Yeah. It is relatable to kids who may have been separated from their parents or if one of their parents was in jail. Not many movies touch on that part. Though also touches on animal cruelty. As much as I love Dumbo, Timothy is probably my favorite character in this movie. He owed Dumbo nothing, hadn’t shared a single word with him, and all he knew was what he had heard from gossip. However, he saw that Dumbo was alone and took it upon himself to be his friend, caretaker, and manager doing whatever he could to get him to the top. Everyone needs a friend like him.

I also thought it was sweet how he looked at Dumbo's ears and instead of laughing at or ostracizing him, he said "I don't see anything wrong with them. I think they're cute." He didn't just befriend Dumbo because he was lonely - he genuinely didn't see any reason for him to be treated so badly.

The pink elephants sequence remains one of the most influential moments in animation. Voice actors Thurl Ravenscroft (who would sing the Grinch song over 25 years later) and Looney Tunes voice actor Mel Blanc all lend their voices to that sequence Which wasn't his first time recording lines for Disney. He had previously voiced Gideon The Cat in Pinocchio, only to have all his lines cut when they made Gideon a mute character.

This was Disney's 4th animated feature. The last one to be completed before WWII. Then they managed to finish Bambi before doing a series of package films to avoid bankruptcy and compensate for the animators who were drafted into the army. To anyone who is unaware of the historical context, these six package films, from "Saludos Amigos," to "The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad," might look out of place if you watch them today.

I watched every one of those packaged films and none of them feel out of place. World War II was a problem for the studio and the US Army occupied the lot for the animators who remained to make propaganda animated films for them and to use as a training ground. This did not sit well with Walt.

"Even though they're old, I find the animation amazing." Kid, the 1940s were Disney Studios at the height of their technique. Zillions of artists making bazillions of hand-painted cels, led by artists who felt limited only by their imaginations in what they could put on the screen. And this film is even more fanciful than the other Disney offerings of that era (while being less 'painterly' than, say, Pinocchio). Don't fall for chronological snobbery.

When I was younger, I actually learned where babies come from from reading about the human body, so I assumed the stork thing was an allegory for adoption, and I thought it was original to _Dumbo_ . Why adoption, you might ask? Well, because the babies didn't come out of their mothers. To quote Vicky Pollard from _Little Britain_ , "It was one of those you where you don't even know you're pregnant till it comes out. They had to sign the paper - it was well graphic!"

The distorted voice of the train engine was done by combining the actual sound of a steam engine’s pistons with the sounds of a microphone placed down a person’s throat while the actor mouthed the words. This technique was later used in the TV series The Twilight Zone to give a sinister voice to an evil slot machine, only there it was combined with the sounds of coins clinking into a jackpot tray.

I never thought of this before, but seeing how high they were gonna make Dumbo jump at the end there 35:45, he definitely wouldn't have survived that. The humans said he was basically "rubber" and didn't have feelings. If Dumbo hadn't learned to fly he would've died right there.

The pink elephants ARE creepy, but I think it serves the purpose of saying "don't drink kids" and also to add shock value to when they learn that Dumbo can fly (instead of him simply flying, it's cooler to have them wake up in a tree all confused)

@@erikperhs_ honestly I think both theories are fine. I really like Dumbo! Sometimes, I find it hard to come back to it because of one thing, the feels! This film is a rollercoaster of emotions to me. You have those moments when we see Dumbo and his mother having their happy times, then those moments with those gossiping elephants are shunning Dumbo, and of course the “Baby Mine” sequence, which destroys me. I do love how Dumbo was able to overcome these obstacles, with the support of Timothy Mouse and become a real icon with his ability to fly using his wing-like ears. Again, I really like this film, truly a feels-worthy and uplifting story. And yes, Dumbo is definitely one of the cutest Disney animals.😊 Thanks a lot for the reaction, Nick!

Pink Elephants are actually a common hallucination with being really drunk. My father used to work in AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) and he would talk with this one guy who was getting treated. He had bad shakes from the withdrawal of not drinking but he would still hallucinate. He would tell my dad about ‘pink elephants’ watching him from the corner of the ceiling. It’s a trippy scene but it’s one of my favorites. Also, I love the accuracy that this movie had with the behavior of elephants. It’s widely known that an identifier of an elephant in any distress will show a repetitive and monotonous motion of head bobbing, weaving, and swaying. Both Dumbo and Mrs. Jumbo are swaying to show their emotional distress at being separated.

