Huh. My mom and I watched "Klaus" this week and she was commenting on how the animation of Jesper's nose looked kind of like Dr. Delbert's nose, and I noticed that Mogens' design looked like Captain Longjohn Silver from "Treasure Planet." My opinion is that the Krum lady looks like Yzma, and the Ellingboe leader looks like the mayor from "Nightmare Before Christmas."

@PixarShark

While it's not the most accurate backstory of Santa Claus, I love this one to bits. As well as what the ending doesn't really fully explain. The name Santa Claus can roughly translate to "Saint Klaus". And in Catholicism, you don't earn the title of "Saint" until death. Which it implies is indeed what happened to Klaus at the end. But that also means that he got to reunite with his wife, seemingly became "immortal", and is still carrying out his good work to this day. 💖 Awesome.
@TheTenguwarrior
@TheTenguwarrior Жыл бұрын
Well I think we will never see a better "backstory" for Santa Claus. Being accurate is impossible with such an figure. Santa Claus as a figure unites many different elements of culture, myth and religion. For one in the modern american depiction is strong influence of coca cola marketing. Then Santa Claus himself is based on the european "Nikolaus" who originally comes around the 6th of december. The european Nikolaus of course himself is than a wild combination Saint Nicholas of Myra but at the same times shares elements and attributes of pagan deitys and myths. For example the norse god Odin as hooded wanderer that brings gift to Yule, the pagan festivity that was absorbed into Christmas.

I think it doesn't have to be an accurate depiction at all. It's still beautifully depicted, and sure Santa Claus has his origins. This is Klaus. An alternate story, inherently different. Absolutely gorgeous

Oh man, I love Klaus! At first I thought it was another 3D animation, but I was so elated to discover that in was 2D animated, just with digital lighting and shading FX’s! I love this original concept of the legend of Santa Claus. The story is fresh, mostly unpredictable and it’s got a lot of heart and soul put into it. The characters are lot of fun (my favorites being Klaus and Margū) and the emotion of the film is beautiful, enough to get me in the feels. This film became one of my top favorite Christmas stories on day one and I still come back to it every Christmas season! Thanks SO much for covering this film, Nick!

Don’t you think Jesper looks a lot like Kuzco from the Emperor’s New Groove ? I think he does, especially with his sassy attitude and his arc about learning how not to be self centred and more respectful towards others. Even his friendship with Klaus got some Kuzco and Pacha vibes.

For me it’s Mogen (aka boat man whose job is the outgoing mail)- because he has the most wit and sarcasm, but as Llama Kuzco not Empire Kuzco. Especially since he has the same facial expressions and mannerisms! Example: when he’s drinking beer with his feet up when Jesper is wondering why no one has letters, and says “oh folks around here only have one thing to say with each other *sips* and they’re doing that just fine without mail” he has the same squinty smile as Llama Kuzco.

@@annafowdy I didn’t know the SNL bit or that MacDonald died :( RIP. I do know that Sergio was a supervising Disney animator so he was there and knew of Emperors New Groove and saw some art work even if he didn’t lay a hand on that project. Even when on first watch, Mogens reminded me so much of Llama Kuzco specifically even on scenes where he had no lines. I checked the frames side by side down to the animation and they had the same facial expressions and mannerisms. MacDonald really did nail the sarcastic voice acting and the fact he worked with David Spade makes his performance in this even better and more special :) I love both movies and now that I know he passed, I kinda wished we got a mini Mogens and Kuzco episode of them trying to outwit each other as tribute 😩♥️

Sometimes the ones that stick the most with you are the slow burn plotlines. Definitely love it when I go from despising to adoring a character because of the arc they go through. I watch this movie at least 70 times- I’m not exaggerating I watched it an hour ago and now I’m watching this and will prolly watch it again in another 2 hours when I wrap presents- and everytime I do, my reaction stays the same like the first time I’ve ever watched it. Screaming “SAPURREE!” And “INVISIBILLLLLL” has become an inside joke in the family. I’m so glad Nick has watched it. I’m still pissed it lost to the abomination known as Toy Story 4, because this movie is a masterpiece and truly deserves more acknowledgement, enjoyment, appreciation, and love ❤️

This is something that I believe will become the kind of Christmas classic that we show our kids and then they show their kids someday. Something of interest regarding Margu - the filmmakers wanted to show the actual Saami people, so they actually found a Saami girl to voice the character and speak her lines in Saami.

In this movie, it seems that Christmas and the decorations with it have been a thing for a while before Santa and the legend Klaus and Jesper inspired. That's why they decorated that way: because Christmas was already a holiday before then. It was already a religious celebration and Jesper's plan to deliver one night a year on Christmas added Santa. Presents, in the movie, may have been a thing before Klaus anyway in reference to the gifts given by the three wise men/ the three kings on the night of the first Christmas. Idk I just really love this movie and have watched it every year since it came out. I've had alot of time to think about it.

