I wish the Slow Mo Guys could film a quarter-dial view of the Spring Drive, if only to clear up how many times the 'Tri-Synchro Regulator' 'intermittently applies a magnetic brake' per second. I recently added an Omega Seamaster 41mm to my collection, but in the next case was the GS line and I was very... tempted. In the end I really had my heart set on a diver so I went with the Omega, but if they'd had that green dial SBGV245 I might have come home with two watches. Until you see a GS close-up you have no idea just how amazing the fit and finish is. It almost doesn't look real. The quartz is simply the best of its kind and the spring drive just glides. World-class.

I would absolutely consider it. Aside from the movements being absolutely top notch, the finish on cases and dials equals or exceeds most of the Swiss brands. As for quartz, there's a limited edition green dial GMT that uses a special aniversary version of the 9F movement that's accurate to 5 seconds a year which I'd happily own and wear. GS watches are incredibly underrated and given the level of watch you get, absolute bargains. At some point, more watch collectors are going to realise that. I hope to have a couple of my own before that happens.

And for the price, dollar for dollar, I ended up with a limited edition piece instead of a basic model swiss. I also believe that my Automatic Seiko movement is (like it was in the past) more if not just as accurate as Swiss movements today. It would be nice to get a nice Swiss watch, but I appreciate the accuracy of my quartz and automatic watch - now to save for a spring movement. In terms of perception, I see value in both the Swiss's and Japanese's approach to product creation....even if the discussion would be Omega vs Grand Seiko, and I'm glad that the two have differences while competing in the same space. Having owned a number of rolex, tudor, JLC, sinn, omega and others, I can confidently say that, for me, the GS is the best of the lot. Best value - for the hand finishing and accuracy you get. Best looking - the 44 GS design is just gorgeous from all angles and makes you think just how lazy some Swiss producers are. How many rolex are cased identically? Best dials - come on, there's nobody like them, just look at he new white birch. If they ever manage to shave a couple of mm from the height and add a micro adjustment to the bracelet, then they really will rule the world. The new high beat and spring drive movements are unbelievable. More accurate than anything else, finished to ALS standards. Just next level stuff. I've now got three GS watches and I feel very lucky to have them.

I just began my watch journey this past weekend with a Seiko 5 SNK-793 and a Timex Weekender. I'm wearing the Seiko at this moment, and his little documentary just made me proud of it. I bought it because other reviewers recommended Seiko 5 as a good value for a starter watch, but now I can appreciate the corporate culture and history behind my affordable little timepiece, even if it is to its Grand Seiko relative as a snowman is to Michaelangelo's David. :)

Personnally, I find the Swiss watchmaker companies' mentality to have been so despicable all along watchmaking history in their competition against Japan that it's well enough to keep me from ever buying Swissmade watches. They can keep their crazy marketing and insane skyrocketting price strategies by artificially creating imaginary shortages for themselves. Seiko has been first in ALL domeins, and remained very humble, which Swiss makers were never able to accept nor manage. This brand deserves the most genuine respect.

Fascinating. Japan (particularly Honda), nearly destroyed the British motorcycle industry using basically the same playbook, proving once again that laurels are a dangerous place to rest.

@CaptainFury767
@CaptainFury767 5 жыл бұрын
@@pyeclam Thank you for your interest. The short answer to your question would be "Both, and then some." Disclaimer: The cause given to the decline of the British motorcycle industry depends a lot on who you ask, and my opinion is worth no more than the next guy's. It certainly can't be blamed on any one single event, but it is undeniable that the appearance around the beginning of the 1970s of inexpensive Japanese bikes that didn't leak oil, had better electrical systems and brakes, and benefited from advances in engine technology had a lot to do with that decline. (At the time, Triumph's flagship Bonneville was still powered by an engine largely unchanged from the engine Edward Turner developed in the '30s.) Add on Japan's development of mass production techniques, throw in labor problems in the UK manufacturers at the time... You see where this is going. The Japanese basically upped the game and the old guard, which really hadn't made significant improvements in decades, struggled to catch up. Don't get me wrong - I love Brit Bikes from that era and have owned several. Also, Triumph in particular has recovered well under the leadership of John Bloor and currently makes outstanding motorcycles. But for quite a while back then, when I really needed to go a long distance in a hurry I grabbed the keys to the Honda and left the Triumph in the garage.
