The best part about Shan-Yu as a character comes at the moment Mulan reveals she was the one that took out his army. He doesn't doubt what she says, he doesn't scoff at the idea of a woman being the one to take him out; he refers to her as "the soldier from the mountain". Mongolian women weren't as looked down on as Chinese women at the time, and many even held positions in military and politics. To Shan-Yu, Mulan was just another soldier, and he treated her as such.

Super Girl I agree! Mulan was never selfish, which is why I really love her character. Mulan was raised to always bring her family honor, and this helped forge her resolve while she was within the army. Her father said "I will die doing what's right!" Mulan took that to heart.

Yes and no. Her "official" motivation is to save her father, and of course that's a huge part of it, but she also wants to prove herself and bring honor to her family in some way since she wasn't able to do it in the way society expected her to. The ironic and beautiful thing of it all is that in the end, when she brings honor to her family in the most literal way (Shan Yu's sword and the Emperor's crest)... her father immediately tosses it all away to hug her, proving that "honor" is meaningless and all he ever wanted is for his daughter to be okay.
@PhoenixL0vee
@PhoenixL0vee 3 жыл бұрын
You’re not entirely right, as Miru above me said. Mulan can’t fit into what society and her family expects of her - to be an obedient wife and give birth to baby boys, that’s what reflection is all about. She wants to feel she has a worth, that she is her own person with dreams and needs. So when her father must go serve his country she decides to take his place. On the surface it seems that the only reason she is doing this is to save her old man, but that’s not true at all. In the scene after she was exposed as a woman, in the snow she says “Maybe I didn’t go for my father. Maybe what I really wanted was to prove I could do things right. So when I looked in the mirror I’d see someone worthwhile. But I was wrong. I see nothing.” So maybe it wasn’t her dream to specifically be a warrior, but through being a warrior she tried to prove herself she is worthwhile, that she is more than what society makes her to be.

The songs in Mulan have a different purpose than in most Disney films. There are only 4 and they all belong to the "juvenile" part of the movie where Mulan is growing and learning new skills. Notice that "Girl Worth Fighting For" cuts off right at the point where the characters and we, the audience, stop messing around and take things seriously. No more time for singing, the real adult life begins. P. S. Whenever someone says "let's get down to business", I can't help but quietly add "to defeat the Huns!"

@@VelkanAngels Mulan may not be royalty, but she is one of the 12 princesses listen on the official Disney Princess list. Disney has specific criteria that makes a female protagonist a princess and title is only one. Mulan made the criteria they set and they had her official Disney World coronation. @@VelkanAngels Being a princess isn't necessarily a bad thing. If anything, it tells people a princess can be many things! You can be a warrior or a bookworm, luxurious or humble, etc. Disney picks the princesses based on how successful her movie is, I think. Mulan, Jasmine, and Pocahontas were probably made princesses to increase diversity. The brand was officially made in 2001. I love all of them, though I wouldn't have minded if Disney had included Meg and Esmerelda. I'd add Kida, too, but she was made during Disney's post-renaissance, pre-revival era, so that's unlikely. I wish Disney could've made the Disney prince line prominent, too.

Believe it or not, when this movie came out, it got mixed reviews. Critics felt it wasn't nearly as good as other 90s Disney movies and some even said the songs weren't memorable. Some even called it an anti feminist movie because of the "be a man" song. But honestly this has got to be one of the greatest Disney movies. And compared to other 90s Disney movies, I think it's aged much better. Particularly for millennials, the idea of feeling lost and looking for acceptance from your family and society, really hits home.

It is hard to appreciate the Disney version when you know what really happened to Pocahontas. Her story is truly tragic. The 'facts' we learned in school don't tell you about how the English murderered her husband, separated her from her newborn, tortured her in to adopting Christianity and sailing to England, and forced her into marriage when she was found to be pregnant from rape. Oh and she was never romantically involved with John Smith, she was only about 11 or 12 around the time he would have been in Jamestown.

I saw someone make the observation the other day that while the men were singing the song A Girl Worth Fighting For they were still behaving like boys because war was not real to them yet. All they were thinking about was going home like war heroes and being selfish. They are abruptly met with the realization of why they are fighting and the real "girl worth fighting for" was the little girl that the doll belonged to and others like her. Choked me up just reading it but seeing this scene for the first time with that in mind just added another layer to this movie. They got a lot wrong when it came to the real Ballad of Hua Mulan and how they treated the cultures of the Chinese and Hun, but they didn't hold back on the emotional depth.

Not only that, Shan Yu wasn't just extremely strong, he was also smart. As TV Tropes pointed out, his military strategy was brilliant. He and his men breached the Great Wall, and then he sent a messenger back to China with news of his attack, which would force the Emperor to send all his forces against him. And instead of bypassing the Chinese armies, he fought them head-on, in favorable terrain. Instead of those armies potentially coming back to attack if he reached the capital, he could destroy them right then and there and thus his path toward the Emperor would be clear.

Believe it or not, only one hundred years ago, meet any Chinese woman over twenty and chances are she'd have bound feet. Mulan was before the time of foot binding, thank heavens, but that was another way women had to conform - they had to have their toes broken and have cloth wrapped around them until they were unable to heal so that they looked like they had tiny feet. This practice started becoming less and less common until only a few rural places did it in the 1950s, but it was done for a whole millennium - so many Chinese women were crippled deliberately for a thousand years.

