up to it I have personally killed enough deer at 40-45 yard shots with my vertical compound bow to know it is absolutely doable I will grant you though my vertical compound bow is very significantly more quiet at the shot than a crossbow 50 yards with my vertical compound bow is my personal shot limit only because I have no where I can regularly practice beyond 60 yards and my personal rules are I must be absolutely dead on 10 yards past my personal limit to shoot that far So to shoot past 50 yards I must have access to a 70 yard range I can get to 4-5× a week and unfortunately I do not The longest range I can shoot to safely is 60 yards And the reason I absolutely love Wasp Boss SST FBBH's is because they fly over 90% as well as FP's and are just scary scary hair popping sharp ROOTB and 9/10 have spin tested perfectly for me and zip through deer even at 45 yards like their made out of a sheet of wet paper Not advocating irresponsible shots with a crossbow just saying long shots with modern vertical archery equipment are very doable In a stark contrast NEVER hit and lost a deer I shot between 30 and 45 yards Only three deer I hit I failed to recover were all shot at under 25 yards all were because my arrows hot something in flight resulting in a poor hit And when I take a shot over 30 yards I purposely aim at the bottom 1/4 of the deer's chest so if he does drop the string Ill still most likely double lung him and I will not take a shot over 30 yards without LRF the deer as under 30 with my vert/cb 5-25yrds I need only one pin I have two crossbows enroute to me I will do much testing to see if shots between 40 and 50 yards have the same potential to be successful as with my vert/cb bow and decided from their.

The question about long shots is something that can be directed at me some times when shooting the Nitro 505. I do not consider myself a long distance crossbow shooter. Do I think the 505 will take a deer at 60+ yards. Yes I think it would. But 50 yards or less is my range.

Shot my Indiana Doe this at 77 yards double lung she ran about 35 yards missed my buck at 32 yards no telling how far he ran. I practice and I’m comfortable with kill shots up to 90 yards with my RAVEN R29X. Respect the wild life too much to take a gamble past 90 yards 👊👍😎

I've been following you for a few years now ( I want to get a Scorpyd crossbow too) and with your new crossbow you are shooting a markedly faster arrow. However I don't see you stressing enough on keeping the shot distance within a "short" range. Something like 40 to 50 yards as a maximum? My reasoning is as follows. I know your arrow is travelling much faster than one from the original Bunjie. However deer reflexes are still the same as they have been for, probably, a few centuries. Maybe even a few millenia. Deer can, and WILL, move once the sound of the shot reaches them. They are primed to jump whenever they hear a sound they don't recognize. Especially a short, loud thump or twang sound. With the current arrow speeds out to about 40 or 50 yards the arrow can reach them before they have time to react enough to create a miss or to make the shot placement poor. Beyond that range they have lots of opportunity to move enough to really mess up an otherwise perfectly placed (planned?) shot. No matter what crossbow one is shooting, 400 or 500 fps, one needs to keep the range close enough to ensure a clean, ethical kill. Which means keep the distance short enough that the arrow can get to them before they can reflexively move.

Well I did say twice in this video that closer is better lol but I get what you're saying. I done a lot of videos on deer ducking the string because it was a problem I faced with that older slower crossbow all the time. Yes, it's still a problem with a faster crossbow, at certain distances. That's really what I'm exploring in this series of videos. Very, very good points. But this is exactly where shot placement come in and where to aim. I always aim the Vital V for the heart. 10-50 yards. Always all the time. I use a heavy bolt to account for a what if deer moves this way and i hit shoulder. No problem i will go through both shoulders. Deer ducks its vitals and major blood vessels. Deer stands still with a big cut head its heart and front lobes of the lungs. Deer springs forwards its still centre mass lungs and or just the back. This is where it’s important to have the plan B arrow or bolt as the plan A. And as always a clean miss is always preferred over a bad hit and a wounded deer. This is where having a big cut mechanical with a heavy weight comes in. If something should happen and go horribly wrong like not being perfectly levelled and slightly canted and you hit bad…. Not everyone’s setup will be a passthrough or a big enough cut to make a kill. Yes closer is better but this is why aim point and arrow bolt setups matter. Deer can move at 10 yards and duck too if conditions are right for it. The likely hood is slim but never none.

The only problem with zooming in for those long distance shots is that if you zoom in too far, there isn't enough room in the lens to show all of the reticles. You have to zoom out to get dots at those long range distances. It's going to vary from one crossbow speed to another.

