Nice tutorial. When talking about that adjustment concerning equality of short and long arcs of the balance, say: eye-SOCK-row-nism.

Agreed on the Fried ("Freed") and de Carle overall information books. They are both excellent references, but they are also both dated in terms of modern practice. In fact, I don't think there are any references that are new, and cover in detail the etachron regulation system, new hairspring collets, new hairspring alloys, and so forth. A few books you didn't mention that I value: One is "The Watch Escapement," by Fried. In this book he explains in great detail the theory of escapements, and it is the only reference I've seen that fully explains lock and unlock angles, drop, adjusting pallets for draw, and testing a new escape wheel. Another great book for theory is "The Theory of Horology," by Raymondin, et al. "Practical Adjusting," and "The Swiss Watch Repairers Manual" by Hans Jendritzki are also highly recommended. Jendritzki's style is less prose and more numbered pictures with explanatory text. The hard part about these is that they come very dear. The upside is if you read German or French they are definitely cheaper and easier to find. And really, TEN lathes? I wonder what that says...

Seems that you have never seen the two books by WJ Gazeley on C&W repair and escapements. These are amongst the best as Gazeley was a real watchmaker, steeped in the trade. Unlike those authors who have merely gained second hand information such DeCarle. There are many such armchair watchmakers around including one who wrote a recent publication you show which I put in the trash.

Thank you for this video! I shall buy most of those books you have listed there! A question, though… I’d like to get into watch refurbishing and reselling. I think doing this will allow me to make money at this wonderful hobby, while I study other watch issues. Is there a book for refurbishing, cleaning, and reselling? A book that would be of interest to someone with these immediate goals?

There are cleaning books…. Pretty much a same as the repair books. I don’t have any books on refurbishing, although all the other books I have had refurbishing parts. I just recommend watching more KZfaq videos has lotta people have refurbishing washes on the channel.

Yes, it is, but also true... Westclocks in Ill USA spent the war making fuses for bombs! They were very intricate mechanisms and it was deemed that the watchmaker industry /clock maker industry was highly suited for such work... Paddy

@@raymondpontremoli4500 That seems to be a theme for US watchmakers. There is a (or was) a big manufacturer of clocks in Illinois (West Clocks, could that be the name?) that made fuses and such devices for war production as well. I guess when your into fine mechanical work... you can as well make detonators and time-fuses and devices of a similar nature , 1940s' style... Paddy

@@ColtonBaik200 George’s book is about making gears and other such parts. He goes into the geometry and math needed to design the right gear, including the design of teeth. Most other books deal largely with repair of parts and not making new parts.

fyi what happened in '44 was that the writing was on the wall for the end of the war and the government knew the g.i.bill was coming so book publishers were looking for instructional books, books on professions, college course books and mail in course work. The army had a watch maker course through the bulova company as did several other US watch brands. Basically "the boys were coming home so let's give them a profession other than trained killer" was the word of the day.

True Story.....When I as at Bowman a customer brought in a music box. It was 20" x 20" x 12" tall. It blew the mainspring. I watched Ed Puchati (The Clockmaking Instructor) make a brand new mainspring from ribbon steel. When they tempered the steel to make it "blue spring steel, they heated it and then quenched it in heavy weight motor oil. They filled the entire third floor of the school with oil smoke... We had to open all the window and doors to get the smoke out. Once the spring was make, it took three guys with the mainspring barrel in a vice to wind the spring into the barrel by hand.

Now that is one cool story. I heard that you can loose fingers working on clocks? I never plan on doing that type of work as it also requires a complete new set of tools. Would have been 😎 going to that watch school as my grandmother was a Bowman. Again cool story.