Dumbo Facts: this was the fourth animated film the studio made, after Snow White, Pinocchio and Fantasia, but after the failed box office results of Pinocchio and Fantasia and the cut off market because of World War 2 Walt knew they had to make a smaller and less expensive film thus Dumbo and it has one of the shortest runtimes of any Disney feature another way they saved money was the use of watercolor backgrounds something that wouldn’t be seen again until Emperor’s New Groove. Because the film was such a big hit when it came out and raising the spirits of the people during World War 2 Time Magazine was going to have Dumbo on the cover for Mammal of the Year in place of Person of the Year, but then Pearl Harbor happened and so the Japanese General took that place, The film was nominated for Best Original Song for Baby Mine and Best Original Score, it didn’t win either, One factor I want to bring up is the Crows people think they are racist when they are not. First of all the lead crow is not named Jim like many people think and second even though the lead is voiced by Cliff Edwards who voiced Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio the rest are voiced by actual Black Men and after they make fun of him like everyone else and are straightened out by Timothy they realize Dumbo is an outcast just like them and help him as if it wasn’t for them he wouldn’t have had the confidence to fly and they are even happy for him when he is reunited with his mom and the reference choreography for the animators was done by the Nicholas Brothers a famous Black dance duo and even had a black choir for the background vocals, If there is anything that is made a statement of it is during the Roustabouts song with a whole bunch of faceless black men who risk their lives to make sure the circus is set up, When the film was being made the studio was going through an animators strike for better pay and Walt was against it and so in this film the animators are portrayed as clowns saying “Gonna hit the big boss up for a raise”, When Timothy is sneaking into the ringmaster’s room and you see his huge shadow on the wall that is a reference to the silent film Nosferatu and hoe Count Orok’s shadow went on the wall, The voice of the haughty elephant (the one with the purple they had putting in the train car) was Verna Felton this was her first voice for Disney and would go onto hearing her in Cinderella as the Fairy Godmother, Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp, Flora in Sleeping Beauty and her last role you still have to see as Winifred in The Jungle Book, Sterling Holloway also had his first role for Disney in this film as Mr. Stock and would go on to be as the adult voice of Flower in Bambi, you heard his voice also as Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland, and Roquefort the mouse in AristoCats, and a few other films you need to see, So in terms of films from Walt Disney Animation Studios before 2000 you still need to see in order: Fantasia (1940), Saludos Amigos (1943) and Three Caballeros (1944) since Saludos is only a little over 40 minutes you could watch both together as a double feature, Make Mine Music (1946), Fun and Fancy Free (1947), Melody Time (1948), The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949), The Jungle Book (1967), And The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), I didn’t include Rescuers or Rescuers Down Under since Nick will be watching them,

Look, I agree the crows are better than a lot from their time, but having Cliff Edwards doing what he does in that style based on racist stereotypes does still make it ultimately racist charicatures at least as far as he's concerned. And I *like* the crows for the reasons you said narratively, but to pretend there's no racism there is to contribute to its further pervasiveness whether you mean to or not.
@majkus
@majkus 2 жыл бұрын
Let's eschew the loaded word 'racist'. The crows certainly play to racial stereotypes: dialect, hue, cigar, dress, and apparent shiftlessness (unlike the hardworking roustabouts). And in 1940, this was practically the only way either white or black people saw black people on the screen, which was harmful to both groups, in different ways. Sure, the 'coons' and minstrel-show blackface of the previous generation was almost gone (Bugs Bunny still invoked the minstrel-show image a couple of times, regrettably), but things still had a long way to go. The problem, as always, is how to view these things today, and it is a huge and often complex and nuanced subject. And of course, it depends on the audience. One should be careful letting a young child see it; they might not even notice that it is a racial stereotype; but they might also think that the crows are somehow a 'portrayal' of black people. Conversation might be necessary. When I was a kid, I was surprised that my parents thought I might take Bre'r Rabbit and Bre'r Fox as racial stereotypes, especially the 'tar baby' element. It honestly had not occurred to me that these were (some portrayal of) black characters. But then, my exposure to the Harris characters was through a Disney picture book that (I think) eschewed the Uncle Remus frame; I had never seen Song of the South. The moral of the story is, you never know. And of course the same applies to books, antiques, and any number of other things that we run across that recall those days of eye-rollin' lazy watermelon-eating colored characters (like the character 'Snowball' in the 1925 silent Wizard of Oz, played by Spencer Bell but credited to 'G. Howe Black'). Wince; and move on.

