This movie is so underrated, and I don't care what anyone says about the Bryan Adams soundtrack - I love it!

The scene where Spirit is dragged away from Rain after she's been shot is one of the most painful things I remember watching in theaters as a kid.

Oh! Matt Damon is the narrator for this film, he basically voices Spirit. Although the horses don't talk, you can understand what they're "saying" very easily.

My school took us to see this in theaters. The football team was bummed out that we were seeing "that gay ass horse movie". They all left the theater crying. Very powerful film.

The portrayal of indigenous people in this movie makes me so happy, especially when you compare them to the red skinned, accented ones in Peter Pan.

Oh, man, as a horse nerd I could talk about this movie for hours. Fun fact: the horse noises in this movie were all recorded from real horses, as opposed to being made by special effects. And although not completely accurate, the horses' body language and behavior is fairly on point throughout this movie! Fact that no one asked for, at around 17:25 when Spirit is watching Rain, he briefly demonstrates behavior of a stallion who's...*frustrated* over being kept from a mare.

Spirit actually was one of the first to have the "Camera" spin around a 2D animation. This movie was a blend of 3D models and 2D animation. The behind the scenes are GREAT to watch. The score is made by Hans Zimmer, same composer as in The Prince of Egypt. He is one of the best at making scores that tell the story of the movie. Hans Zimmer partnered with Bryan Adams, who sang wrote the songs while Zimmer wrote the Score (instrumental pieces). The amazing part is how accurate the animations for the horses are. Horse are one of the HARDEST animals to animate due to each leg moving differently. The animators had to take some equine biology and skeletal and muscle lessons in order to properly animate horses. Most movies or tv shows before hadn't accurately portrayed horses in animation before so Dreamsworks wanted to put in the effort to be the first. (I think) Then some key facts are baby horses are called foals. If the foal is female, it is a filly, and if a male, its called a colt. Spurs were and are used in the Equine community and are highly debated on. Personally, I don't think you need to use spurs, but how the Colonel is not using them how they are suppose to be used for. He dug them in too much, when they are suppose to be used extremely caution. This movie is one that pulls the heart strings. Rain got shot by Colonel and you can actually see the bullet hole. :( Though this movie doesn't portray horses social structure, it does so how horses have deep ties to each other. They form family units. As horrible as it is that the horse had to pull up the train... that was the only way to move such a heavy object like a train. They could have used more horses to distribute the weight, but this was all to get you to sympathize with Spirit. Even though Man is the main bad guy in this movie, man is also a friend. This movie is also a story of change. The whole reason why Spirit had eyebrows was to help show emotion. This movie was MY childhood. It is the reason why I love horses so much and hope to get my own mustang some day.

I love the scenes of Spirit racing the eagle and the eagle’s shadow is over his back. Then at the end, when they make that epic jump, after so long of him fighting to go home, Little Creek cries out and spreads his arms like an eagle. 🦅

I would not be surprised if Spirit and Littlecreek stayed friends for life, and maybe Spirit would have visited him every few years with his entire family. I could imagine him and Rain going back to the village with their own kids, being able to meet Littlecreek's kids, too.

I loved that Spirit went with the people who captured him to protect his family. He was probably thinking, "Okay, one day, I'm going to get back home, but right now, I don't really have a choice here. Have to protect my family, only way I can do that is if I go with them."

19:34 THE MOST underrated romantic scene in the history of cinema honestly, the music, the scenery, the chemistry, ugh. and they're not even humans

They work so hard to break him, because they can see he's fearless, and the less a horse reacts to the chaos of a battle, the better a mount they'll be. If they DID succeed in breaking him, he probably would've been given to a captain to lead the charges. It's ironic, that the more he fights back, the more appealing he becomes.

People are talking about Bryan Adams and Hans Zimmer behind the score, but not enough people are talking about how the bloody legend James Baxter was one of the animators, which is why things look so smooth and fluid, and the characters move so realistically!

Hans Zimmer outdid himself with this score. It's one of his best ever 🥰

I've never cried when they took spirit away, but your tears are powerful. She actually isn't pregnant, it's just her breed of horse. She's pretty healthy and has a great build.

Hans Zimmer did both Prince of Eygpt and Spirit. He is able to capture emotions in the score so much... no composer can give me goosebumps like he can. Bryan Adam's songs were great as well. Sound the Bugle was totally my go too teenage emo song... hahaha

I WILL say, I am impressed that the horses don't say a WORD in this movie (other than Spirit narrating) but you can still tell EXACTLY what they are thinking and feeling. Its not boring or tedious, but the animation (both for the movie as a whole and the horses' expressions) is stunning.

