I think Rorschach wanted to actually co-operate with Veidt here in trying to clean up the problems in the country, but since the Comedian ridiculed Veidt saying it was a publicity stunt, Rorschach's dislike for Veidt got the better of him thinking he was doing it for fame, neither Comedian or Rorschach knowing that he really did care and what extremes Veidt would go to stop the nuclear crisis. If they listened they all could have tried to work something out.

Yeah - that incident really broke him inside. He started out as a crime-fighter, but the girl's death turned him into a full-on avenging punisher.

Every time I watch this, it just gets better and better. I fuckin' _love_ the _Watchmen_ movie!

I watched this movie for quite some time not even realizing there was hate. I wasn't aware of the peanut gallery of critics. (Mostly comic fans).

That's because the comic book far surpasses the film's storytelling by fully utilizing the medium of the graphic novel to add layers to the story, whether it's through the arrangement of the panels or the choice of color to convey the horror of everyone dying in a bloodbath at the end. The film, stylistically speaking, looks just like an ordinary Zack Snyder film, no more special than the next superhero film in line. THAT is why fans of the comic book hated the film, not because of some superficial comic book accuracy nonsense you people seem to think we geeks complain about.

Because people like light hearted happy go lucky movies fill with jokes and pop culture references

This movie; Unbreakable and the Boys share one element that super films need to embrace- superhero realism. It changes the whole view and demystifies the lore to the cold fact they're not so super. I mean, I love it and this movie is a personal favorite.

Also most of them were pretty much useless for his plans. He realized that super powers win fights but they can't really control or fight the big issues. Except for Dr. Manhattan. In the end Ozzy didn't use any of his own powers to fulfill his plan. He used Manhattan's powers and even then only to accomplish the same effect that human made bombs could. He could have just used bombs but he needed Manhatten as a scapegoat for the plan to work. That's why I love this movie. It's so realistic and practical.

He thought that poisitivity and effort could save the world. He chose to see people and humanity for what he wanted it to be, not what it is. He only came up with his end game once he accepted some of the comedians darkness and cynicism. I'm not saying I agree with the philisophical shift, if he was right, if the comedian was right, or if anyone else should agree. I'm only laying out the story beats.

I don't know if I'd qualify the idea that "people will always want to fight with one another" as being a perfect understanding of the world. I think it was more that Comedian gave it no more thought than that, and was amused that the rest of the team thought they could change anything. Rafe Tizer the problem there as in the real world is the self preservation mechanisms of systems currently in place who are at the root of the problem to begin with. Can humanity be without wars and fighting? Probably, but we would have to redefine what it is to be human and reexamine many of our old beliefs. Two of the main ones in my opinion are the john lock-esque view of ownership along with our lack of understanding of what identity is and how to build a healthy identity. If these two things were reexamined deeply and in an unbiased manner, then the findings taught early on in children, it's possible we could move away from tribalism one day. However simply compounding things on top of what we "know"about these abstract subjects we likely won't.

In the comic it is implied that he knew. He tried talking to her once when she was younger and her mother stopped it by yelling at him. When Silk Spectre was driving away, the second Spectre looked back and saw the Comedian staring at the car driving away while looking sad.

That’s what so good about the story imo. Alan Moore deconstructs the tropes of what the general American psyche believes about superheroes. The Watchmen are not flawless, they aren’t gods among men, but they do have an edge over traditional superheroes and are more interesting because they’re not. They are very flawed humans.

This entire movie and comic, no matter how high praised and high regarded it is, was literally meant to put an end to the Superhero franchise, much like how Scream was meant to put an end to the Slasher franchise.

Ambar Synder has a boring idea of what makes a character cool and I guess CM as a flustered gay man didn’t fit that.

That's the one thing I disagree with Snyder about for this movie. The Minutemen serve an important role in representing the "golden age" of superheroes. They were like celebrities, movie stars. Cap'n Metropolis comes off as naive, over the hill, and unfit for this new superhero world of Atom Bombs, Dr. Manhattan, and gruesome violence. I think he should've been used here.

