In reference to 30:57, my dad actually saw A New Hope in theaters in 77. He said that at the end of the movie, during the scene where everyone gets their medals, the entire theater was standing and cheering and losing their minds. Must have been something. Wish we had things that good, nowadays

What few people realize is that the Death Star conference room scene is easily the best-written exposition-dump in any movie ever. You learn a ton from everything but never feel like anyone is looking into the camera and saying "So here's how the galaxy is politically organized . . . "

I saw this movie in 1977 in the theater. I was 8 at the time. It truly was unlike anything that anyone had ever seen before. The theater was so crowded none of the kids got seats. We had to sit on parents laps or on the floor. It was an amazing experience!

I never thought about it but modern movies are obsessed with SHOWING the death of its characters happen. But what was so moving and heartbreaking about the aunt and uncles death was that luke arrived andnit was already too late. And their burned skeletons on the ground is so grusome for an old movie!

The fact that you could put yourself in the frame of reference of 1977 is fantastic. To many reviewers are jaded by the current state of things and don't appreciate just how groundbreaking this was.

My dad took me to see the original 5 or 6 times in the summer of 1977. I was 8. It was life changing. Even my dad, who was a WWII vet (for age perspective) loved it.

I was in my 20s when I saw this for, like, 10 times! I'm 71 now! It's still a great movies! But I saw it in an old, one giant screen theater with speakers under every seat! When that 1st giant ship came overhead on a screen that stretched from floor to ceiling & the seats started rumbling - WOW! MASSIVE SENSORY OVERLOAD! It was WONDERFUL! ❤️

As someone who is a lifelong Star Wars fan born in 2000, its heartwarming to see all the comments of people who experienced ANH back in '77 and the phenomenon it was and still is. Another testament to how addictive the series is comes from my own story of how I became a fan. i remember the first time I ever saw Star Wars was when I was 4 or 5 on vacation. I walked in on my mom in her room getting ready for bed and watching Return of the Jedi and it happened to be the iconic "I am your father" scene. I remember immediately being transfixed on Vader and my mom telling me the story of how she first saw it in theaters. 20 years later here I am, feeling like I'm 5 again, sitting with my mom and marveling at how cool everything is.

I truly envy the experience of getting to enjoy the Star Wars movies for the first time. Some are better than others, but much like pizza, even when it's not great, it's still pretty good

The SPFX were literally invented for this movie. The dynamic movements of the ships and the seamless backgrounds giving enhanced motion, too k everyone by suprise. Imagine seeing this in 1977, in 70 MM when that first dive run into trench occurs. You could feel it.

I love it every time you say, “This movie holds up so well! I’m impressed this was made in 77’!” Because the interesting thing is none of this existed previously or even currently with anyone else at that time! Lucasfilm invented this stuff! There was no special effects team, this level of graphics, let alone the technology. Lucasfilm quite literally invented the tech, the software, and the necessary department for any of this to exist to begin with! It’s all very fascinating that we get to see this breakthrough in both movie making and technology at once.

My parents took me to see this in the theater in '77. I'll never forget the opening scene when we first see the star destroyer fly over. The entire theater took a collective gasp. It was so epic. No one had ever seen anything like it before.

I was in high school when this came out. We walked in the theater thinking this was "just another movie". The special effects were so different than anything I had ever seen, I knew it was not possible, but it looked to me like they filmed it in outer space. Everything about it was different than anything we had ever seen before.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and right after this movie came out, at our very alternative middle school we had a guy come teach Tai Chi. Feeling energy moving into my hands, my 12-year old brain thought “This is the Force. I can be a Jedi.” Even today I still practice martial arts, and through them I met my wife… Best wishes to you on your own journey.

I saw this in the theater in '77 (Side note, the tickets were only 25 cents). This movie had a huge impact on my preferences for the books I read and movies I have watched ever since I saw it.

I was 19 years old when I saw it on opening night. That opening shot, when the star destroyer came over the top of screen, my thought was, "OH MY GOD, movies just changed forever." We knew. I've undoubtedly seen it at LEAST 100 times. And I still get goosebumps when Han comes back.

Fun fact, the dragon snake thing that 3PO walks past in the beginning was actually areal prop and still exists, the production left in the desert after they were done filming and it’s still there, people still visit it along with the Lars homestead and another set from a future movie. Also if you liked Han Solo in this movie you’ll love Indiana jones, it’s basically Han Solo as the main character on earth

I was 7 in 1977. This film changed EVERYTHING for me as a kid. It really unpacked my imagination and paved the way for a lot of creative things I got into. Your reaction is spot on to how my 7 year old self felt.