I identify a lot when Rain gets angry at Spirit for chasing Little Creek and he goes “Mares 🙄”, because I have a Mare😂 and she’s as stubborn as Rain hahaha

This was the movie that started my love for horses and animals and nature in general. Also started my love for drawing horses. SO UNDERRATED

I never realised how expressive the horses are even without speaking (thank for that, it wouldn'd be same) and now I got it they have eyebrows. I didn't really noticed that before and I watched it a lot when I was a kid.

The thing they were on for the leap was actually higher than the ledge on the other side so that jump is kinda believable.

..... my great grandpa's funeral was today and he and I watched this movie together a lot.... feels right to watch your reaction to it today

The moment Spirit wonders if his herd misses him and they all look at the sky at the same moment and when he reunites with Rain always get me. Literal tears.

I think you talked over my favorite line in Sound the Bugle. “If you lose yourself, your courage soon will follow.” So much meaning in that line, such an underrated song. Probably my favorite in any animated movie honestly

After this I have to recommend the 1994 Black Beauty. A touching story about a horse's life. It is a classic.

I've seen this movie so many times and I *always* cry whenever Rain gets shot :( it's so heart wrenching even though I know she survives. Spirit is a definite favorite of mine and I'm not gonna watch the monstrosity of a "sequel" they're making. Bleh.

Definitely one of the best opening scores to a movie. The scenery, the camera motion, the music all swells together so beautifully and powerfully. Right out of the gate, they are telling you what they are going for in this film. Epic. Strength. Spirit. Freedom. Heart.

I watched my VHS up and down as a child. That was one of my favourite movies! I watched it in german so the songs were translated and still full of feelings. The saddest part for me was always the ride in the snowy train. With that song I always tear up. Even now I adore this movie and like to watch it then and again. I'm happy that you loved it as well!

I cry for pretty much this whole movie. For another Very emotional movie that is super underrated outside the horse community you have to see Black Beauty. The version with Sean Bean in it. Gorgeous movie tackling some very serious things that horses have had to live though over the years in our service.

I loved this movie as a kid. I like how there is barely any dialogue between the characters because it's from Spirit's point of view. This so much better than that abomination of a mini-series. The new one looks even worse. Just watch this one, instead.

My favorite detail in this movie is during the beginning when Spirit's narrator says "And flying? there were times I believed I could." And then cue Spirit and Little Creek later jumping across the canyon, so far, it could be said they were flying.

One of my favorite things about this movie is you are getting Spirit's narrative but none of the other horses speak. They somehow made me speak horse, I saw this when I was young and it convinced me momentarily that I could totally talk to my grandfather's horses. Can't even pick a favorite character because I fell in love with all of them, even the "bad guy".

I watched this movie so much as a kid I scratched the DVD.

I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by horses (since my family has been dedicated to raising horses for 2 generations) they are the kindest and most noble animals that you can have on earth, there is no feeling that can be compared to riding a horse I remember seeing this movie when I was six years old and it is still one of my favorite movies. I fondly remember one of my favorite stallions who was exactly identical to the horse in this movie, sadly he passed away last year, but I'm sure he runs free in the clouds

Me and my best friend LOVES this movie, and one year when we were teenagers when we were on a camp we started this movie on her computer in our room. We had the window open so people outside heard the music and at the end of the movie we had probably like 15 people completely spellbound by it in our room. Good times! =D

One of the best lines in the whole movie is when the narrator says “Mares” after Rain stood up for Little Creek. Having a bunch of mares, it is so freaking true. They’re awesome, but rude, moody, pushy and downright hostile sometimes.

I also grew up with this film. This film and the ending of Hidalgo: there is an inherent beauty in wild horses running.

This movie will always have a special place in my heart, especially since it was the first film I ever saw in theaters. I also have to praise Bryan Adams because in my opinion, he gave us one of the best animated film soundtracks ever and anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy!

This score is absolutely one of Hans Zimmer's best soundtracks. The score that plays during Spirit and Little Creek's escape through the canyon is dangerous for me to play when I'm driving because it makes me want to race other cars LOL.

5:20 I think theres so many songs because unlike MANY other animal themed movies the horses are actual animals that can't talk and can only express themselves in certain ways so instead of dialogue it's amazingly emotional music lol this movie is and always will forever be one of my all time favorite movies EVER

I am a Lakota like Little creek in this movie from the Oglala and and if you ever knew anything about the Lakota we are known for our Magnificent Horse training skills and our connection with horses. So they film really stuck with me on a personal level. And im glad it's still being preserved.

i love how emotional you are about this movie. this is one of my go to movies for when i just need to cry. im 23 years old and still watch this movie regularly. the story is so emotional and well told. it doesn't matter that the animation is almost 20 years old now, or that its basic.

