The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film is the final installment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Jackson and Fran Walsh, and written by Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Jackson. Continuing the plot of The Two Towers, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are making their final way toward Mount Doom in Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum's true intentions, while Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and the rest are joining forces together against Sauron and his legions in Minas Tirith. It was preceded by The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002).

Denethor was a good man who succumbed to despair. And Sauron fed and amplified his despair through the palantir. Imagine if you lived next door to Hell itself. Every day, you look out your window, and you can see the most evil place in the world, and you can see they're growing stronger, while you grow weaker. And you have the burden of being in charge of a whole country, which will be the first country attacked. And then your son is killed... How long do you think you could maintain your courage under those circumstances? In the movies, he comes off like a total douchebag, but he's really more to be pitied. His story was a good one for most of his life, but with the rise of Sauron and the growing power of Mordor, it becomes tragic.
@And-ur6ol
@And-ur6ol 3 жыл бұрын
Something they don't mention in the movies, is that the closer you get to where the ring was made (mount doom), the stronger the ring gets. That is why the ring gets heavier. It is both a metaphor and a literal thing for Frodo. It is also why Mount Doom is so unguarded by Sauron. It is the ultimate "fail-safe" build in, that when you are where you can destory it, the ring is so powerful that whomever wield it, gets taken over. That is why Frodo fails at that point. And that is why the ring only can get destroyed, by an accident. That accident is created by having Gollum there. So Gollums most important role (from a meta-point) was to ensure the rings destruction.

The movies necessarily cut a lot of things down. In the books, Eowyn and Faramir are both in the Houses of Healing after the great battle, having both been hurt. Frodo went with the elves because he was dying of depression. Part of it was the physical pain he was in from the wound he received from the Nazgul and part because he was suffering from what today we would call PTSD. His three comrades moved on and became family men and leaders of the community but Frodo was stuck in place, basically. The elves left Middle Earth because the destruction of the One Ring took a great deal of their power with it and they took Frodo with them. In the book, 60 years later after Rosie died, Sam sailed to the West himself and he and Frodo were reunited.

For Frodo, I think a large part of his need to leave was that The Shire, and the Hobbits were one of the last truly good and innocent folk. The never learned war, they only wanted peace, good food and drink, a good pipe, and their friends and family. The thought of getting violent with anyone was almost unthinkable for them. Leaving the Shire was almost as foreign a thought. Frodo came back, with a great deal of darkness in him. What he went through had changed him so deeply that if he stayed, he could pollute the Shire with it. Hence the line, "We did save the Shire, but not for me." At least that is my take.

First his entire backstory is given (which doesn't add to the story but is simply to point out what a bad guy he was before he got that position), and then when he breaks the news of the death of Frodo, unlike in the movies, where the fellowship breaks down and become furious, they laugh at his claims and mock him. The main problem with the scene cuts and edits in the Return of the King is that by that time, Jackson was utterly blind exhausted from wrapping up filming the three movies plus call backs, simultaneously, and he made some bad decisions on the editing process. Every time I watch the editing process in the extras to the return of the king, I just want to say, dear God, lock the man in a dark room for about a month with a soft mattress and let him get some SLEEP, and THEN let him do the editing, omg. He's so blind exhausted!

Yeah that's why I don't like people arguing that "the theatrical versions are how it's meant to be consumed" no it's not. Originally, Peter Jackson wanted 3 movies per book, they had 24 rush hours for the first movie. *The studio* forced him to make tons of cuts and that's how we ended up with theatrical versions and the studios went bonkers about these movies being, still, "too long". That's just when they realized fans were hardcore and couldn't care less about spending 9 hours watching the same movie that they decided to cash in on it even more. Had PJ had his way, "as it's meant to be consumed" as he wanted to make it, there would be MUCH more content, even more than in the extended versions.

