This is the Overview of the reasons to use a NAS (Network Attached Storage) for preserving a Physical Media Collection as well as being able to view your physical media on your own personal streaming service as you travel or when your on the go wanting to view from your personal device. You can literally cut the cord to those greedy streaming server platform owners for good!
There will be more episodes in this mini-series detailing the process and the how to's - this first installment is simply an overview with some perspective as to "why" a collector of physical media may want to do this.

Thanks! I really am enjoying ripping my collection. It’s gonna take a while to catch up to ripping them all but will be worth it once I’m done. Going to continue this mini-series as I get time to film. Since I’m new to NAS - what in particular do you like about QNAP over Synology? Just curious… I will say I wish the Synology I have came with a GPU. As I travel I’m seeing it has zero issue transcoding 1080p but my 4k rips…forget it. So I may need to get an Nuc with quick sync or something and use it as my Plex server, or just rip only in 1080p and if I do rip 4k just plan to only watch like for like at home.

@@ungraduatedmedia Like you I did an exceptional amount of research. Both QNAP & Synology are like Intel & AMD, superb products and always trying to get one up on the other, so either is a good choice and both understand the importance of multimedia access & streaming...

I am learning if you are needing to transcode, this DS1621+ may not be the best option for Plex. Fine with 1080p but if you have 4k bluray rips you better plan to watch without the need to transcode. For me and my travel, that is my issue. I’m transcoding a lot. While at home I’ll watch all my media on “physical media” but while traveling I’m watching on my tablet. As awesome as this unit is, it doesn’t have a graphics card so I’m looking to get an Intel Nuc with Quicksync so I can use it as a Plex server over the DS1621+ Learning as I go…

@ungraduatedmedia You're definitely going all in, which is the only way if you want the best result. You could select the movies you want prior on a portable drive as well. What are your thoughts on the included digital copies?

@@LaughMuBai- I’ve honestly not checked out any included digital downloads because of the compression that is typically used. If I’m going to retain the “digital copy” I want it in the best quality so I’d rather rip them all uncompressed. Even if I have to transcode them on the go, I still have the 1:1 rip from the disc uncompressed if I would ever need to or want to stream at my home.

I just staring to do this myself i have already uploaded 300 blu rays and 100 dvds of old shows that aren't on blu ray. I got the qnap 4 bay nas with intel that has gpu link i just have one 20tb drive im going to get more later i just wanna be up again going lol

Awesome! You made a wise decision with the GPU. I’m quickly learning as seamless and awesome the Synology DS1621+ is, it lacks the GPU for transcoding and that can be problematic for streaming on the go, depending on the bandwidth of the signal. I’m going to need to get an Intel NUC and with quicksync and use it as my Plex server so I can transcode seamlessly. But it is fun doing this process and then rewarding to “take your films with you” wherever you go.

@ungraduatedmedia you did good though that nas is very good it has better software then qnap only downside they don't really offer good hardware like the qnaps does. Yes of course I love it some people think it a waste of money but they don't understand why I'm doing it I'm done with those streaming services when I can make my own but better and the best part they will never be removed or edit it into a snowflake movie with good parts being cut out or censored
