Growing up we knew it was the Confederate flag, but that isn't what we called it. It was always called the rebel flag. It symbolized rebellion. The VAST majority of people who fly that flag do it as a symbol of being a rebel.

I'm 62. I listened to this when it first came out. They were one of my favorite bands, along with the Allman Brothers. In these unfortunately divisive times, your ability to be open to the music and to not get hung up on the fact that they flew that certain flag, makes you my hero. Young man, you are making more sense than anyone else I've heard in the last few years. You take away my stress. Thank you and enjoy the music.

I'm 68, and grew up around the world, cuz my father was in the Air Force. I lived In Louisiana from 64 - 69, and saw a lot of racist crap there, but also saw a lot of great people too. We then moved to the panhandle of Florida, which is where Lynard Skynard, and saw the same there as in Louisiana. There's good and bad people everywhere in this country regardless of race, color, creed or religion. Just take the time to talk to them before you judge them.

@@laurakali6522, he really did. After Ed King (one of the three guitarists) left the band, there was a black guitarist who they wanted to join the band. I wish I could think of his name. I think he was put off about the use of the flag. Ronnie tried to convince him that it was just a record label marketing a southern band. They stayed with two guitarists for a while before Steve joined. I’m actually going to meet Gene Odom next month, and he’s going to take us on a 4 hour Skynyrd tour, and for some reason I’m hearing the theme to Gilligan’s Island in my head. LOL. Thank you for making that point, Greg. My kids have Oklahoma roots and J is the closest thing to Red Dirt Royalty, so he’s legendary in my family. I interviewed him in the late 90’s at Cain’s Ballroom in his hometown of Tulsa and ended up hanging out with him all night. I remember telling him that I read a few years earlier that in the 80’s he had lived in a POS trailer in L.A. and all he did during those years is mow lawns and listen to Rap and Van Halen songs. He smiled and said in a barely audible voice, “Those may have been the best days of my life. I never charged anybody for mowing their yard. I was still living off of the ‘After Midnight’ money and the trailer wasn’t too bad, man.”

Southern rock is the kid brother of the blues. And as a Scots-Irish guy myself, you're spot on about the flag. I don't go flying it around myself, and I hate the baggage that seems to come with it, but for most it's a heritage thing. Aside from it being a regional and cultural symbol, in the context of Rock and Roll in the 1970's, the Confederate Battle Flag had no racist connotation. During that period, it had been co-opted by the counterculture as a symbol of rebellion against the Establishment. Sometime in mid '80's to mid '90's, any racist connotation it had, began to be dredged back up by politicians and the media to divide people.
@sunshynff
@sunshynff 2 жыл бұрын
@@sparky6086....Well I guess people are talking about the flag anyway...... I call total bullshit on your comment. I'm from the south, it's not a cultural or regional symbol unless you're from Northern Virginia and have an ancestor that fought under that flag and General Lee, and if that's the case I'd say why would you celebrate a regiments that fought for treasonous traitors that attacked this country and then lost? I'll give you that it became a symbol of being a rebel in the rock-n-roll scene and in Nascar, and I have no animosity towards Ronnie and the boys or anyone back then that didn't know any better, and I don't think Ronnie or the band had a racist bone in their body. Fast forward to 2016-ish when statues really started coming down, and people being outspoken about the flag, at that time the computer and internet were a household item, and this issue had been debated online, on tv, on radio for years at that point, there is no reason for people in the mid 2000s and especially now not to educate themselves about the flag. It was never co-opted by the counter culture, I grew up playing in bands and listening to all kinds of counter culture punk rock, non radio shit, and I never saw people using that flag as anti establishment symbol. I mean I saw regular folks using it as F-U to government but more like from a place of the Duke Boys, and running moonshine and saying F those taxes, that type of rebel. I don't know what your referring to in the 80s and 90s and someone "dredging up" it's racist connotations, it's racist connotations never went anywhere, they were firmly applied to that flag, around the turn of century, when the south wasn't to happy about the black folk getting rights, and the Jim Crow laws were being put into place. Any of them get to fancy for their britches, they'd find themselves hanging from a tree by their neck, and just about every single lynching in that time period, the bars n stars was draped over the body as a warning to other black folk to stay in their place. Again in the 60's leading up to the civil rights movement, the rebel flag was the most recognized symbol used for intimidation of black folks. I'm not even saying someone can't fly it, if they want to ignore the racist connotations that were unfortunately placed on it, that is your right to do so, as a free American, but that freedom doesn't grant you freedom of criticism or consequences of your actions. So to all my brothers n sisters of the south, If you want to throw in with the likes of people that betrayed our country, and lost the war, and a flag that was a tiny part of it, and claim it as heritage, have at it hoss, but I know for a fact we got way more history and heritage to proud of down here in the south, way more than some dumb battle flag. I love my south, it's got a few issues like my old Chevy, but I wouldn't trade her for nothin.

