Watching the Earth Melt Away - Melting Arctic Sea Ice Shows Global Warming

In 2001, I did a story on a patient, tenacious, gregarious ornithologist named George Divoky, who had spent 28 years and counting, living on a forbidding stretch of ice north of Alaska, 3 months a year, studying his specialty, arctic seabirds. Inadvertently, what he also did was amass one of the world's largest experiential accounts of global warming. A lot of theoreticians who project climate change use algorithms, and scientifically based modeling to project the loss of the ice pack. By contrast, George has lived it, all these years, sleeping on the ice, living in solitary, difficult conditions, and making painstaking notes in old school, battered, salt stained notebooks. When I visited him, it was basically the two of us, stranded on the ice for nearly ten days, eating Dinty Moore beef stew and living in pup tents. You get to know each other in these conditions. George and I became friends and remain so to this day.
His study is now at 45 years in duration, and I went back up to Cooper Island this past July of 2019, with a film crew, to document his ongoing research, which is an astonishing and important act of perseverance. I photographed George standing once again in the very same place I photographed him all those years ago. Back in 2001, he was standing on ice. Now, in 2019, he is knee deep in water. To quote George, "The Arctic is melting."
Thank you, first of all, to George, for his ongoing, selfless work. And thank you to Nikon USA for their kind support. Thank you to an amazing crew! Lynn DelMastro was the executive producer and pulled the pieces together. Jon Brundage was our DOP and ran first camera. Mike Cali, our studio crew chief, ran second camera. Ryan Brooks of Flying Giant Productions did double duty as audio supervisor and drone pilot. Brett Satterlund shot the Seattle footage in George's home. Andrew Tomasino shot and edited the BTS footage. And our editor Tim Sevigny pulled it all together in his wonderful edit. #disappearingarcticseaice #globalwarming #cooperisland

Scientists like George Divoky and photographers like Joe McNally are so incredibly important as they document what is occurring. It is astonishing to me that there are still climate change deniers out there. Thank you for this video.

Joe, this is a world class video with a powerful and unique viewpoint on the changing world. I'm not a conservationist per se but this really had an impact. So much that I sent it to the BBC. I hope you and George get the recognition you deserve and the message is seen by a huge audience.

Such a wonderful story that poignantly humanizes the crisis facing our world. And there's a certain aching melancholy in that it's being experienced by someone in near isolation, who clearly made major life sacrifices to do this work. A big thanks to George for his dedication and determination. Terrific work, Joe.

I've lived in Anchorage, and have photographed it constantly since then. The changes discussed here are obvious to anyone who lives here... Warmer temps, dry summers with less wildlife and insects, more fires, warmer winters with less snow, etc.. It's tragic and undeniable. Thanks George, for your outstanding efforts, and thanks Joe, for photographing such a striking comparison.

Great work Joe, fantastic film and conservation story. Powerful comparison image of George and what great work he is doing. Crazy to think what's changed in only 18 years. We all need to push harder to tell these stories!

Thank you, Sam. Have always been fascinated by the human face, and couple that with the contest of George's work and the environment of Cooper, it's a good story to tell.

Thank you both for this video/documentary. Truly valuable work and where life should be focused on animals and the environment. World human population, pollution and growth have to be addressed and controlled, even if it is unfortunately one individual at a time. Thank yo Dr. Divoky

As usual, very interesting. Where I now live in England is a Temperate climate. However, long before I arrived, it was a desert, & the Mountains were much much taller than Everest. Then some time later the area entered an ice age. The ice carved out huge valleys. The mountains eroded & the ice melted, forming many large lakes. The mountains were now only a few thousand feet high. We are now approaching the Maunder Minimum, the next mini ice age. Climate does change. Get over it, we have only one choice; get over it & become extinct. That’s the way it is.