It‘s actually incredibly common for a circus to put up their own tent in every new town they get to. At least it’s like this where I’m from. And when they are done, they take everything with them to the next town. I couldn’t think of a circus, that has a tent that stays at the same place (or one that travels to already built tents), as it would be a lot harder to earn money, when you’re always in the same town. Plus they show the same show in every town ( often it only changes once a year). They do the training mostly before they even start their journey. Of course they’d keep training and maybe sometimes switch some things around, I could imagine.

Here in Germany it is similar. There is one local circus that does not move I know of. It is Circus Krone in Munich. Like, it’s Toothfairy levels of folk figures told to children at some point. I truly cannot love watching people’s reactions to anything more than I love watching this man experience things that are so common to me for the first time. Also, what makes this movie even sadder, now that I'm an adult, is that knowing Dumbo never made it past the alcoholic water drinking scene. That basically killed him. He was separated from his mom for days, and baby elephants at that age need their mother's milk. They can't digest solids properly yet at that age. So by the time he drank that water he was on the verge of death. Everything we saw after that was a fever dream and his final moments.

An animation instructor recently said that the Pink Elephants sequence was added to stretch out the running length to 70 minutes, which is the length that a film must be to be consider a Feature Length Film. It was given to a single animator, who was told to let his imagination run wild. This is why you have so much surrealism in the sequence, which was unheard of in an animated film at the time.

Back when VHS was a thing, it was common for Disney to bundle an animated short onto their tapes of the feature films - however, when _Dumbo_ was released on VHS, it had *three* shorts play after the movie: one about Noah's Ark, a sequel to their _Three Little Pigs_ short, and one about three kittens that mess up some poor lady's house. That's how much room the tape had to spare, this movie's that short.

Always reminds me of a murderous Mary. Mary (c. 1894-September 13, 1916), also known as "Murderous Mary",[1] was a five-ton Asian elephant[2] who performed in the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. After killing a keeper on his second day at work, in Kingsport, Tennessee, in 1916, she was hanged in nearby Erwin. She had a bad tooth infection, that they didn't know but still shouldn't be hitting them like he or most of them did all the time. The details of the aftermath are confused in a maze of sensationalist newspaper stories and folklore. Most accounts indicate that she calmed down afterwards and did not charge the onlookers, who began chanting "Kill the elephant! Let's kill it." Within minutes, local blacksmith Hench Cox tried to kill Mary, firing five rounds with little effect.[3] Meanwhile, the leaders of several nearby towns threatened not to allow the circus to visit if Mary was included. The circus owner, Charlie Sparks, reluctantly decided that the only way to quickly resolve the potentially ruinous situation was to kill the wounded elephant in public. On the following day, a foggy and rainy September 13, 1916, Mary was transported by rail to Unicoi County, Tennessee, where a crowd of over 2,500 people (including most of the town's children) assembled in the Clinchfield Railroad yard. The elephant was hanged by the neck from a railcar-mounted industrial derrick between four o'clock and five o'clock that afternoon.[5] The first attempt resulted in a snapped chain, causing Mary to fall and break her hip as dozens of children fled in terror. The severely wounded elephant died during a second attempt and was buried beside the tracks. A veterinarian examined Mary after the hanging and determined that she had a severely infected tooth in the precise spot where Red Eldridge had prodded her. I my self would rather have dead circus workers than ever having that happen again. Never support animal acts where ''people'' get payed to make an animal perform.

I remember being very connected to the Lullaby Baby Mine and hearing it as an adult makes me cry so much because it reminded me of how much my Mother would sing it to me as a child, which makes me more sadder because I don’t have a not so good relationship with her now (we still see eachother but it’s now different) and every time I was sad I would always hum the Lullaby

Dumbo is the shortest Disney movie ever, I think, unless it's longer than Saludos Amigos. Fun fact about the crows: The movie was made in 1941, and the crows were specifically designed to be stereotypical African-Americans. All but the lead crow were played by black actors. The one thing that really kills me is that the lead crow was called Jim. For anyone who doesn't know, Jim Crow was what segregation laws were called. They were still in place at the time of the movie, when a black person could be prosecuted for drinking at a white person's fountain. They used to call it "separate but equal", but somehow I just know they were making that up. The crows without the stigma are harmless and they're actually among the good guys of the movie, but I think they're actually more harmless now that we live in an integrated society than they were back when they were invented.