The Colonel is actually supposed to be George Custer, aka a total egomaniac. Now day, real cowboys don’t use sharp spurs, the things that he was kicking Spirit with. They’re blunt, and mostly used for fashion, though, when they are used, it’s more of a tap to a part of their belly that is covered with thick fat, or muscles. It’s to motivate the horse to speed up. Spirit was my favorite movie, and I reminds me of my home.

This is actually the only animated film that didn't come out with extremely bad cartoon shows. Like the art to keep them the way they originally look, looks amazing.

This movie was my absolute FAVORITE as a kid, and I think the fact that the animals don't talk (besides narration now and then) helped a lot with that, 5 year old me could easily tell what was happening because the character's emotions were all centered around their facial and physical expressions. I would be lying if I said I didn't cry through the whole video. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron has been my favorite movie since I was little and it makes me cry within the first 5 minutes. So happy that this video got recommended to me and I am glad I watched it!

Massive props to the animators for doing such a fantastic job with the horses' expressions. The horse characters didn't NEED to talk, they were given enough detail and effort that, even if you took away the songs and the narration (which I never minded, actually) you'd still be able to interpret the characters' emotions through the expressive faces and even the body language. The amount of research that went into equine behavior, posture, body language - this movie was a labor of love and it shows.

This was my dog's favorite movie before he died. He would just sit there and stare at the screen transfixed, and every time the villain came on screen he would growl.

You were curious about it so here you go. It is commonly believed that Native Americans only painted their horses for battle, but they were also painted before buffalo hunts. Specific symbols were reserved for hunting to display a horse's past achievements, and bring protection and good luck to the horse and rider. The circle around the eye for example was believed make the horse’s senses stronger, a circle with a zigzag through it going down the leg from the shoulder was a symbol of speed and stealth. Different colors also had different meanings too. White spots on the chest were a prayer to Native American Gods for hail to fall on their enemy (essentially weather to weaken the enemy). I have always been fascinated with the connection between Native Americans and horses and how they respected them as much as the people of their own tribe.

Nick: “Oh there’s something bad there.”Me an intellectual: “yes humans.” Jokes aside, the “They say the history of the West was written on the saddle of a horse, but it was never told by one.” is one of the best opening scenes ever- especially with those visuals. This, THIS, is the movie that made me fall in love with animation and drawing. It was also the first movie I ever owned on DVD because my dad knew I loved horses but had no idea what this movie was (back in the era when DVD was a new thing and Apple didn’t exist yet), and on DVD they had the behind the scenes features that showed how the animators drew certain features of the horses, their struggles with certain movements, how they changed from one scene to another, etc. it blew my mind and made me the artist I am today. Those extra features on DVD were just the best- and I still play this movie on our VHS/DVD combo player for that full blown nostalgia-travel back in time feeling. This movie owns my heart. I’m a die hard Disney fan, but the gems Dreamworks have, especially the 2D movies, are one of the most rarest and valuable memories I have and I treasure them. And some singers just give it their all for these movies: Phil Collins for Tarzan? ✅ Was going STUPID in the studio. Elton John for Lion King? ✅ As hot as those desert scenes. Bryan Adams for Spirit? ✅ Unmatched like the best gun slinger in the Wild West.

Love seeing this movie get the appreciation it deserves. It was one of my absolute favourites as a child, and it's still dear to me as an adult.

i love how the animators took the time to study real horses and how they behave (like when spirit nipped at the sleeping dude at the camp) and how they move. it is 100 percent accurate! and i say this as a horse person. it's also good that they don't talk, but convey emotions through bodylanguage and you can just hear spirit's thoughts.

Oh I am so happy. People, especially reactors I follow, are finally watching this criminally underrated masterpiece. Earlier today I saw TotallyCody say he will be reacting to this on Friday, and then I see you upload a reaction! I haven't actually watched the movie in a long while, but I still listen to the soundtrack all the time.

This movie is one of my childhood classics that was constantly on. My parents divorced when I was very young, and my dad kept this movie at his place when I came and visited. He even bought the soundtrack/score for this on CD. Him and I would listen to it a lot. I’m 23 now, but my dad just recently told me that every time I left to go back to my moms place, he would play that sad song after spirit and rain are separate. It hurts my heart that he felt that way, and it’s one of the reasons this movie still holds a special place in my heart

One of my favorite movies ever!! :D Horses are pretty darn hard to animate in this semi-realistic style, so the fact that they made them fully emotive and understandable without speech is a well-executed marvel. I was hoping you would love the scenery and especially the music in this one! 😄 It's by Hans Zimmer, who also scored movies like The Lion King, Gladiator, and (with Stephen Schwartz) The Prince of Egypt among sooo many other epics. Definitely one of the best composers of our time!! The only downside of this movie is that it was Dreamworks' last-ditch effort to save its 2D animation building. The movie didn't make the money they had hoped, so it was the last of its kind. 😢 But at least it's getting the love it deserves now! 💖
