Today is definitely a day that will go down in watchmaking history since it has been more than 300 years that the Huygens principles of regulation remained unchallenged and this day has finally come!!!
The genius Guy Semon, CEO of the LVMH Science Institute, and his team have been secretly working on a totally disruptive approach to the most important element of any mechanical watches: the regulating organ. This has been achieved through creative thinking and some very clever transfer of technology and the result is a monobloc silicon oscillator beating at 15Hz and super precise.
This is will what you will find out in the above video report, as we were privileged to meet this incredible team a few days prior to the official launch and are delighted to share on this very day this massive breakthrough.

I was heartbroken when I found out this was already 3 years old. But I agree; traditional watchmaking combined with new technology is pure magic. Compliant mechanical design, Topology optimisation and generative design Additive manufacturing. These will be key elements in future mechanical engineering and design, regardless of discipline.
@alabrrmrbmmr
@alabrrmrbmmr 2 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way but now it is 4 years old. I'm fascinated by compliant mechanics and here I thought, wow! A product! But is there? 4 years later, Zenith has not employed this movement in any new watches. Why? Sometimes I wonder if the theory of compliant mech has only very narrow practical use case. I mean, otherwise, we would have so many consumer products that use this material science. But we don't. And here we see what looks like an amazing implementation but 4 years later and it is completely forgotten.

It's probably too fragile to be used as a watch movement, or too expensive to make (hardly a problem when talking about luxury watches).

As Neil Armstrong would put it: "That's one small step for a brand, one giant leap for the watchmaking industry". As always you have presented us with the best report about this very intricate new technology in watchmaking. I had the pleasure to hear about it in early May at a Collectors Dinner with Mr. Biver and Anish, but it has exceeded my wildest expectations. This as you said will surely prolong the live of mechanical watchmaking and the possibilities within. Cheers from Olten, Giacomo

Now this is what I would call a new caliber! So many of the so called new calibers coming out of the watch companies these days are not new at all. They are just minor variations on existing mechanical designs and do nothing new in terms of accuracy, efficiency, etc. This is truly an innovative mechanical movement design. It will be exciting to see it evolve.

Very exciting! Look forward to seeing this technology make it to Zenith's mass production. Love my Zenith El Primero 411 movement and this is a huge step for the brand. This should put them ahead of the pack of the mass production brands, like the El Primero did in 1969.

TheWATCHES.tv would you be so kind as to also feature a video about ball ceramic xv watch? Like maybe comparing it to other diver's watches in its price range.

Prof Moriarty Seiko Spring Drive is still the most precise movement. So stay with Seiko for the time being.

+Martin R. Krause I agree. I was being somewhat flippant. However, the Seiko Spring Drive is very complex and uses electromagtism, an IC and quartz -- all very intricate. What amazes me about this new technology is that it is purely mechanical, incredibly accurate and uses so few moving parts! Addendum: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/epmjY9xi0qvJZHU.html (worth watching)

An absolutely great video but there's one thing missing: An example on how this clockwork sounds outside and inside a clock housing. I can imagine its rattling considered how fast it was. Like a: drrrrrrrrrrrr sound.

Once again Marc, you stepped up with the best explanation vide about this cutting edge, super accurate, next gen movement from Zenith; FANTASTIC and thank you! 🤘 I watched the livestream but I think this video is an amazing summary of the tech and ideology behind the Defy Lab piece. I would have liked to have heard a bit more about the Hubolt's involvement with the Zenith Defy Lab, in particular the crazy case made for it (only Hubolt could make cases like this ha ha!), but perhaps a follow up video to talk about the timepiece as a whole? Thank you again for your superb explanations and mastery of speaking! 😄⌚💓

Thanks so much and indeed the case is something special on its own as it made of aerolith, a super light aluminium composite material. All the very best to you and thanks again for the input!!

No problem Marc, you know that we all love your content! :D Yes aerolith that was it, using (sintered?) aluminium with bubbling, and something else to make a composite, and this creates that unusual case, which I personally love ^^ Can't wait to see more videos dude!

That's really impressive! Although I must admit that the thing that shocked me the most was the breguet 7727 with the balancier rotating on one single pinion in a magnetic field. I feel so excited about all these crazy novelties, and I wonder how mechanical watches will be in 10 years. Thank you again thewatches.tv, there are different watch sources that I follow, but your channel is truly the most interesting, I never miss an episode ;) come one day to visit us in ZeitZentrum
