Sergeant Tibbs doesn't get enough love. He risked his life to save what's apparently a natural enemy of cats, and even though he's terrified, he's protecting the puppies when Jasper and Horace are approaching. He was willing to die for them. He didn't know the parents were coming. Give a medal to that cat!

Random Animation Nerd here: the reason the animation style is so sketchy and different from the movies that came before it (like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty) is that the directors were 1) looking at contemporary art of the time period and 2) a new animation machine was invented which allowed the animator's drawings to be put on screen directly instead of having an assembly of people to ink and color each frame on a cell (so it was like a new type of scanning system). Because of that, the lines of the animation were sketchier and less refined (you can sometimes see circles or construction lines), so they decided to create sketchier backgrounds and effects to match.

My favorite thing about this is Pongo and Perdita just deciding then and there "These puppies are ours now and we're going to keep them safe." Think about how hard it is to keep track of 99 puppies in a snow storm! Nevermind they'd probably each blend in! But Perdy kept up the lead and Pongo held back to make sure eveyone was there!

One of my favorite things in a Disney animated film is Roger aggressively playing the trumpet at the floor when Cruella first visits. I continue to laugh as long as I keep thinking about it. I also quite like the very British Army network that the London dogs have. Chain of command and all that. I'm sure you'll get to it at some point, but I'll still suggest "The Aristocats".

27:40 Because she wants them. In the original book she's married to a furrier out of her love for fur coats - she's the last of her family so she made him change his name to DeVil - he's a small worried looking man but we take it from their Persian cat that there's no need to feel sorry for him because he's just as bad as she is "the only difference is he's weak and bad while she's strong and bad". Her plan initially was to make the coat reversible (she planned the coats more specifically to be worn for spring wear over a black suit) with Dalmatian fur on one side and Persian cat fur on the other and to wear the Persian cat out until everyone had forgotten about the 15 stolen ones so that they Ould start on another Dalmatian puppy farm. She doesn't like her cat that much and wants to drown her, only doesn't because she was valuable. She drowned all of her cats kittens though (42 to the last date if I remember correctly) because none of them have been 100% Persian cat. Her cat takes her revenge but ruining the rugs and woodwork in the house and scaring off the servants by making them think the house was haunted. She moves in with the Dalmatians when the story is over.

In the background you can see 5 dogs which are in Lady and the Tramp during the Twilight Bark sequence (Jaq coming out of the doghouse, Peg and Butch in the petshop, Lady and Tramp in the street after the limo goes by), Due to the commercial failure of Sleeping Beauty (1959), production costs needed to be cut. As a result, this was the first Disney feature film to use photocopying technology (Xerography), which made an animated film with this much visual complexity possible. It also set the visual style of Disney animation (a scratchy, hard outline look) for years until the technology advanced enough (with the production of The Rescuers (1977)) to allow a softer look. Not sure if you picked up on it, but the dog Roger saved was the one named Lucky and When the puppies are watching TV, you can see that the spots on Lucky's back form a horseshoe - a symbol of good luck, Cruella's telephone reflects her mood! Watch the face on it closely each time Cruella's mood changes The birth of the puppies actually happened to the author Dodie Smith. Her dalmatians had 15 puppies, one was born lifeless and her husband revived it. However, they sold most of them, and kept only a small number. When Walt Disney read Dodie Smith's story in 1956, he immediately snapped up the film rights. Smith had always secretly hoped that Disney would do just that. The filmmakers deliberately cast dogs with deeper voices than their human owners so they had more power. This was the first Disney film to take place in a modern setting (actually takes place in the 60’s), I know I read before What the announcer at the end of the Kanine Krunchies commercial was going to say, but I can’t find that information. Bill Lee is Roger's singing voice. Four years later, he would go on to provide the singing voice for Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965). Ben Wright who provides Roger's speaking voice also appears in The Sound of Music as Nazi Gauleiter, Herr Zeller. There are exactly 6,469,952 spots on 101 dalmatian dogs and puppies as they appear in 113,760 frames of film. A spot check reveals that Pongo has 72 dots, Perdita has 68 and each puppy has 32.

I remember reading the book of 101 Dalmatians as a school kid in the 1960s. The Labrador called Perdita "svelte"; it was the first time I'd ever seen an "sv" in a word. There was, as I recall, a MR. De Vil, a little milktoast of a man who caved in to Cruella at every turn. And I too must make a shout-out to Sergeant Tibbs, the most under-appreciated Disney hero! And it's not like the puppies were his buddies -- he'd never seen them before. And his final attempt (before Pongo and Perdita arrived) to protect all the puppies with his spread-out body as the Baduns approach . . . I want to see Tibbs in some new movie. Maybe not a Dalmatians movie -- but something!

