In this episode, we will "only" cover two watches with star auctioneer Aurel Bacs, but these two very unique timepieces by Patek Philippe will most certainly make some very lucky collectors very happy!
And again there are some pretty fascinating stories behind these watches, one of them illustrating rather well how complex a client-brand relation can be.

They have a 2499 naturally at every event. What he means is we have a ton of these sitting around and we only release one at a time so that we don't flood the market and tank the sale prices. Creating artificial demand makes this dude richer. He got the collector by the balls with his story telling.

I am curious to know the story as to whether Patek did managed to re-establish the customer’s trust in them or not, and if the former, how did they re-establish this apparent lost trust. If the latter, why did the owner keep the watch for so long?

Spending hundreds of thousands for a specially requested watch from such an established company one does not expects to find such simple mistakes. A place where you expect perfection the owner might have thought that if such people can make mistakes in simple components like strapes what will they do to the complexities.

It seems very strange that a collector would react in such an extreme way to a simple (and easily fixable) mistake by the person who fitted the strap prior to factory sealing. I imagine that the vast majority of buyers would either laugh it off, or regard it as a minor irritation. I suppose it is a quite bad quality control howler, especially with such an expensive grand complications watch. Perhaps it is understandable that he wrote to Patek to make them aware of what happened. But still, I struggle to see that this merited two whole years of angry correspondence, followed by the guy refusing ever to wear the watch!? It is a strange and really rather sad story. It almost seems as if the customer took what happened as a deliberate snub towards him by Patek...?

TBH super high end watches are really just an investment, your never going to wear a watch like this, it will spend its entire existence in various safety deposit boxes until it goes up for auction again. I suppose what Im saying is its something you can never really enjoy owning.

Not true. The 2499 is from 1979, at that time Lange & Söhne as a brand didn’t exist anymore. In 1990 after the fall of the wall the brand was reborn and only 1994, the first new L & S models were presented.

Goes to show you that even successful/logical people who make a lot of money, can also be illogical to covet such items. Luxury goods or art only have value in the eyes of enthusiasts.
@ikbrrrr
@ikbrrrr 3 жыл бұрын
This is not illogical in the slightest, quite the contrary. You don't pay 200k+ for a watch because it's a damn good watch, you pay it for the attention to detail and the overall special treatment. Imagine buying a Ferrari, brand new, beatiful and fun -- but once you sit in it you see the ashtray is dirty. Cleaning the ashtray? 10 seconds. Moment completely ruined? Definitely. I am 100% behind this fellow.
@mariahlin5556
@mariahlin5556 3 жыл бұрын
@@ikbrrrr It's not logical to use the ashtray as an example. People do not overpay for the attention to detail and special treatment. They pay for the brand and "prestige" of owning something others that are unable to attain for ego (an illogical trait). No matter how much attention u put into a watch, it doesn't cost 200K. Unless you're a highly inefficient worker. Take a Grand Seiko for example, quality for a fraction of the price. Period.
@ikbrrrr
@ikbrrrr 3 жыл бұрын
@@mariahlin5556 that seems like a very immature line of reasoning. The attention is not to the watch, it's to you. You are the special thing in this equation. You get treated to the highest standard, you get the thing that very few people get to own and you do so in the nicest way possible. The moment that last part failes the entire thing is invalid. And that is what cost this much money, this is why second-hand watches are so much less expensive. You don't get a "bargain watch", you just don't get this incredible experience of getting to the retailer, a talk, a coffee, a really nice and attentive staff. Of looking at the collection, of looking at that very special piece you ordered, especially if it's a direct order from the manufacturer. Does it really cost 200k? Well, for some people -- sure. Perfection is, in fact, quite expensive.
@mariahlin5556
@mariahlin5556 3 жыл бұрын
@@ikbrrrr The irony is that to be mature, is to realize that the thing about luxury watches or goods in general are mostly fluff and ego. A mature person would understand that it's just superficial. There is only so much watch complications to have for it to be practical or even logical. Just have to face the simple truth, a watch can be so beautiful or advance, but if it doesn't haven an expensive price tag or popular brand attached to it... then not many people really care. And it's silly to call many such expensive watches perfection because... in fact its using an outdated technology... it's just adding pointless complications in most cases and tedious details for zero logical sense. Take an RM for example. Ugly to be honest.
@ikbrrrr
@ikbrrrr 3 жыл бұрын
@@mariahlin5556 i must disagree on numerous points. First, it's craftsmanship. Basically the less people can do it, the more valuable it is. By your logic, there's no reason going to a virtuoso pianist's show because, well, there are so many ways to play so much more advanced music much more precisely (MIDI!), yet here we are listening to a lady booping keys on an instrument of a 300 years old design. It's not ego or fluff, it's beatufil, it makes you feel things, and you can recognise the lifetime of work, dedication and sacrifise that went into that mastery. And that's what makes it valuable. Second, you don't buy a luxury watch to tell time. Come on. You're buying a piece of craftsmanship, art, a story, a conversation starter. You buy an experience, and the process of buying is very much a part of this experience. If you want a precise instrument to measure time, you never use a wristwatch of all things. A human is clearly the weak link in this equation. Lastly, I think being mature is realizing that people are different, and your own experiences and preferences are not universal. It's okay to enjoy an overly complicated, overengineered piece of mechanical and jewelry mastery on your wrist. It's also okay to enjoy the thought that you are oh so much smarter that you can do better things with your $200 g-shock than a gentleman with a $200k greubel forsey. And there's nothing illogical about either. I think people should generally do whatever brings them more joy. If it's collecting vynil in 2021 -- cool. If it's playing an outtdated instrument -- super. If it's dressing as tacticaly as humanly possible -- amazing. Electric car or the loudest V12, g-shock or patek, classical guitar or an MPC, vynil or CD come on. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You would be surprised how much insane engineering and advanced material design goes into an "ugly" RM.