For the time, cinematically, this was an extremely fast paced movie. One of the reasons people saw it in the theater so many times was that they felt like it couldn't all be taken in in one viewing. This set the stage for the action movies that would be increasingly faster paced as the decades progressed. (That said the story itself follows the basic plot of the classic "Hero's Journey" present in myths and legends for thousands of years. The creator of Star Wars was big fan of writer Joseph Cambell's book outlining these plot elements. (A many other elements came from Japanese samurai movie director Akira Kurosawa's "The Hidden Fortress".

The actor playing Vader in the suit was David Prowse - his height 6ft 6inches. He was also The Green Cross Code man when I was a kid in the 80s who taught kids how to cross the road on the tv. He died in 2020. I first watched Star Wars when I was 15, though I watched Spaceballs before I saw Star Wars.

Okay, here is what it was like in May 1977 seeing Star Wars. Remember cable was really not around , there were no Block buster video stores , or VCRs so normally you had to wait for years for a film to be on network television. and on a small screen with a ton of commercials. So you really had to go to the cinema to see it. Here is how it went for my 3 brothers and I. We had to plan which day, we packed a lunch , and all four of us took turns standing in line for 8 hours!!! The line was around the building twice, you only hoped that when you got to the ticket booth it was not sold out yet! There were 2 other guys we chatted with in line in front of us. We all got in after waiting for over 8 hours!!. On the big screen the big sound, and in seconds you were taken away to another land. At the end when the screen credits ran everyone, I mean everyone stood up, clapped and cheered. There was never anything like it.!! Now the 2 guys in front of the line with us. Got right back in line to see it again. My whole family probably went at least a dozen times to see it. Loved every minute. But then we had to wait 3 years to see Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back. But worth the wait. So glad you got to see it, just wish you could have seen it at the cinema. George Lucas re-released Episodes, 4, 5 and 6 in 1997 with improvements made and some computer generated They were all in the cinema again, which helped raise money to do the prequels. There you go. and May the Force Be with You!

OMG this was so much fun!! I loved watching you be that 10-year-old kid I was when the movie came out and I saw it for the first time in the theater. Your excitement, goosebumps, genuine thrill was exactly how I felt. And yeah, it sure does hold up even in the short bit watching here with you. I turned 16 that summer, and yes, the special effects were freaking outlandish for the time. When the Death Star blew up, the entire theater stood and cheered…I had never sent that happen before.

I saw this in the theater back in 1977. I was seven and nothing could describe the experience other than pure magic. From the moment the Star Destroyer appeared to Chewy getting snubbed for a medal, I was in complete awe.

I was 8 years seeing this, original in the cinema. I used to count how many times I’d seen this film. I got up to 40. You used to be able to stay in the cinema, they would not kick you out. Got out of home for two showings in a row. Years later, I read the biography of Alec Guinness. He had such a versatile career, as an actor. He was paid well, for SW, but he didn’t like how Obi-Wan made him more famous than other acting. Alec had a story, where a young fan approached him on the street in England, and was ‘vibe’ on Obi-Wan, and how he’d seen this film 40 times. Alec said to the youth he shouldn’t waste all his time in the cinema. So, yeah, I stopped counting.

So the fun thing about this reaction is that you are genuinely displaying the TRUE meaning of Iconic. The characters in these movies are iconic because even people that have never seen the movies recognize them. This is such a fun reaction, especially since I just rewatched the original trilogy this past weekend.

For any series in general, ALWAYS watch in release order first, and then rewatch later in chronological order to understand all the bits and pieces you that might have gone over your head the first time.

The theater experience for these three movies was insanity. The whole theater would scream or cheer for even the tinyest jokes. Everybody was just INTO IT. I have never had a movie-going experience like it, since.

I was a child, saw it in theatres 8 times. Star Wars was absolutely revolutionary at the time. We had never seen a space adventure like this - EVER. The ships flying, space battles, the creatures, the lightsabers, all of it was unheard of before, never at that scale. Plus the music, the script, the characters...it was an amazing leap in storytelling. Also very cool that you referenced Top Gun...when I watched Maverick I thought several times "omg, this is Star Wars"

By all accounts, seeing this movie on the big screen when it first came out was one of the most magical, transporting experiences people had ever had in a movie theater. It was INSTANTLY a huge pop-culture phenomenon - people couldn't stop watching it, talking about it, all the late-night shows did tons of jokes and sketches about it, there was every kind of merchandise you could imagine, and there was even a disco remix of the main theme that was top of the billboard charts and got played on the radio all the time!

Remarkable. I am so excited that you are watching them in order of RELEASE! I was 2 yrs old when this came out - so I didn't see it in theaters, but by the time I was able to read my folks had bought the read along kids story records (to play on the record player) so we knew the whole story and had plenty of coloring books by 1980!