I don’t know I really stand by the fact that we should not ever be exceeding that 50 yard max (unless necessary survival or war.) Sure practice at longer to make that shot and in that much better but never take an animal with it. I really stand by this. We are not rifles we are archery we should stand by that principle. Just like its unethical for compound guys to exceed it and most do hell few even do a hundred with their vertical bow and its just not appropriate. I do know that the death stalker can certainly do the kill at longer ranges without worry i get that but still we are a close range weapon. Always will be. I think it’s absolutely fantastic that crossbows made a huge advancement from what they used to be, we are now in war bow category and its about time lol. But still i am just glad you had a successful long shot kill and recovery. I know how horrible you’d feel if something went wrong and you did not get the recovery. Rich like everything the more you do it the more likely one day something will go wrong. At least if 30 is the new 20 than 50 is the new 40 and thats where we should really stay. Its less for things to go wrong its a 99.99 percent chance of always a pass through even on a shoulder blade without fear, its less affected by wind and other elements but when you start to go past that you bring all these back into the equation and even more the earth’s rotation at certain distances now becomes a factor.

You can't hit a little Branch if there's no little branch, so I think every setup is different. But a lot can happen at that distance that's for sure, with the deer moving and whatnot! So I do agree it's risky.

Maybe this will explain why myself and others have seen so many deer running through the bush with a cross bow bolt sticking out of it's neck or ass during bow season? not joking! a few years ago i passed up a shot on a small buck early in the season which as a bow hunter i don't do very often. only to see a cross bow bolt sticking out of his neck when it went trotting by me after i let my bow down! shit happens but how could you miss that bad unless they were aiming for the neck. then a year or two later i had a friend from work who is not a hunter had a doe come running through they're back yard with a cross bow bolt sticking out of it's ass right by the sand box when the wife and small kids were outside. then shortly after two hunters with a crossbow came walking through their property. apparently his wife was not too happy and expressed it to them. i think most cross bow hunters are overconfident in their equipment and do not practice with it much. not all but most! and yea shooting at an alert deer from any distance with any kind of archery gear is always risky.

@@Deathbybunjie That's a shame! bow hunting has never been popular here in Canada most archers use a cross bow. and most people that don't hunt with a bow don't know the difference. rifle and shot gun hunters lose more game up here than anyone. for the same reason they don't get out and practice or if they do the shoot from a bench at the range not from a standing position. i think you are on the right track in saying this long range hunting is getting a bit much. bow or gun! Bill Wendzel and his brother have shot over 25 pope and young bucks each all with a recurve they said all of them were shot less than 20 yards with most kills within 10 yards!

This new disdain for extended range is nothing but another attack on crossbow hunters. The reality is compound bow hunters have been taking 60-100 yard shots for ages. Even popular hunting celebrities like Tim Wells, Cam Hanes, and the guys at THP are applauded for it... But now that people are doing it with more effective equipment it's "unethical"? It's so easy to expose people that bash those for longer shots of their hypocrisy. Close range shots with traditional equipment are MUCH lower percentage shots than long range shots with a crossbow and that's proven both theoretically and practically.

The main form of attack from anti-crossbow people is "These guys are taking long shots and wounding animals". When in reality Compound bow hunters were the ones that STARTED the whole long range shooting trend.

If your taking shots over 30 with any stick and string your not doing your job as a woodsman. Bow hunting is about how close you can get to your quarry, not how far you can shoot.

Well, you can call it if you want, but you would be wrong. A 400 grain Arrow at 400 ft per second has over 140 foot pounds of kinetic energy at launch. Believe it or not, it still has over 120 ft lb of kinetic energy at 60 yards. In fact, it has over a hundred foot pounds of kinetic energy at 120 yards! Compare that to my old, slow crossbow shooting 305 ft per second with a 350 grain arrow? That crossbow never reaches 100 foot pounds of kinetic energy, pretty much ever. Not even heavy arrows get it to that point. So, modern crossbows are just different.

A $1300 scope doesn't mean you should be taking 50 yard shots with your Xbow. Your previous video with your $4000 setup proved that. The original videos used to be something to watch. This channel used to be great. Now not so much. Let's be honest the people watching this channel watched cause is was relevant to them, now all that is show cased is a $1300 scope and the advantage of it. 👎

The Garmin is 1300, this is 900 LOL. I hear what you're saying though. But keep in mind, one reason I upgraded was because my 2010 crossbow was simply NOT relevant...slower than 80% of viewers' crossbows, based on polls I did. Now, at 400 fps or so, I'm in the mix with viewers and thus, more "relevant." Big thing for me isn't "relevance" though, it's avoiding stagnation, which turns in to boredom, and would cause me to move on. I don't want to just keep shooting the same deer out of the same tree stands with the same crossbow forever. Nobody wants to see that.
