Exactly. I thought it looked like complete trash - I had NO idea what it was really about. Luckily a summer student I had in my office asked if I'd seen it and when I told him "No, it looked like another cheesy Van Dam style movie (something I'd grown out of) he told it's not and simply that I should go see it. I'm glad I did and I'm glad he didn't tell me anything about it!

West Side Story bombing was a surprise? Not only are modern movie musicals a box office crapshoot, but no one was really asking for an “updated” West Side Story, the classic movie is so beloved. If they tried to redo The Sound of Music, they’d probably run into the same issue, no matter the quality.

Blade Runner 2049 was well received by the American press, and various US publications included the film in their end-of-2017 lists.[126] Critics who saw the film before its release were asked by Villeneuve not to reveal certain characters and plot points in those early reviews.[127] On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of 443 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.2/10. The website's consensus reads: "Visually stunning and narratively satisfying, Blade Runner 2049 deepens and expands its predecessor's story while standing as an impressive filmmaking achievement in its own right."[128] -Oscar dodger (71%-90%)

Furioso: 1. Long time since the last movie. 2. When I go to see a Mad Max movie, I expect Mad Max. 3. As a prequel, there is no real threat or danger for the character because we know she is in the next movie. That blunts a lot of the tension.

Because Hollyweird has a lot of redundancies. For instance, instead of limiting the budget of the caterer and meal costs, it's just a free for all. Also, padding the production cast-adding unnecessary friends and relatives adds to a budget. Locations can be expensive, if you let them. Renting a high dollar location instead of a cheaper location adds to a budget. And according to imdb, there was a lot of ad libbing. Lack of discipline by the director will have a budget spiral out of control. Strong and strict directors, like Otto Preminger, are fewer and fewer today.

The main problem is that most movies in the past could get a second chance through tv (in the UK, The Italian Job had became a classic through traditional Christmas/Boxing Day tv showings), VHS sales and rentals in the 80s and 90s, DVD and Blu-ray sales in the 2000s and 2010s. Now with streaming it is hard for a film to stand out and get another opportunity to reach an audience. Also, I think since the pandemic, people's habits have changed and cinemas have now became more of a special occasion instead of a regular visit. I would think many households during the pandemic invested heavily in the best home Cinema options and monthly subscriptions to streaming services.

While not as aggregious as the last ‘movie bomb list’, there’s still a couple of films here that aren’t actually bombs. A bomb is a movie that fails to make back its production budget, films that manage that but struggle to make the ‘break-even point’ are disappointments

Comparing unappreciated cult classics that aged well over time with a movie that literally just came out seems a bit disingenuous to me. Movies like Fight Club, Willy Wonka, Shawshank Redemption withstood the test of time... Furiosa came out like a month ago.

This happens in tv as well. Shows like Star Trek and Family Guy both got cancelled really early due to low viewership. Only to gain mass popularity in syndication which lead to their respective resurrections. In the case of Star Trek a new show was in the middle of being created after the popularity soared called Star Trek Phase II with most of the original cast slated to return. But ended up shutting down pre-production to reconfigure for the big screen after a little known Sci-fi flick called Star Wars hit theaters.

I liked Furiosa. The prequel was fascinating to see, just wish the volume was more smooth on the streaming services I used to watch it a couple days ago. A couple points in the movie had shifting volume that sounded different or didn’t seem to match characters movements. Don’t know if the theater showings had the same problem

@@StanHalen1936 Nah, the OP has a point. “It’s a Wonderful Life” was a box office bomb. The major reason why it’s a classic is because it accidentally got released into the public domain and TV networks can show it in the Christmas season. In fact, that movie bankrupted it’s studio.

Killers of the Flower Moon flopped because the audience knew it would hit streaming fast. Blade Runner 2049 and Furiosa flopped because both movies waited too long after their first movies and audiences didn’t care about the IPs anymore.

The Thing was killed by its release date. Incredibly, this movie opened the same weekend as "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and the original "Blade Runner!". Maybe the studios were trying to "counter program" the weekend. But all 3 of those movies should have had a weekend to itself.

Actually these movies bombing at the box office isn't all that surprising: 1. Remaking of original classic just for the sake of remaking usually doesn't do well without bringing anything new. Hence it's why West Side Story and Blade Runner 2049 failed at the BO. 2. Too long of a Running time. It doesn't matter if it's a good movie but if it's too long, people aren't too keen staying in theater. This is true for Killers of the Flower Moon, Fight Club and Shawshank Redemption. 3. Overall bad story lines

Then why did the 1939 Wizard of Oz film bomb when it was first released? It wasn’t exactly a remake of an original film although it was an adaptation of a novel. Did it have too long of a running time? Or was it unfortunately released at the wrong time when other more successful films were released at the same date?

As a long time fan of the original West Side Story since I was a child, I was shocked, appalled and mortified that Master Steven Spielberg’s take on the classic musical failed to find an audience. I looovee Fury Road, but wasn’t surprised Furiosa bombed. - (rough) CGI heavy trailer - prequel (several years later) to a 10/10 movie that wrapped things up satisfactorily. - name of movie is a side character in a more niche franchise - title character of franchise not present - recast actress who made Furiosa interesting to watch