Man I love just the way the confederate flag looks like and to me I don’t think about black and white It’s time to take the color away from people and don’t judge someone by the color of there skin To me it’s more about respect and how people treat you

Mad respect for you Sir, as a white north alabamian I gave my stars and bars away because I respect how offensive it is to black race. As far as colors and design baddest flag ever. Btw, huge Skynyrd fan and you correct, not a racist bone in Lynyrd Skynyrd. Cause Ronnie your the finest singer to ever moan the blues. CHRIST Jesus bless you and yours

Hey Biz, I really like the way you do a reaction. Straight forward and honest. Skynyrd was not a bunch of racists. Just a bunch of guys from Jacksonville who loved playing music. Ok, here's a request. I Know a Little. And thanks a bunch.

From what I have read, use of the Confederate flag was foisted on the band by their record company MCA. They didn't want to do it but the marketing team thought it would help sell records.They started their career playing in black-owned bars to black folks in Jacksonville, so I would assume their hearts are/were in the right place.

@@lefty5757, no. I was only 7 or 8 when they played there. Developers were going to tear down that beautiful theater, and Skynyrd put on three shows to help save it. They were successful. The live album, ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD was recorded there, and went gold and then platinum. They gave Atlanta’s mayor a gold album.

That's one song that you will, from now on, catch yourself singin' or hummin', just about anytime you are in a good mood and gettin' things done, cuttin' grass, workin' in the garage, drivin', whatever. I've been catching myself doing it since I first heard the song back when the Second Helping album first came out. My grandkids think I'm nuts sometimes because of it. That's cool. We have fun.

you got it exactly right i just moved south from new york, and to most people down here they are just proud of the south, and the flag and do not see it as racist, but i can also see how somebody can be offended by it, its a tough situation but we cant run away from our history we hopefully learn from it , but i can tell you lynyrd skynyrd was not trying to offend anyone and were just proud of where they came from

The family and living band members did an interview in a recent documentary and said they would never want that flag to offend another. They would not fly that flag today knowing the effect it has on fellow Americans. The documentary is called "If I leave here tomorrow ". Great incite on the band and their music.

Love Lynyrd Skynyrd! I'm went to a concerts 💯💮❗❗❗ after the plane crashed which took Ronnie, Stevie and Cassie. 1020 1977 was the end of Skynyrd as we know it. They started the band with appeal the original members. The new Skynyrd does not have Ronnie Allen Leon Collins or Powell. Always listens to Skynyrd songs, before the crash date. The Skynyrd now has one last number, Gary rossington. The guy that wrote that smells about. Ain't Life something else, I love their music, their vibe, and that they made it as high as they did. America's answer to The Rolling Stones. Kinder, more insightful, and unique then any other southern rock group. ....💃✌💪😂😍🚬🎹🎼

I'm also from the great state of Georgia. The flag represents to me the heritage of my ancestors who fought for the politic as in we are having today. I'm not prejudice. Nor am I racist. My family never owned slaves. We poor as hell. Too much is labeled. I'm a Christian and I love everyone. When we get to heaven the Lord is not going to call you by your skin color . He's simply going to say come here my child.

A different Skynyrd sound in "On The Hunt," very gritty. A musical "feud" developed between Neil Young and Skynyrd. Young had highly-regarded songs like "Southern Man" and "Alabama" which criticized Jim Crow conditions in the South. Van Zant, with Rossington and King providing the instrumentation, wrote "Sweet Home Alabama" calling out Young for his songs about the South -- and had a major hit doing it. Because of their seeming defense of George Wallace and Alabama, some thought Skynyrd was endorsing Jim Crow. That wasn't it, just that Van Zant thought Young was taking cheap shots; Neil didn't entirely disagree, and never held a grudge about it. On the first track of his subsequent "On the Beach" album, Young responds with "Walk On." I hear some people been talkin' me down Bring up my name, pass it 'round They don't mention happy times They do their thing, I'll do mine End of "feud," in 1974. There's some songs to try, from Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I'm sure you would enjoy You Got That Right. It features Steve Gaines along with Ronnie Van Zant on lead vocals. This song along with Ain't No Good Life, which features Gaines as solo vocalist, were the only Skynyrd songs prior to the plane crash that had someone else besides Van Zant doing vocals.

I saw these guys do this song in May 1976 and just to bring you up to 1970s speed, this is what they used to call a "performance song." Performance songs were meant mainly for the stage and couldn't be captured well in the studio environment, hence they rarely got any radio time. Don't know if it was because the band fed off the energy of the audience and sounded better or what, but performance songs just did better live. Even though "Call Me The Breeze" was captured well in the studio, it was mainly composed to show off the musicianship of the triple-attack guitars, showcase Alan Collins incendiary guitar solo & Billy Powell's piano work. So... you REALLY had to hear this performed live and feel your spleen rattling to the vibes to truly enjoy this tune. Nevertheless, the studio track sounds pretty great.

my grandparents were in Virginia considered the south of course. Grandma sweet as could be, all those southern expressions. She was raised not knowing or believing black peoples were equal. I straight up asked her one time, she could not answer. That junk didn’t rub off on me. I had thought once that generation died off, racism would end, but no.