9:03 So elves are really intriguing creatures. Their emotions are felt so strongly that it affects their livelihood. Not only can they die of a broken heart, but in giving Aragorn that necklace in the first film, she basically bound herself to him, promising to give her life to him--literally. When he passes, she will soon follow. She chose a mortal life with Aragorn instead of immortal life. And it gets sadder--in Tolkien's world, elves and humans have different afterlives. So by choosing to live a mortal life with Aragorn, she will go to the afterlife of men when she dies. Elrond, her dad, won't even see her in the afterlife if he is to "die" as well. It's complicated, but basically, now Arwen is completely out of Elrond's reach and it's heartbreaking for him. Also, in short, they're not going to the afterlife in the end. They're going to the elves' original home, a place rich with magic, where Frodo will be able to fully heal and die happy.

Aragorn grants Faramir and Eowin to rule Ithilien. That's the area of Gondor between the river and Mordor where Faramir met Sam and Frodo and took them to his hideout behind the waterfall. Eowin's brother Eomer ended up ruling Rohan. All of Gondor, Rohan, and the land between the Misty Mountains where Moria is all the way to the sea, including the Shire, were part of Aragorn's kingdom. However, he granted the Hobbits the right to rule themselves. He came to visit, but would only come to the border and wouldn't enter signifying their rule. Sam became the mayor, Merry became the Master of Buckland and was called "Meriadoc the Magnificent", and Pippin became Thain of the Shire, kind of the leader of the Hobbit military. He was also still a Knight of Gondor and served as special counsel to King Elessar (Aragorn). So Pippin grew up.

35:34 - It is not that he will turn into Gollum, that danger already passed when Ring was destroyed. But Frodo was really affected by the mission much more than other hobbits. He carried the Ring the whole time (except tiny bit when he was captured and Sam took it for him) which took huge tool on him physically and mentally. Plus the stab injures from Witch King, cave troll in Moria and poison of Shelob... so when he returned home, it was not the same as before, because the journey changed him. Tolkien based this a lot from his own experience of PTSD, when he returned back from World War 1, seeing and expericening horrors and lost many friends there.

No one could willingly destroy the Ring in the heart of Sauron's power. If Bilbo or Frodo had killed him earlier on, the Ring wouldn't have been destroyed and Sauron would have won. Frodo was injured a lot in the trilogy. Stabbed by a Wraith and almost turned into a Wraith himself at Weathertop, then stabbed by Shelob the spider (daughter of the primordial darkness in Middle Earth mythology), then had his finger bitten off by Gollum after being corrupted by the ring. The book goes more into depth on it, but being allowed to sail into the West was a mercy for him. And remember, Gandalf died and was "sent back until his task was done".

Harry Potter took inspiration from the BOOKS not the movies. The two series of movies actually came out at the same time. The same month in the case of the first two movies. Orlando Bloom dosn't do much now. He was in some sort of fantasy series (Carnival Row) last year on I want to say netflix that wasn't bad. But it wasn't renewed or was delayed for the virus for season two. just googled it. Season two later this year. He did a lot of stuff around the time period of these movies though. He was in a movie called "kingdom of heaven" that was pretty good around this time. That was about one of the first Crusades and the Knights Templar. The Hobbits were basically "chillin" in the Shire. They changed it for the movies but Saruman was not killed where he was killed in the extended version. They actually let him and worm tongue go and they went to the Shire were Saruman had a secret mob like organization. Thats how he was getting the Pipe Weed Merry and Pippin were smoking. When they got there the two of them and their gangsters corrupted the Shire and took control of it and imprisoned or killed many Hobbits. In the books, the four Hobbits go back to the Shire and "cleanse it." They head an uprising and at the end of the uprising worm tongue kills Saruman and a hobbit shoots worm tongue with an arrow. By the way, two important scenes you want see in this version. One, is the Witch King kicking Gandalf's butt. Two Eowyn and Faramir become a couple. Faramir from the books is actually one of my favorite characters and they expand even more on their romance in the books.

