Paul Simon: 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, Kodachrome, Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard so many more. Paul Simon grew up in Queens, New York City and so did I (he is about 15 years older). When I hear Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard, it reminds me of growing up in Queens where my friends and I hung out at the schoolyard. Kodachrome and Cecilia give me those feelings also. Great memories.

Paul Simon is a genius. His Graceland album is amazing! He combined South African music with his style and it's incredible! I especially love "Diamonds On the Soles Of Her Shoes" and "All Around the World".

You are so right! I had the privilege to see the Graceland Tour with Ladysmith Black Mambazo at the Universal Amphitheatre in L.A. back in the day and it was incredible! LBM's voices live are incredible to behold. "Diamonds in the Souls of Her Shoes" about the South African diamond miners is a great song.

Biz, I posted the following Paul Simon suggestions 3 weeks ago, in the comments for your reaction to "The Boxer": "Kodachrome", "Mother and Child Reunion", "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard", "50 ways to Leave your Lover", and then the official video for "Call Me Al". You'll see why Paul Simon was WAY more than 50% of S&G... 👍

Paul Simon is the songwriter and Composer of most S & G tunes. They both sing, and the harmonies are their bread and butter! Art Garfunkel was the higher, angelic lead voice. Paul Simon had the lower voice that also buoys the harmonies, but he goes sing lead on the verses of some songs. For Paul Simon sólo work there are many. His African inspired Graceland album was very successful and included collaboration with many top musicians from Africa to bring authenticity to the rhythms and vibe.

This was written and performed by a very young Paul Simon in the Sixties. A lot of great songs off this album and S&G in general, then of course Simon continued to write hits in his solo career. 👍 Generally S&G are both singing in a song of theirs, hitting those harmonies.

American Tune is another great Simon song that he wrote after break up of S & G. There are live versions of the song where Garfunkel joins in the singing. I recommend studio version of the original with just Paul Simon. This song is more typical of songs he wrote while with Garfunkel. Deep lyrics, beautiful melody. So my top 2 solo Simon recommendations are 1. Diamonds on the Soles of their Shoes 2. American Tune

The verse after the verse you like; “people talking without speaking,...” is: "Fools" said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence This to me has meant that people talk but don’t say anything. Please hear but don’t listen to the message. Please write song but they aren’t shared for fear they will disturb the sound of silence, which I interpret as the status quo. He says silence like a cancer grows meaning to me if you stay silent and never challenged the status quo, nothing will ever change. I sure other people will have different interpretations and there is probably something online but I thought I’d share what it means to me.

I kind of get the impression that it's about repression of the voice of the common people. "the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls". Like, they're afraid to speak their minds out loud, so they write their thoughts and feelings anonymously in public places where they can be shared with others.

If meaningful lyrics are something you love, then let me just say that S&G have some of the most poetic ever. Others that are famous for their lyrics are Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, DAvid Crosby, NeilYoung, James Taylor, Leonard Cohen....all part of the great singer/songwriter period of mid-sixties to the eighties...Best bands for lyrics, IMO are Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Tool, Rush, Yes and some of Zeppelin. And many songs in the grunge genre.

Think of the time this song was written. The anti war and civil rights movement were going. Many people wanted to do as they always he’d and remain silent to the obvious wrongs. “Silence like a cancer grows” a person can speak but not really say anything real and you can hear the commotion but not listen. You have a song in you but are to afraid to share it. Think of the history when that song was written and give it another listen! Oh FYI Simon started this song while having to be “Silent “ while in the library. AMAZING
