I just received my first Grand Seiko, the SBGX115. It is by no means a new GS. I bought this pre-owned from Exquisite Timepieces. These were made for a relatively short time, about 3 years, I think between 2015-2018. As such, fairly few examples come up for sale in either this silver dial variant (yes, it mostly looks white, I this may be considered an opaline dial) SBGX115 or the black dial variant SBGX117.
This and other Grand Seiko watches from a particular era were double branded with SEIKO being the dominant brand logo at the top of the dial and GS Grand Seiko at the bottom half of the dial. Some didn't like it, some did.. I personally never found it too strange and actually rather enjoy this quirky branding choise.
It is oddly cool and defines a specific period of Grand Seiko production when they did this and since Grand Seiko has been moving forward with just the GS Grand Seiko branding on all their watches subsequently since, this unique group of GS watches with the double branding will only become increasingly more a rarity within the vast and continually growing catalog and history of Grand Seiko.
I also enjoy the fact that this watch is one of the few dive watches that both Seiko and Grand Seiko have made that has no date. It is just a clean and perfectly symmetrical dial which I find most appealing for a tool dive watch. Just give me a simple read on the time and passing minutes to reference against the rotating timing bezel.
One more note about the dial, I believe it may be the only "white" dial GS diver. Another unique aspect about this particular model reference I can appreciate.
Approximately 5 years later as of the original time of this posting, the SBGX115 was one that always stood in my mind as a straight forward handsome Seiko dive watch.. and one with a white dial and black bezel, which is maybe my most favorite color combination.
So, I finally got one and pretty damn happy about it. With the current trend to go smaller and derive styles from vintage models, this watch is considered a bit larger than most may want at the moment. I measure 42.5mm at the bezel, but I could round that up to a conservative 43mm much like an SKX. But, just like an SKX and many other Seiko dive watches, they tend to wear at least 1-2mm smaller on wrist than raw spec measurements may seem to indicate. It's just the way Seiko does their dive cases with the combination of proportions, cuts, bevels, contours and finishing that make them wear visually a bit smaller and definitely quite comfortable on wrist. For me, I feel the SBGX115 wears like a 42mm on wrist.