"Even Dr. Manhattan can't be everywhere at once"-Adrian Veidt There simply are too many nukes. Nuclear stockpiles for each of the two superpowers during the Cold War numbered in the thousands. That's why Adrian says that even if he stops 98% of them, the 2% that slips through can still wipe out the planet. Also, Dr. Manhattan was working for the U.S government as one of two officially licensed "masks", the other one being The Comedian. This means that he was in Nixon's pocket before he exiled himself to Mars and any action done by Manhattan could've sparked a third World War. On top of that, he was becoming increasingly detached and apathetic towards humanity anyways. That's why he couldn't just turn them to flowers. About his control of time, he can see his own past, present, and future. He can't see humanity's future as a whole if he is not involved somehow. Not only that, he has a very linear perspective of time itself. Everything in the timestream has to fit a pattern in a certain order: like a pocket watch. He doesn't take into consideration any variables that might change the outcome along the timeline. Since he wants to prevent any unraveling in time that might change the order of things, he decides to observe and not interfere in it. This could be considered a weakness and one that Veidt exploited successfully. In sum: I don't think there is a plot hole.

In terms of "could", well yes. You are right. Dr. Manhattan is all powerful. There is really nothing he can't do. But (and this is a big BUT), Dr. Manhattan is limited by his own perspective of time and the intrinsic composition of the very fabrics that make up "existence". His linear view of time is intertwined with his determinism brought about by his ability to see past, present and future. This is something that Veidt knew and exploited, outsmarting the most powerful entity in the universe. Dr. Manhattan can do anything, but if that something is not part of the future that he sees, he won't risk altering the timeline. Like I said, he sees everything as parts of a whole: similar to the mechanisms of a pocket watch. Because of his "blindness" throughout the story (thanks to Veidt's tachyon generating), he could see, for example, that someone was going to die in the snow, but not that it was Rorschach. The Tachyons led him to believe that nuclear annihilation was inevitable and unpreventable because it was part of the Earth's future. He could do something, but he wouldn't. Two quotes of Manhattan's that really encapsulates his view are these: "We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings." "Everything is preordained. Even my responses."

because frankly, dr. manhattan stopped caring. remember the scene where the comedian shot the pregnant woman? dr. Manhattan could have easily saved her, but he did nothing to stop it. the comedian told him it was because he was losing his humanity, and could care less if the world turns to dust as he had lost faith in people

Probably thousands of man hours, some of which were likely Ozy's personal time and expertise. It might look like a humble map, but whatever data he had on it would've been painstakingly vetted, coordinated, and simplified to one... perfect... map. The real kick in the teeth though was that he was right. They could fix the crime in the U.S., but not the war in the world. The watchmen wouldn't be enough. Ozy was wrong, or at least only partially right, but the reason he killed the Comedian first was because he could see it. The Comedian was the first person who'd get the joke. Sure, he beat Veidt once in a fight, sure he burned his map, sure he was crass and maybe, just maybe, the Comedian could've been the one to lead the whole group... But the worst was that he was right, and he outsmarted Veidt, despite probably never having read a book in his life. Just the newspaper. Laughing. Ozymandias's namesake comes from the poem which ends, "Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'" Veidt might've even have had the same conclusion the Comedian did. That they wouldn't be enough. Or worse and more likely - he truly believed he could make something that'd outstrip time. But the Comedian took the punchline and didn't doubt it for a minute. It's funny, because the original watchmen were called the minutemen - always buying minutes from inevitable destruction, never stopping it altogether. It's why the Comedian thought it was a joke.

That's exactly it. In the comic this is the only scene where his dialogue is drawn in normal speech bubbles (he's usually shown speaking in warped squiggles) to demonstrate he still has some degree of a stable mentality. It's also worth noting he's wearing his costume differently, with the coat open and the scarf untucked, another sign that at this point he was only 'pretending to be Rorschach' as opposed to when he snapped and 'became Rorschach'.

Caleb Meilink-Smith His point was this hardly deviates from the source material at all. In comparance to Snyders new stuff. Loved the book and This is an amazing movie.

The point seems to be more 'its good because it stuck to the material' which is false in two ways. One I've already listed. The other is that he doesn't manage to display the Comedian and Rorschach in quite as unforgivable a light in this film. That's pretty important. Given that them being unlikeable was actually pretty important, especially the latter of them.

Caleb Meilink-Smith What did i just say. I just said in comparance to his new DC movies. Which is a cluster fuck of different stories. I loved Watchmen since it came out. I didnt buy and read the book until last year.

I finished reading Watchmen the other night and watched this movie the following night and I highly enjoyed it. I did notice some changes, like Ozymandias being the spokesperson instead of Captain Metropolis, but things like that are understandable as movies only have so much time. But I actually like some of the changes like Adrian's endgame using Dr. Manhattan himself instead of the squid-alien thing and Nite-Owl seeing Rorschach die whereas he was absent in the comic. I just don't understand why BvS sucked so badly if Snyder did such a good job with this?
