This movie is how I knew I could never be a social worker because I would be social worker by day and Dexter Morgan by night😒

This is a black American horror story. I was tricked into going to the theatre to watch this and left traumatized

That clip where she shoved that girl after her mother was abusing her was a depiction of how abuse can affect how we treat others. I had to analyze my past and how it was affecting those around me, because when the stress of the pandemic hit, I started to treat my little brother EXACTLY the way my mother treated me.

Mo'Nique's character was broken. And in turn, she tried to do the same to Precious. But, Precious had the right people surrounding her finally to help her see that she deserved better than what she had.

For colored girls is a very powerful movie, a hard watch, but, once you dry your eyes, it leaves you feeling a sense of unity.

My thing is during her mom’s breakdown at the end where she kept saying she didn’t want her boyfriend to hurt precious…he wasn’t the only one sexually abusing her. We see earlier in the movie that she use to make precious take care of her sexually too.

I was homeless when I was 16-17 and for two years while I was trying to survive, starving, and sleeping on someone's floor, eating scraps, my mom had been cashing in food stamps in my name, saying I still lived with her. I didn't realize this until I was 18, and when I wanted to use my own food stamps, she refused to give me any of my social security info. In the end, I made it out. But I have nothing to do with my mom. Parents like this are ALL too real. All my childhood my mom told me that I needed to take care of her. This movie resonated with me.

THE PERSONALITY SWITCH UP WAS JUST LIKE MY MOMMA TOO. This mother is the perfect depiction of a narcissist.

Her daughter's name is also a bit of cruelty and/or ignorance. It's not actually a name- Mongol or Mongoloid is an old fashioned way to refer to people with Down Syndrome because of their facial features which is now considered highly offensive.

Those anxious flashbacks to childhood trauma, your abuser’s voice echoing in your head… This movie got a LOT very accurate.

My mother in law treated my husband like this because he was gay.. he ended up getting accepted to a boarding school in Baltimore at 16 and getting away.

The beatings and then acting nice is called “co-dependent amnesia.” My mother would do it all the time. It makes you feel crazy. Like the savage abuse is normal, or like it didn’t even happen.

Mariah Carey did great in her role as the social worker

“Push” and “A Child Called It” are two stories I read as a child that I can never get over. It made me realize how sick some parents are and made me appreciate mines.

If you're looking to watch another movie that doesn't get enough love is Akeelah and the Bee. Keke Palmer, Angela Bassett, and Lawrence Fishburne ate their roles up in that film.

There is a sequel to the book called “the kid” it’s about her son sadly he witness her passing away from HIV. It’s also hinted that Mary was also let down by her own mother which is why she treated precious like that but precious refused to fall into that cycle. Unfortunately her son ended up being let down by adults around him

Precious' mother was absolutely horrid in this. She legit tried to kill her grandkid and kid with a television over a balcony. That's just too much man.

I heard the book is even more sad

This movie definitely goes hard on the family and generational trauma. Sometimes I feel really bad for the mom, she must have gone thru some tough stuff growing up...like imagine what she must have gone thru to think the things she did in this film as her character. Monique did amazing as did Gabourey.

This movie depicts the cycle of abuse so well. Precious’ mother clearly had some abuse during her childhood at some point which lead to her thinking the abuse she inflicted on precious was okay. But it also shows how when someone gets the right people around them and the right support they can escape that cycle for their own kids

In the book this is based on, Push, it's said that after Mongo was born, (when Precious was 12, ew) the nurse called her a mongoloid because she had a flat face and slanted eyes because of her down syndrome. So Precious named her "Mongoloid Down Cinder") or Mongo for short.

when this movie came out it was quite controversy some liked it while others didnt, people like dr boyce watkins called the director sick and mentally ill for making the movie and others claim it was anti black because its part of hollywood enforcing negative stoies and roles. Whatever it was it was well made and acted.

It’s not the teachers wanting to just pass these students that clearly need more help, it’s that the system and even parents make it so hard for teachers to hold these kids back and give them the extra time and resources required if the parents are not on board. It all started with No Child Left Behind, which ironically has made things within the education system worse. I’m currently a student teacher and one of my students is in 3rd Grade with a Kindergarten reading level. Her mom was contacted and offered support for her daughter and declined because “she got a second opinion” and thinks her daughter is fine.

This one of those films I watched once and only once.

As someone who actually dropped out of high school and made something of myself I can feel Precious’ struggles and challenges that she has in her life life even though I didn’t have to deal with any problems that Precious went through I can still feel her struggles and I sympathize with her

I can see why she wanted a light skin boyfriend if he abusive father was a dark skin man! There’s layers to this! As someone who had an abusive white father idk what it is but I just can’t even look at a white man bro. Don’t worry I’m grown healthy did therapy all good but it make sense

Fun Fact: Mo’Nique was actually sexually abused by her brother so playing the role as an abuser was probably very mentally hard on her and after the scene of her being mean to Precious’ daughter with down syndrome she cried because she felt so bad.

