It's Not that hard to find a pet friendly place. I can understand financial reasons, but still think that it can be fixed and keep the dog. I moved a LOT and never failed to find a rental , and had a 160 pound Bullmastiff once, too.

In general I agree, but always remember there are legitimate reasons for having to give up a dog. I'm not saying that's what happened here tho. They did say that the family moved and couldn't afford to take her with them (either by paying for a pet friendly apartment or paying a pet fee). Now if they just moved for the hell of it then absolutely their fault but that isn't usually the case. Maybe they couldn't afford their current home, or maybe that had to move for a job either because they lost their old one or they're being offered more money. A big pay bump can change a families life completely, is it worth it to give up on giving your child a better future and potentially escaping poverty for the sake of a dog at the end of it's life. Us dog lovers may think so but most regular people won't. Again I'm not at all saying any of this happened, just giving examples of what could've been going on. There are plenty of other reason people give up dogs such as. Ill health, either physically or mentally. Either one can make looking after a dog impossible. Being unable to cope, not everyone can look after a dog (hence why one can end up in a crate for 14 years), if your in over your head giving up the dog is the right thing to do. Poverty, If you can barely afford to feed your kids how can you feed a dog. It's not fair to let it go hungry. I expect a lot of dogs are gonna end up in shelters for this very reason over the next 2 years, Which is terrible because shelters will be receiving less money and so inevitably there'll be a massive uptick in euthanizing and it's really no ones fault. Again I'm in no way saying that this family were definitely in the right, we don't know their situation. I'm just saying that whilst many who give up dogs are POS (and if they are wouldn't you want them to give up the dog) but definitely not all. Gotta remember that you can't judge someone without knowing their situation.

@@MsMarco6 You give some good examples there and yes there absolutely are legitimate reasons as to why people become unable to take care of a pet; what I’m referring to are cases where people give up a pet entirely for selfish reasons. It’s “inconvenient”, in other words. 😊
@PersonTP
@PersonTP Жыл бұрын
@@MsMarco6 definitely agree that there are legit reasons, but you should never get a pet if you don't know if you can provide for it ALWAYS, meaning if you know you don't get enough income to also take care of the pet then just don't get one, but let's think about the bright side, at least they didn't put the healthy dog down and gave it to a shelter instead.

We have a 2 year old bulldog and then we adopted a six year old female bulldog that was retiring from breeding. She is so sweet and starved for attention. She was not used to being a pet just housed. She has medical issues we're over coming and she's had surgery on both eyes but doing better. She's happy and loves to play and loves toys and food! So happy we have them both. She also never drinks from a bowl. It is apparent she was never provided water. She is also been abused because she is deadly afraid of sticks like the swiffer. My poor Yorkie mix. I rescued her from the US (internship) and brought her home to Germany. My family went into debt so I could have her papers and intl transport not in cargo. I’ve had her for 4 yrs now. You all sound like naive children. Keeping a dog for 14 years obviously means they loved her. You don’t know their situation. If it was in California it’s likely they couldn’t afford where they were living and had to move elsewhere but couldn’t afford to keep the dog. They did the responsible thing of bringing the dog to shelter and not abandoning her on the street so be grateful for that.

Maybe they lost their jobs, and had to downsize to a smaller home that didn’t allow pets. Do you really think a family, that cared for a dog for 14 years, would really just give her up on a “whim”? They were likely forced to surrender her to the shelter.
@gingerchipper

Also Cupcakes I can’t speak for these people, however, there are people who simply don’t want to “deal” with the unique needs/veterinary care (even if they can afford the care) that many senior canines require.

I hope and pray people stop ditching and giving up these poor animals . They will forever look for their owners. I could never be a foster. I would want to keep them all . I hate crates. Sometimes common sense has to rule over sentimental animal love. Because in their best intersts letting go was the best I could do, for all of them found new homes( 2006). I am going to assume that the negative 'thumbs down' are from people who are rightfully outraged and appalled by the callousness and lack of empathy shown by the people who surrender these golden oldies. Why not drop grandma off at the shelter, too? We have two rescue german shepherds: one is now 12 and a half. We treasure every second with him and pamper and spoil him to the max. Our biggest sadness is that we got him when was five and missed that time with him but we will always adopt. When I am an old timer, I will adopt a load of old timer pups so we an all potter around the garden and dodder along on slow walks together and enjoy warming our creaky bones by the fire!

So heartbreaking. The poor thing looks so bewildered. She's very, very lucky. Seniors are special babies. I had a 12, 14 and 16 year old,. I became critically ill, was rushed to the hospital, and didn't even get to say goodbye to my babies. After a month, the trusted "caregiver" got tired of taking care of them, and instead of taking them to a shelter for temporary boarding, she had them euthanized because they were "already old." After years of loyalty and love, they died scared and alone. I have never forgiven her, or myself.