Some people think Elrond is a bit hard on Aragorn, but the dude literally raised him and cares for him like a son. It's not that he doesn't believe in him or that he doesn't want his daughter to be with him, it's that he saw his ancestor Isildur fail to destroy the ring and feared Aragorn himself would not be strong enough when the time came. Plus, you know, Aragorn's line is directly descended from Elrond's brother Elros who chose to be mortal, so it must kind of suck for him to see his brother's progeny fuck up. Eowyn was made ruler in Theoden's stead while they were away at war, so she was supposed to go back home and rule until he came back. Since she went with the army she never ruled Rohan, and when Theoden died, since his son was also dead, the heir to Rohan's throne is automatically her brother Eomer. But don't worry, while recuperating from her injuries she meets Faramir who's also there healing form his own wounds and they fall in love and end up getting married, Faramir becomes Seneschal for Aragorn and they remain close and on good terms with both the King of Gondor and her brother the King of Rohan. The book explains it, and the extended version has a scene of Aragorn healing her at the hospital after the battle and then of her and Faramir meeting there while they're getting better, basically, and getting together.

There is actually a scene of Faramir and Eowyn bonding in the extended edition. It is a bit short and it happens cause both of them were injured and couldn't participate in the last battle in front of the gates of Mordor. Also some fun epilogue facts (spoilers obvi): Sam lives his life in the Shire until his wife dies and his kids grow up. Once that happens he passes the book to his daughter and sails to the Undying Lands where Frodo and the elves went. Sam was technically a ring bearer so it stands to reason for him to join them. Gimli and Legolas travel together for a time, visiting different places in Middle Earth and later Gimli establishes a dwarven realm in a place called the Glittering Caves. Once that is done and once Arwen and Aragorn pass away, Legolas and Gimli sail for the Undying Lands. Since only elves and ring bearers are allowed there, Legolas sort of smuggles him in 😂. Their friendship is truly something else. As for Merry and Pippin, both of them become important leaders. The former becomes master of Buckland and the latter becomes the Thain of the Shire. Once they become old, they travel together once again and finally live out the rest of their lives in Gondor with Aragorn. They are even entombed alongside him and Arwen.

The fundementals for the viewer on the Aragorn and Arwen love story is almost entirely cut out of the theatrical versions. To understand them on a deeper more emotional level you need the scenes from the extended movies. Otherwise you're right, Aragorn and Eowyn have more screen time and are built up better in the theatricals. Something that unfortunately isn't clearly communicated in either versions though is that Eowyn isn't Really in love with him, it's like he says she loves "but a shadow of a thought". He's this super badass, noble and respected warrior that waltzes in and does all sorts of heoric shit And he totally respects here as a person and as a warrior from the start. What she is in love with isn't actually Aragorn, it's the way he treats her and sees her for who she really is which isn't something the men in her life up to that point do. He treats her like an equal and she loves him for it but it's more adoration mixed with a crush because.... lets face it, he's hot. Her relationship with Faramir is woefully underdeveloped in the movies and much better constructed in the books. In the movies Faramir feels like a consolation prize because Aragorn was taken but really it's a relationship that grows over a lot of time being spent alone together in the infirmary in Gondor.

Three facts for you, two of them might make you think different of two caracters : First yes, Eowyn and Faramir get together, and it's in the extended version. Second fact, in the extended version of the second movie you see how Boromir is actually genuiely a nice guy and a hero, and he love his little brother and defend him against his father, it's the ring that make him go nuts against Frodo, which he deeply regret. And third fact, actually Denethor (Boromir and Faramir father) had also a Palantír (the black globe that Saruman has) and was being kind of manipulated by Sauron trought it the same way Theoden was by Saruman, just instead it make him super paranoie and crazy. He wasn't an actual crazy as******, but that's just in the book.

