I bought a 2013 Tesla Model S85 that broke in the parking lot at a friend's office nearly a year ago. Eventually he had it towed to his house where it sat for the better part of the year. I ended up picking it up from him for $7,000 even though it's completely dead and had plenty of other problems. The high voltage battery is on the way and that's a story for another day. Today we're fixing all the other issues the car has for just $125 of parts.

I work on these cars for a living (well, mostly "other" Tesla powered cars like the RAV4 EV and Mercedes B-Class, but lots of Model S's as well), and on this particular vintage of Model S, there is another SUPER IMPORTANT thing to check on it in terms of common failure modes. One of these most common problems we see on these is a failed coolant seal on the rotor of the motor, which can flood the drive unit with coolant internally. We rebuild lot of these motors for this issue at the shop where I work, but often times they can get to a point where they are beyond saving... It's pretty easy to check if the seal is good or not by removing the rotor speed sensor, so long as you can get under the car and remove the rear belly pan. Just look up "Model S speed sensor check" on KZfaq, and the how to video we made should be near the top of the results. Feel free to get in touch with me if you've got any questions. -Alex

Noticed Jr rec'd factory replacement parts, not parts removed from another Tesla. Alex, Elon Musk has made all of his patents available for free, correct? Anyone can build an ev with very little engineering required. Are Tesla's ev parts available wholesale from Tesla under license? It would explain the sudden rise in a new generation of ev producers, like the Vietnamese billionaire noodle maker who just revealed his entry into auto making, beginning with a whole family of new evs.
@Alex_Bessinger

@@mj_aussie_coaster_travels8310 only the 2012-14 RAV4 EV, and 2014-17 Mercedes B250e, both of which were "compliance cars" built on very limited numbers. In the case of the RAV4, they only built them to be sold in California, and only ~2600 were sold (the minimumnumber needed to meet California's ZEV requirements). Many of them have since since been exported all over the rest of the US and even the rest of the world. The B250e was sold in both North America and Europe, and while I'm not totally sure on the number built, I think it's around 8,000... Both cars use a powertrain very similar to an early Model S (like the one in this video), but with a smaller battery. In the case of the RAV4, it was 41.8kWh usable when new, and the B250e had ~27-32kWh usable when new (depending on whether or not the optional "extended charging" button was installed in the car).

Replace the 12V battery or you will continue to experience weird issues with the screen and locking and unlocking. A new 12V battery may even get the suspension going too. You’ve invested a lot into a new traction battery, another $200 for the 12V will make it a lot easier. Finally the car will not charge the 12V battery when in an error state so keep it on a battery tender until you have cleared all errors.

So I know someone said this already but the 12v battery should have been the first thing to be replaced. Would have saved the hours waiting for the car to “turn on”. As someone noted, the high volt battery charges the 12v so you have to keep a battery tender on it. Also I would suggest using the high volt disconnect while working on the vehicle because if you fix enough problems and the high volt comes on you could have problems. Also to open the frunk and back hatch you double click the fob on the corresponding part of the fob (at least on my tesla mx).

Teslas are notorious for being less than easy to work on. Hope you have a lot of patience so you can get through this! That battery won't be easy either unless you have a lift to help and a large mechanism to support the battery into position to put it in. I really want to modify a Tesla like a 1980s car. Manual door and trunk handles, manual unheated seats, install a smaller touch screen. Basically reduce all the power consumption so the car boots and functions every time. Because I'm betting Tesla uses so much juice all the time that it cause fatal electrical issues.

They probably used 9MM because the 10MM sockets grew legs and walked away! 🤣

Double click the trunk and frunk on the fob. It works on mine, might work on yours.

That’s the big problem with modern cars. Just such a pain to work on. If it had of been pretty much any car pre 2000 you could’ve had it fixed within 30 minutes to an hour.