She never lost, and later because a general, favored by her father over 11 brothers, and even his choice to take the throne. It saddens me that she isn't more famous.

@ Sausage Man There is a theory that the Huns were at some point descended from the Xiongnu, but there is no conclusive evidence for that right now. The Huns referred to in modern history spent most of their time terrorizing the Roman empire, and never fought china. The people that Mulan would have most likely fought are the mongols. Not to mention the character design definitely points to them being Mongols, even the horses look like modern Mongolian horses. Also mushu says "Now that's what I call Mongolian barbecue" when he burns the feathers off Shanyu's falcon.

Mulan was always my favourite Disney movie. Even when I was a little girl I really liked that Mulan wasn't the typical helpless disney princess but that she actually defied all expectations/rules and went to war herself. Even better, she didn't really need the "prince" - he needed her in the end! My other two favourites were Princess and the Frog and Tangled. Even though the latter is the exact opposite of Mulan, I really enjoyed the humour in it.

One thing I really like about this movie, and about Shan Yu himself, is that while everyone else looks down on Mulan for being a woman, and being a woman masquerading as a soldier, the first thing Shan Yu says when he sees Mulan isn't a comment about her being a woman; he acknowledges her as "the soldier from the mountains". Apparently, in Hun culture, women were just as great warriors as men, and fought alongside them. So, to Shan Yu, it's not strange to see Mulan as a soldier; he's just pissed that she's the one who nearly killed him and his army. Usually it's the love interest, or even best friend, who goes against the norm for the main protagonist right at the start; but in this case, it's the villain. Also, Shang's English singing voice is Donnie Osmond, one of my mom's favorite singers :3

About the lack of the father through the film: At the beginning, they have a great relationship, he tells her to go at her own pace and she’ll get here eventually, and they have that beautiful moment under the cherry blossom tree But then the conscription happens And this tears a seam of their relationship And the last time they speak, is a fight driven highly by emotion (Mulan sits in the rain, clearly upset at the rift torn in their relationship, and decides she must take his place, so that she can do as he said and bring honour, and “find her place”) After this Mulan leaves (We see the father try to chase her but he falls down calling her name, and is forced to let her go. Mulan of course doesn’t see this, but this is where we see his regret that their last moment was a fight) This creates actual stakes in the movie, not only does Mulan have to survive but she also has to get back home and reconcile with her father She believes the only way for them to reconcile is for her to being honour back home, yet when she does that, he throws it away and hugs her This resolves the main emotional journey through the story as well as resolving the relationship between the characters I think it is important we don’t see him when she is away, because he is constantly in the back of the audience’s mind, just as with Mulan’s Which creates the emotional suspense of the movie, “what is he doing?” “How is he feeling?” “How will he react to her when she returns?” etc. Seeing him throughout the movie would’ve also made their reunion less impactful As Mulan returns we see her father under the same tree from the beginning, this time shrunken down instead of sitting tall, and this time all the blossoms have bloomed symbolising Mulan’s journey is complete and she has become the person she dreamed of and her father hoped for Their first beautiful emotional moment under that tree establishing their connection, with the last resolving the rift and solidifying their bond

Something fun to realize about the great stone dragon, it's absent from its stone form because it was already within Mulan's spirit. Also, some historical context, the Huns were far more egalitarian and allowed women to take on more roles than just wives and mothers. This is why Shan Yu, realizing Mulan was the soldier who set off the avalanche, could care less if she was a woman or not.

I love that Mulan fails at the typically feminine traits and expectations and later the masculine. However, she does eventually become successful at stereotypically masculine traits, but she also earns respect first and distinguishes herself by retrieving the arrow-- a task that all the men failed at because they were using brute force tactics, she was successful because used a different tactic that isn't necessarily masculine (she looks at the problem differently than using brute force). One of the major themes beyond family/honor is that gender doesn't matter or define a person's greatness or ability to achieve. It lends greater importance to Mulan's self discovery "reflection" and realization that adhering to those traditional gender norms does not define a person. I would also like to add that later the men follow Mulan's tactics by dressing as women, calling back to her tactics in the retrieval of the arrow and their willingness to try something beyond brute force.

@@seeing8spots That's honestly the least of my concerns. My bigger issue is with blatant misinformation re: horses in general. For instance, Spirit would NOT have stayed in the herd he was born in; he would have been kicked out when he reached puberty (to avoid inbreeding, as he would otherwise have tried to mate with his mother and full/half sisters in the herd). Little Creek's training methods are questionable: tying two horses together and letting them loose is extremely unsafe (especially with the rope around their necks like that; realistically they could have wound up strangled). And on and on. And kids watch that and assume (since this movie essentially claims to be historical fiction) that this is accurate. And then should they decide to start riding, their instructors have to set them straight on just about everything. (I taught horseback riding for two summers and my fellow instructors and I cursed that movie for making our jobs harder.)

Fun fact: There's a live action movie made by China themselves that is more historically accurate to the ballad the cartoon was based off of, and I believe it's equally as good mainly because of the historical accuracy and the different tone it offers.