A bit of book lore. Denethor also has a palantir, one of the crystal balls that allows communication over long distances. Sauron has one too. Denethor was using it to try to mentally assail Sauron and see his intentions. Saruman was doing the same. Both has good intentions but underestimated the power of Sauron, who was able to corrupt their minds via the connection and bend them to his will. I point this out because it allows them to be seen in a somewhat more sympathetic light.

Arwen, in choosing the fate of humans, still has the extended life of elves relative to humans, but instead of living forever, she's going to kind of just wither and die of sorrow eventually, rather than go to the continent to the west of Middle-Earth where the gods/angels of the One God keep the elven "heaven", where the rest of the elves are going. The two groups basically have two separate kinds of afterlife; even dead elves don't die the same as humans, in the books, unless they choose a mortal fate, and even then, only "half-elves", or elves that are part human like Elrond and Arwen-or Elrond's "human" brother, and Aragorn's bajillionith great-grandfather, Elros-get the option, iirc. It's complicated, but it's dealt with in the Silmarillion, which is kind of like the Elven Iliad about the *really* great heroes that fought the *real fight* against Sauron's old boss millennia earlier, as well as being Tolkien's "Big Worldbuilding Book". It's a good book, but it's less a novel and more a prose epic, which tends to throw people off at first.

When Gandalf leads the eagles to save Frodo and Sam, you can see he brought three eagles. I like to think he was holding out hope that Smeagol had survived. In case it wasn't clear, the ring gets more powerful the closer it is to Mt Doom. Of course you wanted them to move faster toward the end, but the ring just got harder and harder to carry. I'm pretty sure Tolkien said at some point that when you're actually in Mt Doom, the ring is so powerful that it would be impossible for literally anyone to willingly destroy it. That's why it turned out to be a good thing that Gollum wasn't killed earlier; he creates a condition where it can fall in basically by accident. As for why Frodo has to sail away at the end, while the Weathertop wound is part of it, I think you were actually onto something with your original comments about the ring still having a hold on him. I don't think he was going to turn into Gollum, since the ring had been destroyed, but I generally think of it like there was a part of him that got destroyed along with the ring. You can see the same sort of thing happened with Bilbo -- at the end he's still asking if he could see the ring one last time, which indicates that longing is never going to go away. So Frodo sailing off is the only way he'll ever be able to be at peace. "What are all the other hobbits up to back in the Shire?" -- I'm pretty sure most in the Shire weren't even aware anything important was going on. Most hobbits keep to their own business, and I think they just don't worry about foreign affairs. Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin are really exceptional in that regard. In the book, though, there's an extra arc that drags out the epilogue even farther: Saruman, after Sauron was destroyed, went back to the Shire to try to take over, so the hobbits had to defeat him again.

You're right about the ringbearers and the elves leaving middle earth. It is hinted at in the Return of the King and cleared up later in the Silmarillion. Each ring of power corrupts it's bearer over time. This is, why leaving Samwise behind is cosidered to be such a big gamble, because he might have carried the ring only for a few hours, but he still legitimately possessed it and nobody can be a hunred percent certain, that this hasn't tainted him. As for Gandalf, he was the "Wielder of the Flame of Anor" in short a ringbearer. As the Flame of Anor is an Alias vor Narya the Ring of Fire. Meanwhile Galadriel was bearing Nenya and Elrond was responsible for Vilya. At least Nenya can bee seen on Galadriels hand in the Films, if only for a brief moment though. And you can catch a glimpse of Narya at the end of the third movie in the grey havens scene. That's the three rings of the elves taken out of the picture. The nine of the Nazgul got destroyed with their master when Barad-Dur got destroyed. And the seven rings of the dwarves... well, let's say they "misplaced" them somehow and only three survived into the age of the ringwar. Sauron offered them to Dáin if the Dwarves would help him find the one ring. But for some reason good ol' Dáin was having none of it. So the remaining three dwarven rings also shared the fate of the nine and Barad-Dur. ;-)

Exactly, they have no idea. It’s an apt description of Tolkien’s England during WWI. The soldiers came home & most of the families had absolutely no idea what they’d actually been through. Only those who were there & went through it could truly understand.