I love how, like you said, the atmosphere for how dreary and menacing the place is and all the people. Even Klaus! But then the color starts to come in and life steadily returns to the world. It's just beautiful ❤️ Also it's subtle, but if you've ever seen the claymation classic Santa Clause is Coming to Town, there are so many references to it. Like it's another Santa origin story but it's a silly upbeat magical take you would expect from a kid's movie. As told by the Postman as the narrator, so it feels like that one is what Jesper would tell people and this is the "what really happened" take on it 😂

I absolutely love the technical side of this animation as well! The studio's put out a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff on things like how the director went to visit the sami people and find a voice actress for Margu, or how the technical side of the animation was done (it's essentially 2D using 3D shading techniques that let it get away with this gorgeaous concept art level of detail) or various parts of the character design process. I really recommend checking them out.

My favourite part of the movie is that they included Sami people (my people). Before recent years, being Sami was seen as shameful in Norway because of how the Norwegian government treated us. They basically tried to get rid of both the language and culture. Because of this we almost lost our Sami identity, only about 25 000 people speak the language today, but thankfully it’s gotten better and better in recent years. That’s exactly why this movie is so important Also, she’s colourful because she’s wearing our traditional clothing called “gákti”, it comes in different colours and styles depending on where you/your family are from!

Since you did make a comment about how, "Since this was a Netflix Movie, I didn't expect the animation to rival Disney or Pixar," a few things should probably be mentioned: 1) When this was made, Netflix didn't have an animation department to their company. Any animated production was only made in partnership with Netflix (who tends to act as producers for projects half of the time) as Netflix would end up becoming a platform creators and companies could use to showcase their work (and this is still a thing even though Netflix is making its own animated works). This is the case for "Klaus" as SPA Studios (not Netflix) are the ones responsible for this movie. 2) SPA Studios is based in Madrid, Spain, and was founded by Sergio Pablos, a Spanish writer, director, producer, and animator (SPA itself stands for Sergio Pablos Animation). Sergio actually did work for Disney as he was an animator in films like Hunchback, Hercules, Tarzan, and was the character artist for Dr. Doppler in Treasure Planet. The Head of SPA Studios, Marisa Román, was also once a Disney animator and dedicated her talents to films like Mulan, A Bug's Life, and Tarzan as well. 3) Along with Klaus, SPA Studios is also responsible for other films such as Rio (for Blue Sky), Smallfoot (for Warner Brothers), and a little film you might know called Despicable Me (for Illumination).

A lot of Christmas cards are being sent as well as packages, and of course letters for Santa in Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland. There goes letters from kids all over the world. We actually have a Christmas Village there. X3 It's nowadays the only time we are being asked to do overtime and earn a bit more money. The Finnish word for Christmas has nothing to do with religion really. We call it Joulu (Yolooh), kinda like the word Yule, which is an old Germanic celebration, before the religion took over. Yule was and stll is, a celebration of midwinter for wiccas and heathen people. X3

There are a lot of similarities between this and Santa Claus is Comin' Town. Both are origin stories. Jesper and Klaus become very close friends. Kluger has an encyclopedic knowledge of Santa and implies a relationship exists between Santa and postmen like him. Both take place sometime in the 19th or early 20th century. Smeerensburg is based on Sweden and Sombertoen is based on the German Empire. Both Smeerensburg and Sombertown are miserable towns ran by assholes and have a distinctive grayness to them. Both towns gradually improve due to Santa's influence. In both movies the main protagonist's love interest is a teacher who at first is not receptive of him.

The little girl speaking saami is from the native folk of Scandinavia. Sápmi is the only native people in Europe that survived the ages and they were already living during ice age. They live now in the north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and a little part of Russia and there is something like ten different languages with Nordsamiska being the main one. I think the little girl speaks nordsamiska from what i can understand but I can’t be sure. It’s important to know that Sápmi were brutalized and discriminated during the last centuries, like very badly, for exemple the government of Norway during the 20e century sterilized sápmi women so they couldn’t « reproduce », while children were taken from their families and send in Norwegian home where they were forbidden to use their languages. When this came to an end, they were reunited with their families but then they had no way to interact with them because they had forgotten their native languages, or even if they didn’t they were raised far from their cultures and couldn’t really be part of it again because it’s very difficult to reintroduce themselves into their old lives (when they could remember it since some of them were taken at birth). For a long time it was very difficult to be sápmi and now, even if things tend to get better, it’s still not perfect. I guess we can compare what sápmi experienced to what Native American went through. I think this movie (as Frozen II who broach the subject but as a metaphor, when here it’s literal) did a great job. It’s subtle but the little girl is very put aside for half of the movie, the children can’t speak with her and don’t try, no one is playing with her or paying attention, even if she’s the cutest. And I love that she’s getting that attention in the end. The robe she’s wearing is called a gákti and is the traditional clothing for most of sápmi people. And as I said, she’s definitely speaking sápmi because I could understand half of what she was saying, and I think her accent was great (I can’t really tell for this part but her accent look like my teacher’s so I guess it’s a proper one). I didn’t check but I hope they had take a native sápmi speaker for her. I’m just so happy they bring sápmi culture in this movie, I think it was very nice and well done. PS : I’m not sápmi myself but I really love their culture and I’m glad for them that they began to have the recognition they deserve. If any sápmi want to had something or correct something I said, feel free !
