Time? Oh when it comes to my hair I’ll MAKE time. Before you see the end of this routine… over or under 20 minutes to apply products, define curls, and diffuse dry? I challenge you to time your routine without interruptions and see how long it takes you. Don’t rush, just move through your routine with intention, making sure each curl gets attention and see how long the hair lasts you. All the time you invest will 100% be worth it!

Honestly, I’ve just cut down on the amount of time I use masks. Plus, I’ve been taking good care of my hair for years now, I don’t need to deep condition for 20 min anymore each washday. It might be different if your hair is more damaged though. ❤

I have 4 including 2 under 2 and I finally found something that works - When I'm done showering in the evening, I put leave in spray and whatever other products while my hair is really wet. Then I scrunch with a microfiber and plop it. Later, I let it air dry a good bit, then right before bed I spend a few minutes blow drying. By that time, it doesn't take much time to blow dry. Put some oil in, and the curl still looks great the next day. Takes barely any time, good after the kids go to bed or if my husband can watch everyone for 15 minutes in the evening.

Or someone with other things in their life besides HAIR. I like my hair looking nice but in no way is it a priority. And honestly it shouldn't be! None of the women I've worked with (who are much more successful than I am) pay THAT much attention to their hair. They pay attention to their jobs, their schooling, and their health. I was heading up the curly bandwagon for a couple years until I noticed this, then jumped off. Having good hair isn't worth everything else. So now I use decidedly NOT curly-approved products, wash my hair everyday, and let it air dry. I look decent and my whole life is better, not just my hair.

LOL for real. It's because I have my priorities straight that I don't have time for an 18-minute hair routine that will actually take me longer because I'm not a professional stylist, don't have the money to be product shopping for products that work with my hair type (I've tried so many, listened to so many recommendations that make my hair feel and look awful), and honestly, don't have the capacity to dedicate that time to it because I physically cannot. Maintaining curly hair is difficult, and this is coming from a white girl with white girl curls. I have it easy compared to people with other curly and textured hair types. Also, it looks like she at minimum washed her hair or maybe showered before this (the bathrobe is a giveaway) so really it's not an 18-minute routine lmao I'm editing to add that also, for some of us, this isn't just a couple times of week thing. Refreshing my hair includes washing it more frequently than a lot of curly girls because my hair is very fine and product buildup, oil, and the environment in which I live destroy my curls easily. It's a curse to have hair that naturally dries very curly but can't seem to actually h o l d its natural pattern.

You don't need expensive products. You need moisture and hold. My shampoo and conditioner are $4 each, gel $2, mousse $5, hairspray $2. They make universal diffuser attachments, so if you don't have one, you only need that, not a new hairdryer.

Huh? Youre just literally making any excuse. Oh poor you! Is that what you want to hear? Look, either you want to spend time on your hair, or you dont. You dont need any special treatments. Eva nyc hair mask is amazing. Shea moisture makes tons of great products. You just put on a hair mask while you shave and wash in the shower then rinse and youre done. Get out spray a leave in and throw on some mousse or gel, and youre done.

You were born with curly hair no? So unless you coloured the crap out of it or heat styled it religiously for years- which costs money or the price of a flat iron - what treatments do you need?? We come out of the womb with this hair we just need to add moisture and hold, which is now available in the dollar stores if you need a cheap option?

A trick I learned from my stylist is to apply your choice of styling products while in the shower. I limit myself to using 1 or two products for those extra lazy or busy days. And then wrap your hair with microfiber towel or t-shirt as you finish up with your shower. This cuts down the drying time.

I have learned SO SO MUCH from Mell over the past 2 years. I saved this video because I can never get the herring bone pattern thing done correctly on the top of my head. I just realized from watching this short tutorial that she combs it all forward on the top half and works from the back forward… I tried this today, using AG products Mell recommended in prior videos. It took me about 35 minutes from start to finish instead of 2 hours (including the shower), and the top of my hair finally worked out! My hair looks great. My biggest issue: My hair always looks like someone used my head as a wet mop while I slept. …😂 help! I think Mell does a fantastic job of mixing low and high end products so people of all budgets can have beautiful hair. Many of Amanda’s go-to products are not expensive. I would never have known how to begin to style my curls without watching her videos. Plus, Mell is hilarious and kind. Mell has perfected her hair routine by doing it on KZfaq so often. She has worked so hard to get where she is today. I love Mell and I’ve learned how to make my curly hair look really good. Thank you, so much for all you have taught those of us who have paid attention, Melissa. I actually enjoy doing my hair, I absolutely love your videos. You always cheer me up and make me glad I took the time to watch. Keep up the great work. Sending you so many warm hugs from one curly girl to another… ❤😊

Hi Mel, I love your clips and am following you and your sister for a while. Thanks for all the great content. Could you maybe make a clip for everyone who isn’t able to like in the shown clip? This would be so great. 😍 I’m thinking of girls with longer hair, more curls, busy mums, busy jobs, people who are sick or handicapped, people fighting after a loss of a loved one and many other struggles in life. It’s not just about priorities, some of us have good reasons why we struggle. For me there are two handicaps plus illness for many decades. A really minimal hair care routine would be appreciated (probably not just by me) 🥰

genuinely curious, do you have a routine that's actually half this amount of time and effort? for us curlies who are neurodivergent, disabled, or otherwise struggling with mental health? because for me, 5 minutes to 10 minutes tops is my absolute limit. i physically can't do more than that and it's not a priorities issue. i really enjoy your videos and i know you've mentioned wanting to see more inclusivity in haircare, so if anyone could give us a super short routine for less abled curlies i can't think of anyone better than you!

Maybe skip the multiple steps and do a one step method that is moisturizing and defining in one? For one product I like the shea moisture coconut and hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie. It’s very creamy so if you have looser or finer curls I would maybe dilute with water or use something else from that line. There might one of her older videos that she does a one product routine but I can’t recall if that was her or @mzbiancarenee

One thing that works for me is to wash it early in the evening, put in some product, let it air dry. Then put it up in a pineapple with a silk scrunchie and it's fine. Second day, maybe spray a little water on it? Pattern makes a great spray bottle. Don't stress.

I can't dry my hair in 18 minutes, let alone any other styling steps! And it's taken me 4 years on my curly journey & I haven't fully perfected my routine yet. I'm still getting to know my hair as curly so it's still hard to even duplicate results. I'm also disabled, in chronic pain with chronic illness. It takes me at least an hour but it's not because I don't have my priorities straight - I can promise you that. Now even with it taking me as long as it does I still say that for me, it's worth it. Because I don't have to do much on non-wash days so I just wait to wash until I have spoons or a burst of energy. So it's still worth the time because it saves time on subsequent days. You could have delivered a very similar message in a much better way. 🙏

I permanently straightening my curly hair not only bc of how time consuming styling it was, but because of how much time it took to dry. I would wash it at night and if I didn't spend a few hours drying it, the time I spent styling it would be ruined if I slept on it wet.

It doesn't have to take *hours* people! I just accept the little texture I do have. Wash, put it up in a microfiber towel for 5 minutes. Take it down. Wet brush it. Split it in half. Scrunch product in each section. Air dry for as long as I have time (always wash on a Sunday), then all I need to still do is diffuse for about 5 minutes. Done! The time I had to have hands on, very little!

@amixeblu I recently cut my hair because the length + thickness made it unbearable. This is why I'm only blowdrying for 45 minutes. When I say I have 2 heads of thick hair on my head, I mean it.