Bookwise thats not true. Saruman takes the war to the shire. Peter Jackson hints on that in a scene from the first movie where frodo sees the shire in flames and his friends being held slaves in the mirror of galadriel

So there's only two ways elves can die, according to Tolkien: either being killed in battle, or dying of grief. Arwen's separation from Aragorn is causing her to die of grief, which is why Elrond finally sees reason and realizes his daughter's only hope is for Aragorn to defeat Sauron.

Since there are multiple (partial) explanations of the Palantir, let me expound. The Palantir were stones made by the Elves as a means of seeing the past, present, and future. Seven were given to the men of Numenor who went to Middle Earth (Aragorn's ancestors). Of the seven, four were held by Gondor, the other three by it's northern brother Kingdom (Arnor). After Sauron's first defeat, Gondor kept each of its stones in one of four fortresses, to be used in the defense of that part on the land: - Osgiliath (Capital of Gondor, later abandoned. These are the ruins Faramir tried to defend in the last two movies. The Palantir held here was lost.) - Minas Ithil (Meant to keep an eye on Mordor, it was captured by the Nazgul and renamed Minas Morgul. The Palantir held here was taken by Sauron.) - Orthanc (Later named Isenguard, it became Saruman's home after Gondor abandoned it. Saruman communicated with Sauron using the Palantir held here.) - Minas Tirith (Capital of Gondor during the movies. Denethor couldn't resist peering into its Palantir, but he did not have the mental will to control it, and so instead he only saw what Sauron wanted him to see. By the Return of the King, he had abandoned all hope.)

Orlando Bloom was recently in an Amazon show called Carnival Row. It's a fantasy show, and is really good, IMO. There's only one season at the moment, but there are plans for a second.

They are not sailing off to the afterlife. Valinor is a place where the Valar (greater spirits) and Mair (minor spirits) reside with elves that never left Valinor. Only Elves could go there now and the Wizards (Maiar) out if which only Gandalf was left in MiddleEarth. Bilbo and Frodo were given permission to go to due to them being ringbearers and as a means to heal. It is true that Valinor also serves as a sort of heaven for the Elves, more specifically the halls of Mandos, but that is not where they are going. Eventually even Frodo and Bilbo will die there and go to wherever their kind go.

Actually, in The Fellowship of the Ring, (The Book) the weapons that Merry and Pippin receive, are when they are in the Barrow-downs which is not included in LOTR's movies. In the books, it is in the chapter regarding Tom Bombadill. Specifically, these weapons are from the North Kingdom of Arnor, (where the Dunedin remain) and these weapons have been specifically enchanted by elven spells ensuring the destruction of the witch-king of Agmar. When Merry uses this weapon and stabs the Witch-King, it opens him to the blow from Eowyn which destroys him.

What some people don't get is that Frodo didn't actually save Middle Earth. He put the ring on his finger and wanted to keep it for himself at Mount Doom. If Golem hadn't attacked him and bit it off, Frodo would have become just like Golem and Middle Earth would have been destroyed. So technically Golem saved Middle Earth even though it was unintentional.

The film's did Denethor & Faramir dirty, Denethor really is a noble and good man but we see him at his weakest moment when he gives into deapair. It's like if you knew nothing about Borimir except the scene where he tries to tale the ring... Faramir's chatacter is condensed for the sake of the movie and comes off as abused child, but in the books has a lot more backbone.

They do a much better job of setting up the family dynamic in the extended version. And while I first disliked it, when I heard the explanation for why he didn't immediately help Frodo in the films, I agreed it was a better choice. And was really disappointed not even the extended version showed that Denethor had a palantir and that's why he went crazy/paranoid. Would have taken only several extra seconds to put that in.