I was 11 when this movie came out and everyone absolutely lost it in theatres. Cheering. Shouting. Amazing stuff. Not only that they created entirely new techniques during filming that pushed movie making forward in leaps and bounds. Damn son, you’ve got a wild ride ahead of you

The thing I love about you watching this is how much you seem to genuinely enjoy it. I've always found it hard to show Star Wars to an adult who hasn't seen it, because not having the nostalgia of watching it as a kid usually means they get bored watching it.

Yea astromech droids such as r2 basically can run diagnostics on a ship, repair it, and even on big ships the can eject from their ports and stick to the ship itself as it’s flying

This came out while my dad was in college and he always tells the story about how he couldn't get any of his friends to go to the theater with him to watch it. He saw it four times in the theater and by the third time word of mouth was so good that his friends finally went with him.

So happy you're watching star wars, these movies are just iconic. The characters, the quotes, the impact on cinema. I "HOPE" you enjoy them as much as i do.

I saw this in the theater when I was 8. It was magical. My parents were very strict and weren't going to let me and my brother see it. But one of their friends told them it was fine, it's basically on old "cowboy and Indian" movie set in space. And that's pretty accurate. It was the first movie I ever remember feeling it was real. The effects were mind blowing and it felt like we are really in space

This film was only released in 42 theaters originally. It broke 41 house records. When it was released in Japan in 1978, one of the producers, Allen Ladd Jr., attended the premiere. However, he was worried when the audience left the theater in complete silence. Fortunately, he learned later that silence was the ultimate compliment that a Japanese audience could give a film. If you want to hear some really great behind the scenes stuff, watch the documentary Empire of Dreams. It is a must watch for any diehard Star Wars fan. And the simple reason the guys at the beginning are only wearing helmets is that they broke as F. The Empire has all the cash.

I think one of the reasons why A New Hope has a relatively slow pacing, is because they needed to slowly build up the world to make it more grounded and believable for an unfamiliar audience.

I was five years old when I saw Star Wars back in 1978 in Bristol, U.K. with my family. We had to queue (wait in line) for over two hours. The line went from the doors, down the side of the cinema, up the next street, then down another street, until we had completed a circuit of the entire block. You don’t see queues like that anymore. That always left an impression on me, as well as that opening shot of the Star Destroyer chasing the Blockade Runner. It was huge. No one had ever seen anything like that before. This movie was groundbreaking.

Watching this in theaters when it was released was absolutely unbelievable. There was nothing remotely close to this at that time. To say our minds were blown would be an understatement. It really was life changing. I saw all 3 of the originals in theaters. Such amazing memories! Keep watching!

I have got to say, your reaction was so pure it made me remember when i saw this movie the first time. This has been my favorite so far.

Saw Star Wars at the drive in. The opening sequence was magic. The screen blended with the background in one massive star scape. Then the corvette on screen, followed by the star destroyer that just kept coming... Loved it.

I watched this movie in 77 while laying on the rear deck of my mom's Maverick (car, not truck). Even at age 5 this movie was so impactful that it ingrained itself upon my memory. Mind you, what you are seeing is a movie that has been updated a few times. Any scene where droids are whizzing around in the background or where monsters look really good is likely a modern addition. Also, while storm troopers aren't the brightest bulbs in the galaxy, bear in mind that from the moment the team landed on the Death Star, the imperial plan is to follow them to the rebel base. You can't follow dead people, so every blaster shot on the Death Star was MEANT to miss the team.

This is going to be a fun ride watching these with you. Don't worry about not doing dirty jokes, we do them ourselves if you don't 😂

They cast the actors for the prequels so well, Ik this is random but you can see that mark has the eyes of Hayden, and carrie has similar features to Natalie. It’s definitely obvious that they look related is what I mean! It’s just SO cool!

One of the things that makes the original trilogy stand out compared to today, all ships and sets are all physical props/designs. That’s not done nearly as in depth today. Obviously the VFX of lasers and lightsabers show their age, but they’re iconic and revolutionary at the time. I envy you getting to experience Star Wars for the first time, that feeling for so many fans has nearly impossible to relive again. 😭 Hope you’re ready, got a lot more to see and experience!!

Vader, saying, "I find your lack of faith... disturbing," while he force-chokes the guy from across the room, is one of the most badass villain lines on screen.

I hope you carry on with all the Star Wars movies/shows. The more you watch, the more you will see how truly evil Darth Vader really is, and in the series Obi-Wan, you will see how powerful he really is. Looking forward to this journey with you.

David Prowse the actor that wore the Darth Vader suit during the original trilogy was 6" 6'. The actor that supplied the voice of Vader is James Earl Jones who actually never met Carrie Fisher (Leia) until years later during an episode of Married with Children where they both guest starred as a father and daughter having issues. James Earl Jones has done many voice overs as well as playing characters himself on screen one of which is Mufasa in the Lion king.
