This week I wanted to take another Tyranid for a Slap Chopping spin. Lets see how a black and brown, two tone slap chop job can look on a Screamer Killer. Does it save time, does it make it look really nice with minimum effort? What do you think?

What do you think guys? Was two toning the miniature too much effort? Do tyranids even need underpainting? Has anyone started painting theirs yet? I’d love to see!

Two toning is great. Just a little more work for a much better result. LOVE the joint work, makes the skin look very 'alive' and has that sort of irritated flesh effect you would think a Tyranid would have in those spots!

Thank you for this series. I will definitely be using some of these techniques on mine. The whole time I was waiting for a wash or contrast over the bones but it never happened, and I think that is brilliant. Sometimes less really is more. I love the result. Well done.

Thanks Mitchel! Glad you can find it useful. I think some people would prefer a stronger contrast on the bones so a wash for them could be ideal. Like you I was really happy with just the Speedpaint so I left well enough alone and now have a miniature that was quick and looks great in my collection! Happy painting

Looks great! And I love how you are experimenting with different methods of underpainting, it really shows that you are not limited to the greyscale "dogma" that was born with "slapchop". Doing underpainting in different tones, og just in two steps ratver than three can be perfectly viable, and you not even need it at all.
@WatchItPaintIt

Thanks Rasmus. That’s how I actually came to enjoy slapchop by messsing about with different things and found what works for me! Having said that I think you’re right the two step process might work really well on these minis and with Speedpaint 2.0. I need to try that out again, I found it wayyyyy too dark a year ago, but different minis and different paints need another test. Happy painting!

Great job ! To my taste the final result lacks a tiny bit of contrast overall, i think i would have used less white at the end of the drybrush step but its just personal taste. Keep up the nice slap chop content !!

Thanks man! Absolutely, I think I mentioned in the video how much grey and white I add is my personal preference. Think this technique lends to having a lot of room for personalisation for people. Ah, thanks for showing some blending with speedpaint, looks really awesome. I hope to do highlights after my speedpaint layer (as opposed to drybush), to keep my finish preference. Would be great to see you try that style too (slap chop, speedpaint, then 1 colour highlight). Thanks for trying different base coat too, super interesting. I think the slap chop does look good 👍👍

Looks nice! I've been experimenting with learning slap chop a bit myself and I think what's missing there on the body is that there's not enough contrast between your darkest dark and lightest light. The ribcage really shows it off. Not sure if it's the drybrushing too heavy or the color choice. But experimenting and finding out is fun! Thanks for the great content and hope you enjoyed your one good weather day for the year.
@WatchItPaintIt

I kinda like the subtle ness of the skin. But I totally see what you mean! I perhaps go too strong with the lighter colours for most people but I got burnt by my minis being way too dark when I first started slap chop. Perhaps because I now use Speedpaint 2.0 I actually want much darker base coat? As you say, it’s fun experimenting and I’ll keep seeing what works for me but if nothing else it can show you what *not* to do if you want a stronger contrast! Thanks for the comment!!!

I think the secret to slap chop is to do the dry brushing in batches. Get 10-15 minis assembled, prime, then slap chop the gray/white. Then paint the ones you want and have more ready to go next time you're in the chair

Excellent video - I've got 7,000 points of Nids, so it only seemed appropriate to grab Leviathan and... you know, get some more. They're an amazing army for speed painting & batch painting. Though, if you do go for them, spend ages choosing your scheme - you'll be painting a lot of it!

@@WatchItPaintIt it's a speed friendly scheme, especially where the primer can do so much work on it! 4 is still early enough to change haha, though, that Screamer is a beaut, I'd struggle to bring myself to do that over. You'll just have to grab another :P

Reminder that when using speedpaints or contrast paints, to work from your darker colors to your lighter ones. Meaning you should do the purple before the skin tone. If you get the purple on the skin tone you’re screwed. Whereas if you do the purple first, and get some where the skin will eventually be, you can always clean it up with white or the primer color. And then the skin tone will be so light and translucent that it won’t matter even a little bit if you get some on the purple. This is a general rule for translucent paints. First do metallics. Then do you darkest speedpaint colors, and then finish with your lightest colors. This is show you avoid serious mistakes if brush control ever fails you.
@WatchItPaintIt
@WatchItPaintIt Жыл бұрын
This is a good tip. But the Speedpaint 2.0 is quite opaque. The pale sand does show up slightly on the purple! When I paint I prefer to do the inner bits first and work my way out. You’re right though. I caught some purple on the skin, and there’s no hiding it! But I just painted the mistake white and gently recoloured with the pale sand. I’ve got a lot more nids to paint, I will try purple then sand and see if it’s translucent enough to be the better way to paint!
@douglasmurdoch7247
@douglasmurdoch7247 Жыл бұрын
@@WatchItPaintIt ah good to know. The light colored GSW dipping inks are also quite opaque. I think actual contrast paints might do the best job of being translucent with those lights grays and beiges. Aggaros dunes or skeleton horde are a good alternative if the howling sand is too opaque.
@mau48310
@mau48310 Жыл бұрын
Some slapchop users prefer to go straight to white from black let the contrast colors do their job , and make sure the brush isnt so loaded when you apply the drybrush, legitimately i suggest apllying a circle of the brush on the back part of your palm to make sure the paint is faint enough before hitting the model with it. Made a huge difference for me instead of solely using the paper towel .

I think I touched on having preferences to how to slapchop in the video but you make a really good point, lots of ways to skin a cat! And you can develop your own style and taste. Really nice to hear your suggestions and I’ll be sure to give it a go. I did the Speedpaint very thick! Taking some off the brush might let the slapchop do more of the work. Likewise, a little bit of medium might do a similar result! Thanks for the comment

Just a reminder that the skin for hive fleet Leviathan is pink, rather than pale sand off white.
@WatchItPaintIt
@WatchItPaintIt Жыл бұрын
I saw that. But I looked at citadels guide for painting contrast leviathans and they used an even darker sandy off white! So I figured this was about right for single coat paint? I did consider just super thinning the Princess pink. Maybe I should have!
@thomasblanchard1511
@thomasblanchard1511 Жыл бұрын
You were going in the opposite direction that you should be for dry brushing a zenithal. You should be brushing away from the recesses, not into them. Defeats the purpose of slapchop when you don't actually have any decent contrast. There's a reason there was no difference between your termagants. Slapchop is normally more significant, and doesn't require as many washing steps as you use.

Think it’s just what you’re used to? Been painting with Army Painter paints since I started and I get good results! I actually dislike citadel, it’s so thick and gloopy. Which I know a lot of people are used to but not thinning paints is way more fun :-D Didn’t you just say their Speedpaints are considered good….which is literally what I used in this video :D I think people should use what they like and get on best with, or can afford. And people with different preferences and wallets need to be mindful of hobby shaming!

I think the skin needs more work, especially around the rib cage the paintjob feels really flat. Maybe it´s because of Howling Sand, but it feels like it doesnt create that much contrast with darker recesses. Looks more like a regular Pale sand colour.
@WatchItPaintIt
@WatchItPaintIt Жыл бұрын
Perhaps black slap chopping would suit the skin more with howling sand. Or like you say, perhaps howling sand lacks contrast for you. I find pallid bone has the much stronger contrast option but my personal preference is a more subtle skin. But that’s today! Who knows how I’ll fell tomorrow :-D thanks for the feedback fella, happy painting!