I didn’t like Faramirs choice in the movie at first (still not a big fan of bringing the ring to Osgiliath), but think it gives more strength to Aragorns choice of closing Frodo’s hand and saying no to the ring.

Denethor is indeed a better man in the books, but still has strong flaws. He is shown as proud, suspicious about others' power (especially Gandalf and Aragorn), and even if he doesn't openly say so he clearly makes Faramir understand that he would have prefered see him die instead of Boromir ...

LOTR and the Hobbit make up about 1% of the history of the world that JRR Tolkien created. The new Amazon series will be set in the second age, 3441 years, very eventful. Yet, I still find the years of the trees, and the first age even more fascinating. All part of the "silmarillion"

Long after the events of LOTR, after Sams wife had passed and his children were grown, a ship came for Sam and took him to the Undying Lands because he had been a ringbearer albeit for a short time. He then reunited with Frodo(who had healed from his wounds and the corruption of the ring) in the Undying Lands.

To answer your question the hobbits in the shire had no clue any of this was happening. By this point though, Saruman has seized the Shire and created a totalitarian state out of it. Oh and hes running this operation while living in Frodos house.

So, Aragorns father was killed by orchs when he was 2 years old. After that his mother took him to Elrond in rivendell and he was basically raised there. During his youth, Arwen lived with her grandmother (her mothers mother is Galadriel, Cate Blanchetts character). Arwen and Aragorn first met when he was 20 years old and she had just returned back home and they basically fell in love with eachother from the get go. Bear in mind that Aragorn is 87 in the lord of the rings. Aragorn was a Dunedain, a race of men that had a life span three times longer than normal men.

Just to note, when Frodo, Bilbo, et al go to the undying lands, it's not the land of the dead, it's literally the land of the Gods where they will be immortal (in Unfinished Tales I think it is called Aman). I called the undying lands the Land of the Gods in a previous video, because it is where the Gods of middle earth reside.

I did see a video explaining that while Frodo is the protagonist, it is Sam who is the hero and goes on the hero's journey. And I don't think Gandalf minded that he had to carry the entire conflict. It was literally his job. But he wasn't supposed to carry it this hard because he originally had the help of four others. Although Gandalf did get a power boost after he died, possibly because the others were useless.

There is a scene in the extended cut where Eowyn and Faramir meet each other in the halls of healing and have a very metaphorical and kind of deep conversation (which is why the scene was cut I think) about how Eowyn found fighting and war to be very different than her expectations where she decides to spend the rest of her life peacefully (basically "I've done plenty, I can rest now"). Also the appendices of the novels have more about Aragorn/Arwen and their backstory. Basically Aragorn is the descendant of Elrond's twin Elros who chose to become mortal the same way Arwen did (by like 20 generations or something) so his people have much longer lives than a normal human. Despite looking about 30-ish he's 87 when the LoTR takes place. He was raised by Elrond after the death of his father when he was about 3 and met Arwen when he was about 20 (she'd been in Lothlorien with her grandmother till then) basically falling in love at first sight. Eventually Elrond found out they were in love and told Aragorn that the only way he'd ever allow him to marry his daughter was if he became king. The reason Elrond's line can become mortal is because he's descended from an elf who fell in love with a human on his father's side and an elf/maia (which is basically an angel and is what gandalf is) who fell in love with a human on his mother's so all of his family are called "Paradhel" meaning half-elven. They have the unique gift that they can forsake their immortality and choose the "gift of men" which is to be mortal and reincarnate instead of live forever. Most of this comes from the silmarilion so it doesn't actually matter all that much for the sake of the LoTR but I still find all the lore fascinating. Sorry for the tangent.

Tolkien based LOTR somewhat on his experience in the first world war, thats why Frodo leaving in the end is important, showing the fact that not all scars fully heal, as in post trauma for soldiers in war etc.