I love that you laughed in the big confession scene with Monique when she gets precious birthday wrong-takes a moment-regroups and pivots to "my scorpio child-" it is an incredible moment of acting from Monique. one sees the way she works-so clearly. and it is terrifying, insane, and ridiculous all at once. it makes me laugh every time. it is just so who that woman is. i remember thinking-no-she didn't just say that did she? that is her out? that is the next card she is going to play? wow. wow. wow. an incredible film. all the acting is so off the charts. and Mariah???? Mariah?? mustache! speaking in the dead center of a vocal fry the entire time. so am I now to understand Mariah has THAT VOICE-"visions of love" "emotions" "can't let go" "fantasy" just to name a few favorites. and then Mariah-when you stop singing, you can act like this? you are so true and real and un-fancy in your acting-that you are literally unrecognizable to me. incredible. Carl was off with his wife and kids. Yeah, Mary was his side piece. Toosey is Mary's mother. The book is very poetic prose. It starts with Precious' journal and she's barely literate, and it gets better as she progresses.

The only thing that bothers me had to do with Oscar season. Gabourey Sidibe CLEARLY deserved the Best Actress Award but it was given to Sandra Bullock for the "feel good" The Blind Side plus she had more people voting for her since she had been in the industry longer and she was due. There was a sequel book by Sapphire which it would be interesting to film. Glad this was made though!

Have you seen Crooklyn? The main character is a little girl.

2:31- It makes sense why Precious has very vivid fantasies and imaginations like that. It's her way of escaping from the reality she's stuck in. Cinderella had the same thing and idiots mock her by calling her weak. It drives me crazy. 5:25- This is one of those films you see once, maybe twice because it's kind of sad. I thank God I've never been sexually abused and hope it never happens although to the ones it happened to I pray they ask Jesus to be healed from that pain. 9:23- I'm not a therapist, so it would be difficult explaining rationality to an illogical narcissist. Psychologists must loooove have abusive mothers like this as a client.(Not really that's sarcasm) 9:39- Shout out to Monique for playing this character. She did great. I like seeing actors step outside the box and play a character that is the opposite of who they are as a person show their talent by channeling it in a unique way. 12:41- Dead. Her dad is dead. 25:36- I read a comment that this scene was hard for Monique to do. She actually broke down crying and apologized to that little girl's mother. Poor Monique. Even Danny Glover had a moment like that when he played Albert in Color Purple.

When I confided in classmates about certain things, they just saw me as a weirdo because of it. Like they were just freaked out by the fact that I had a parent in prison, and some of the other things that I told them. They were like you need help she’s weird, that’s why I acted a certain way in school because I was depressed and angry and traumatized and why I got picked on so much because I was an easy target and I tried to stand up for myself my comeback sucked. Because I just never had it in me. I got told nobody likes you when at multiple places. Including home. Me & Precious probably would’ve been best friends. Plus my school was full, white teachers, and Asian teachers. When I had my hair cornrowed, & wore all black 2 teachers reported that they were concerned about me because of what I was wearing. These r also 2 teachers that witnessed bullying in class & did NOTHING about it

I used to buy cigarettes and gin for my grandma when I was a teenager. She’d send me to the corner store with a note requesting the items, or she’d call the store and tell them that I was coming and described me over the phone, what she wanted and how much money she was sending with me.

This movie came out when I was a kid we only had 3 movies on Dvd when the cable would get cut for a short time. Precious, Shrek the Third, and Chitty chitty bang bang. Guess which got played the most. This movie made me so uncomfortable I didnt understand most of what was going on. I just- Shrek the Third is my favorite movie lets just put it like that 😂

When watching this with as an adult what I see as far as the mother is that the mother was jealous of precious. She was jealous that he SA’d her and precious had 2 kids (but in her head precious was the “other woman”) then at the end when the mom kept saying “that was my man…MY MAN” confirmed it for me…. One thing I will say though, is that this is very prevalent in our community. When mothers be jealous of the daughters and mothers being their daughters first bully (not saying all mothers but some) and it’s sick. I can never wrap my head around that whole stigma because we didn’t ask to be here

Her mother was a narcissistic pick me

One scene that I never understood and glanced over was when precious was doing her hair in the mirror and Monique said “come take care of mommy, precious.” This was a SA situation between her and her mother. 😓. Precious couldn’t catch a break.

In the '80s it wasn't common for 16-year-olds to buy cigarettes and lottery tickets for their parents to TBH. Especially if they're known in the community or they go to that corner store often. Convenience store. We have them up here in Canada too bro. I grew up around people like this as well. Dysfunctional families, I think most Most lower middle class minority families experience something like this. Well I think I don't know. It depends we have choices in life. i think monique’s character was a teen mom. she had precious in HS and she dropped out and decided to stay with her baby daddy and either she just never wanted to try to finish school or something/someone wasn’t letting her. and bc precious has an opportunity to get her ish together thts another reason in her head to resent and be jealous of precious. (not sure if this is like a reasonable explanation, it’s been a min since i’ve watched this movie. it’s just a little theory i have.)
