17:33 Game Summary
The series on instructive chess classics continues with a beautiful game of Alekhine! The idea is to show those games of the world champions against lower-rated players, where ideas are clearly demonstrated in instructive fashion. The problem with modern games between equally strong players is that they are too chaotic and subtle. Extracting the right lessons is not so easy from those games.
In this game, Alekhine is playing against William Winter, a two-time British champion. White chooses the Exchange Variation of the French Defense, an opening many French players dread. Alekhine gives them hope, by creating an early imbalance and deciding to castle long. Then he starts coordinating his pieces extremely beautifully, even forming the "Alekhine's Gun"! The game shows several strategic insights, e.g. dominating the only open file, creating strong squares for our pieces, and even activating the worst-placed piece in a seemingly impossible way. Alekhine was a genius regarding piece activity, and this game clearly shows it.
Please give me your thoughts on this game by commenting on this video. What were the main lessons you extracted from this game?

Great Video, great game, and a great lesson! I stopped the video at 4:23 when White went to f4 with the pawn making the bishop crying. Here I thought White's idéa was to play f5 in the next move. It is impossible to stop this move if I don't play the ugly ..f5, giving white a nice outpost square for a knight on e5. Here, I assumed for a moment that it was White's move and I calculated: 1.f5 gxf5 2.Nxf5 Qf6 Rhf1 and I think white is better, because the isolated pawn f7 is weak and White's pieces are more active, and if 2..Nxf5 3.Qxf5+ Kb8 4.Qxf7 winning a pawn with what I think is a better position. But maybe, I thought, I could sacrifice the pawn under better circumstances if Qxf5 isn't a check in the preceeding variation; if the king would be on b8, I have an extra move that might turn the tables on White. This is what I calculated: 1..Kb8 2.f5 gxf5 3.Nxf5 Nxf5 4.Qxf5 Ne7 5.Qxf7 Rdf8 6.Qe6 (6.Qg7 isn't possible due to 6..Nf5 forking the queen and the bishop) Rf6 7.Qh3 Qxh3 8.gxh3 Re6. If 9.Rd3, then 9..Nf5 10.Kd2 Rhe8 wins, but 9.Kd2 Nf5 10.Bf2 is probably just equal even though White is up a pawn since it is the isolated double pawn on h3. If white plays 7.Qd7 instead of 7.Qh3, the position is lost after 7..Qe4 8.Kd2 Re6 so White has to be careful. Comparing this with the position after 1..Qg4 2.h3 Qd7 3.f5, which I didn't saw and you said was closed to equal, I prefer Alekhine's solution because my move simplifies the position so much that there is no winning chances anymore. What I think i learned today is that asking the question of how to improve my worst placed is very a powerful approach to find the best move in the position compared to just calculating variations, and also how easy it is to get lifeless positions in the Exchange French exemplified by my move ..Kb8 compared to Alekhine's ..Qg4. I have played it as Black suffering a multitude of draws against much less rated opponents, which is very boring. Maybe I'll take up French again when I've learned to improve my worst placed piece in the spirit of Alekhine!

I love this response. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, backed up by concrete variations! Great comparison of your line with Alekhine's! And I love the main lesson you took from this game. Master asks "What needs to be done?" before "How I can achieve it?". Alekhine really wanted to improve his worst placed piece (the c6-knight). And he found ways to achieve this goal in a very instructive way. There is much more structure to this thinking than looking at checks captures threats on each turn.

Doctor, I have been studying your Art of Piece Exchange on chessable. I learnt a lot of new ideas and I am already 1900 fide. I realised I now have more ways of playing the game and will make less strategic blunders. But how does one increase his rating to 2200 level? I cannot afford a coach but do tactics and even calculation excercises.

Thank you so much for studying my course! I am investigating this question on my rating climb series. I will soon have more insights on it. One big area seems to be the conversion skills. Another one is obviously calculation - but it is multifaceted and you need to know which area of calculation you are failing the most (is it not genereating enough candidates, poor goal-setting, or missing the opponent's resources?). Another area is obviously deeper opening prep and understanding of the middlegames, even typical endgames from your openings. That becomes more important for that level.

Hello! Here are the answers: 1) Smyslov for his amazing intuition for piece harmony 2) 2193 FIDE 3) I created a Chessable course on tackling this issue. It is called "Fundamental Chess Calculation Skills". It is suited for your level. 4) I am a Sicilian player so it is Sicilian. You cannot compare it directly to Italian as it is a White opening.