I grew up with Dalmatians so this movie was one of my favorites as a kid! So many moments are ingrained in my memories, from the K9 Krunchies song to Lucky and his TV obsession, Rolly always being hungry, and I always found Sargent Tibbs and the Collie to be especially noble. Also that Cruella car chase was so intense to me as a child. It wasn’t until I got older that I noticed Horace pulls the steering wheel off in a final attempt to stop the van. His character is hinted throughout the movie as having reservations about what they’re doing (“I’ve been thinking/I don’t like it, Jasper”). Whether it’s because he doesn’t want to go to jail again or because he has (slightly) more morals and feels disturbed by their job is the question!

I recommend you don't pay attention to the movie "Cruella". In that movie, they humanize the villain and I wish Disney would stop doing that. I don't have a problem with a villain's backstory being explained, but I prefer to it being done in a way where you understand the villain, but at the same time, you still don't like them. For example with the "His Dark Materials" trilogy, Mrs. Coulter who's one of the main villains in that trilogy, as the trilogy goes on, you learn more about her and while you can understand her better, it doesn't excuse anything she's done and you still don't like her I highly recommend watching the live version of "101 Dalmatians" that cane out in 1996. I grew up watching that and this animated version as well and I love both versions!!!!!

True. I enjoyed the"Cruella"movie, but if there's something wrong with it is that _that_ Cruella is simply not the one we got in the cartoon! They should make a"Cruella 2"because as a prequel of"101 Dalmatians"that movie doesn't work *at all!X-P* Also...she wasn't even CRUEL!Her nickname makes *no sense* in that movie, she should have been called _Rebella_ at best!!X-P

A few things on dogs here. Puppies can indeed have trouble breathing when they're born, usually because of fluids still in the lungs. You can rub them like that to stimulate their breathing! The reason that dog looked like Scooby Doo is because they are both Great Danes! Same dog breed!

I loved this episode. Funny fact: when you said all dogs match their owners at the beginning - I always thought of this scene as a joke, but it is actually proven that dogs takes after their owners a lot both in apparition and in character. If you spend some time with an owner of a dog and his/hers pet there might be that thought "what a perfect match" ;P "What a car though" - man through and through hahaha xD If you like movies with dogs, I recommend "Lady and the Tramp" and "Togo".

Yes, there is a Cruella live-action movie that came out, I think, earlier this year. It's suppose to be a prequel to this movie focused more on Cruella herself (as the title suggests), but it's in name only. That Cruella may seem just as crazy as the one in this movie, but it's more like selfish pettiness and far from the unashamed puppy killer she is known for. Can't have female villains be really truly evil anymore.

If you loved this you should totally watch Lady and the Tramp (1955). It's another Disney dog film with beautiful animation and one of the favorites of Walt Disney himself. Its love story and with some quite surprising adult theme snuck into the dialogue. Personally, it's my favorite film made when Walt was alive. Also, some of the dogs during the Twilight Bark scene are actually taken from Lady and the Tramp and used in the film. The scot terrier that barks into the pipe, the bulldog into the window with the puppies, and the cocker spaniel that walks into the street just before the scene goes to see the above city shot.

I'll never get tired of Roger singing Cruella Deville. I remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was a kid. Funny thing is, I forgot how much I like it. 101 Dalmatians tends to get overshadowed by other Disney movies of the time, and Cruella is such a force on her own that she kinda overwhelms other characters as soon as she appears, but I can honestly say there's no character in this movie that I dislike or find annoying. The Movie Cruella is the backstory to Cruella De Vil, How she got so rich, how she met Jasper & Horace, how she got so obsessed with killing Dalmatians! It's a really good movie and i recommend watching it! Edit: And also her and Anita's friendship when they were classmates and before Anita met Roger! We also see why Roger doesn't like Cruella before she gets introduced! Edit2: Note that before the credits an updated "Cruella De Vil" that sounds like the original by Roger and right after that still before the credits there is a hidden scene where they show how Anita and Roger got Pongo and Perdita as puppies!

Cruella's car and The Baduns' truck, were done as white carboard models including springs to make the cars move more realistically, which were photo graphed and Xeroxed to animation cells (even putting Cruella's car in sand to emulate snow). Similiarly, in Pinocchio, Stromboli's wagon and the Coachman's Coach was made as mock-up models, filmed and those cells were used in the film.

I had the original book by Dodie Smith as a kid and it's very good too! Disney stayed very close to it, but it did have some details they left out. Like after getting back to London, the dalmatians "pets" end up buying and renovated the country house where Cruella trapped the puppies, making it a beautiful friendly home. I think that's why Disney had the line with the cows wishing they'd be able to see the puppies again, because they probably are able to visit after the dalmatians move to the country. Also in the book Cruella had a white Persian cat, whose kittens she keeps drowning because they're not purebred. So the cat ends up teaming up with the dalmatians and helping them defeat and bankrupt Cruella by destroying her London-based house. And then the Dalmatians' owners adopt the cat as well.
