Dance is such an on-character casting for the role of Tywin. There's a lot of subtleties at play here. -He uses appropriate royal terms, but does not bow to Joffrey. -Joffrey complains about the Small Council meetings, which he does not attend. -Tywin DOES attend, and uses the same argument of travel time for ACTUAL work. -When spoken to in a demanding way, he steps forward; causing Joffrey to recoil slightly. -Tywin is tall, he towers over Joffrey (great camera work) -The symbol of the Hand of the King is worn at an angle, not upright. -Tywin leans into Joffrey being a child, telling him he can be "carried" if desired. -Joffrey, petulant little sadist that he is, correctly brings attention to a potential threat. -One of Tywin's few, but blatant, weaknesses is exposed. Concerned only with the here and now. -Scene ends with Tywin not waiting to be dismissed. He pauses twice, readjusting himself to the center steps. All this in 3 freaking minutes. 1 min of which is done in complete silence.

2:40 this line shows that Varys had been actively misinforming Tywin about the nature of Dany's dragons in order to keep his attention away from the matter. This might be the only time where from a strategic point of view, Joffrey is right and Tywin is wrong.
@SRK_H_M_W_A5 ай бұрын
Varys then proceeds to accurately inform Tywin about Dany acquiring the unsullied and Barristan Selmy as an advisor following Joffrey’s demise. It may not have been so much on misinformation as it was that Varys needed more time for his sources to get the message to him.
@TheMisterGuy5 ай бұрын
"this line shows that Varys had been actively misinforming Tywin about the nature of Dany's dragons" Are you sure the dragons were proven to be a threat at that point? Early on, nobody even knew if the eggs could hatch, let alone that these dragons would grow to be the size of ancient ones.
@aswinastroАй бұрын
@@TheMisterGuy Actually, Tywin is right. In the world of GOT (both the books and the show) -Baby Dragons take years to grow and almost decades to reach the heights that Balerion or Vhagar did. Balerion for instance was already around 100 years at the time of Aegon's conquest. I think Meraxes and Vhagar were around 50-80 years old - I can't remember their exact age. As GOT does not have internet and the spies who pass information from one corner to other may take months, there is a strong chance the information Tywin got was at a time when Danny's Dragons were mere babies, smaller than your house pet.
@TheMisterGuyАй бұрын
@@aswinastro " In the world of GOT (both the books and the show) -Baby Dragons take years to grow and almost decades to reach the heights that Balerion or Vhagar did." But...in the show...Dany's dragons grew to massive size over a period of like, ten years. Are you saying that was highly unusual? I don't know if that's "full" size but they were enough that a single one of them could torch King's Landing and the Red Keep in a day. "As GOT does not have internet and the spies who pass information from one corner to other may take months" Ignoring how ravens seemed to operate at the speed of cell phones by the later seasons, that's fine with me, but Tywin would know that. Everyone would be accustomed to how long things take and if your spy in Essos says they saw something, you mentally add six months or whatever. You'd be in a world where you understand you're playing a very long, slow game with big delays in communication and travel time.

Yep That boy was immature, psychopathic and cruel. But he wasn't dumb. He was the only one concerned with the dragons (and he was right about that), he was also the one who had the idea to create one army (as opposed to each kingdom having their own) trained to be faithful only to the Crown. He also understood Cersei's manipulation tactics and put her in her place more than once. He appreciated Margaery's more subtle ways of manipulating him and allowed her to do so. He wasn't stupid and, maybe, with Margaery by his side, he would have become a good king. And Cersei wouldn't have had the guts to kill Margaery and the rest. Tommen was too soft, had she done that while Joffrey was still alive, he would have executed her.

Look, we all HATE Joffrey, but tbh, he’s actually the more rationale and intelligent person in this scene. @user-it5td8hg4iАй бұрын

Joffrey: complaining about potentially having to walk up stairs to attend council meetings he never attends Tywin: an old man, walking up a flight of stairs in Joffrey's direction without any complaining
@alexblake536914 күн бұрын
To be fair though it's more about the symbolism than it is the actual walk. The small council works for the King, not the Hand, so they should meet in a position that's most convenient for the King, not the Hand. By having the small council meet in the Hand's tower Tywin is basically stating to everyone that he is in charge, not Joffrey. And he pretty much is. Joffrey is just a figurehead while Tywin is, for all intents and purposes, the real king of Westeros. Tywin, and the audience, may roll their eyes at Joffrey's poor excuse for not attending the small council meetings but he actively encourages this behavior. A real Hand of the King would be dragging Joffrey to these meetings while lecturing them about the importance of these meetings and how he is to lead them. Tywin doesn't actually want Joffrey to become more educated and a better ruler, because that would represent a direct threat to HIS power. Tywin is not the Hand of the King, he is the Shadow King.

One of the things that I like about the character of Joffrey is that... he's actually right. He is right to take Daenerys and her dragons seriously. And this isn't the only scene. There is another in the first season where he's talking to Cersei and he's asking for his own standing army, personally loyal to him, instead of the different nobles. And this is what happened historically, power becoming more and more centralized in the hands of monarchs led to reduced reliance on fickle nobles to provide military service and the creation of standing armies personally loyal to the monarchs. In all his insanity, Joffrey has moments where he's actually right.
