Hyundai repairs are the best repairs! Whether it's a complete engine swap that only takes a couple hours start to finish or a simple fix like this E-CVVT cover it's always well thought out, cheap, and easy. This 2015 Hyundai Sonata with the 2.4L is setting code P0010 ("A" Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit (Bank 1)). The plug in the end of the camshaft actuator fails and causes oil to enter the cover, creating an intermittent fault with the actuator. To fix it you just need to replace the plug and cover and it shouldn't take long at all.

I've torn down and rebuilt these Theta II engines due to spun rod bearings, semi-seized oil pumps and stuck piston rings. My conclusion is everything starts from the piston rings. Carbon builds up between the piston ring grooves and rings (low quality oil/too long between oil changes), the rings get stuck and no longer scrape oil off the cylinder walls; hence oil burn/consumption. The driver/owner doesn't keep tabs on the engine oil level, the oil pump begins to lose pressure (and the balance shaft bearings start to wear) and finally the connecting rod bearings wear out/spin due to lack of oil from the oil pump. Some tell tale signs: 1. Engine knock on cold starts (pistons are rocking inside the bore until engine warms up) 2. Engine knock on acceleration (piston connecting rod bearings worn or wearing out).

My 2015 Sonata had this exact problem. I took it to the dealer where I bought it new (thankfully) and the factory insisted they change the interior seal only. As you can guess, it didn't fix it. The whole assembly with cover needed replaced just as you showed in the video. They did that and the problem was fixed. All done under warranty (there was some kind of a class action lawsuit that basically forces Hyundai to warrant the engines forever to original owners at least) so no cost to me. Yay! But it was very nice to know exactly what needed done before even going to the dealer. THANK YOU!!!

Definitely will have to check out Hyundai. I like my Volvos, and just recently got a 2004 Toyota Matrix as a first car for my youngest daughter to learn on. I replaced the valve cover gasket on the 1.8 Liter engine with over 210,000 miles, and it looked more like it had 20,000 miles on it. It runs beautifully and is really easy to work on. It's my first Toyota and I can see why people like them.

My mom had a 2015 Sonata 2.0T. Drove like a brand new car up til 88k when it got totaled. Never had the opportunity to work on it because it never really broke. Only did preventative maintenance on it (oil changes, trans fluid, spark plugs, brakes, carbon cleaning etc). Manufacturer warranty covered a radiator fan resistor and a loose steering column. P.S. They had the best A/C of any car too.

Bought a new 2017 Sonata. The car had 230,000 miles on it when I paid it off. It was using maybe 1/2 to 3/4 quart of oil every 3k miles of highway driving. A week after I had the car paid off, it got totaled. A lady driving a giant Toyota land cruiser took the front end. Other than regular maintenance and replacing wear and tear parts and the battery, the car was very dependable.

My '09 Sonata has been the most reliable car I've owned. Bought it at 75,000 miles and I've put over 100,000 miles on it, no major repairs other than the exhaust but I live in the salty northeast so that's kind of expected. Engine and transmission run fine, burns a little oil, maybe a pint every 2 months or so but I just keep on top of it. Paint had been starting to chip over the last year and there's been a problematic exhaust leak up at the very front. Only complaint was the 2012 to 2015 sonata. It was always a pain to change the rotors since when you remove the brake caliper the bottom bolt was stuck between the sway bar link and the wheel bearing. You can't just loosen up the rotor you had to remove the sway bar which involved taking of the shock since the shock is in the way of the sway bar. It only takes 30 minutes each side but bit of a hinde sight for the engineers for just 1 12mm bolt.

Besides of diagnosis and repair your video shows the results with the corresponding driving test, something that several videos from others omit to do. (car can't be considered as being repaired just by turning it On in front of the camera, the test requires driving the car for a while). One of our cars is a Hyundai and yes indeed, the recent Sonata model is very reliable.

I have a 2014 Sonata. I ran my Vin# on the Hyundai web sight and my 2.4 was not effected by any recalls. With 78,000 miles it doesn’t burn any oil. The original owner and I have only ran Full synthetic for the life of the engine. Zero problems. I had a 2004 accent 5 speed and I got 245,000 miles out of it, with only scheduled maintenance. I’m a fan of Hyundais.

We bought a ‘17 Sonata base model for $16,500. We made an offer of $15,500. 😎 It was a “leftover” at the dealership. It had sat on the lot for a year. It had 32 miles on it. It’s a great car. We average 38 mpg on the highway. It’s butter smooth and comfortable. Tons of rear leg room. We now have just over 20k miles on it. 😀

Good luck when you get to 120k. Nothing but a headache from my 2017. It's nice and smooth during the ride, has lots of perks, but is not built for the long haul. I can't get rid of it fast enough.

Loved my 2016 Sonata. The few fixes in the 128kmi were always easy, from a brake fluid reservoir to a mechanical thermostat. Unfortunately its main problem was other drivers crashing into it. Side scrape by a semi, rear ended twice, slid off the road during ice storm, bit the bullet on the 5th accident. Damn Toyota 4Runners!

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento EX nothing but trouble burns oil I have nothing good to say about it only that it's a nice looking SUV. I also have a 2015 hyundai Sonata limited both vehicles are 2.4 engines and this vehicle also burns oil and there's always a check engine light that comes on it always needs something to repair. I would advise anyone that buys these vehicle is to get rid of them when you hit 55,000 miles in order to save you from constant problems. I will never buy these vehicles again if you want to keep your sanity buy a Toyota.

2007 Elantra 2.0l, power everything. $11,900 in 2008 with 25K miles as a rental car. NO problems with 121,500 miles. Just changed oil and it is completely dry under the car, NOTHING leaks yet. Had dealer oil changes until 2010 and then switched to Mobile 1 full synthetic with STP Extended filters since. The clear coat on top the front and rear bumpers are starting to flake some but everything else is near perfect. I always buy good tires and it handles like a go cart. Not as good as my prior Corvettes but really good for a 4 door. 2007 was the best power to weight ratio version. 137HP, 2800 pounds. 36 mpg on 87 octane and enough room for 4 adults and 4 sets of golf clubs. Trans fluid was changed at 30k and then 100K miles, both times with OEM fluid. It isn't flashy or super fast but it is semi fun the drive and seems to be super reliable. The 2007+ was the better ones as they changed a lot in 2007.

Since you like Hyundai so much you should someday see if you can visit their US headquarters in Fountain Valley, CA. I used to drive by the place all the time. There's also some of the best Cars and Coffee meets in the US in Huntington Beach, CA early Saturday mornings and you get guys from the manufacturers, and even designers like Chip Foose, who show up there.

Nice fix Mr. Ross. "Do me a favor though..." Please use/get some mechanic's carts and part's holders. Putting parts on the floor freaks me out. If you haven't yet, you or a compadre will kick a key part and either break it, lose it or trip and fall over it. A nice wheeled cart with some magnetic trays would make me feel much better. "And just remember, if I feel happy you will feel happy too."

You definitely need to get the M12 XC6.0 battery pack for your M12 Stubby. It boosts the torque of your M12 Stubby just enough that its the perfect amount I need from a tool that size. Without it, I found my M12 constantly getting stuck on bolts like yours was.
