Mark...you are my online mentor since i bought my dslr last 2008. everything you shared in the web are very useful to us as a beginner. 90% of my knowledge in photography comes from you. Thank you very much for your unselfish knowledge and most of the tips are factual and easy to follow and understand. Cheers.

Another approach... 1) Use a dropper to have control over drop size and placement and 2) Use an iPad or laptop screen under the glass with several colorful, full screen images and take your photos without a flash this way.

@slovakianchic Same thing which makes droplets on your car rather than fields of water. This makes it easier to keep your car clean. So I guess RainX works in the same way. It coats the window/glass to make it easier to keep them clean.

@slovakianchic Rainx is a product that leaves a kind of film on your glas or carwindscreen, a film on which the raindrops don't stick, when you drive your car in the rain with a rainx on you windscreen you'll notice the raindrops will flow away wihtout using the wipers. Greets Maurice Belgium

When you export the image as a wallpaper for the iPad you should actually use an aspect ratio of 1-to-1 (square image), so for example 1024x1024 pixels for the iPad 1 and 2, or 2048x2048 for the 3rd generation iPad. That way the wallpaper works in both portrait and landscape mode of the iPad.

Some zoom lenses will creep focal length when placed on a tripod with the lenses pointing down. Gravity causes the lens to change focal length. Also a macro focus distance is needed.

@90jeepgirl before i moved up to pocket wizard remotes for my off-camera strobes, i was pretty happy using flash cables. they come in loads of different lengths and can be had for a reasonable price. you'll want to know the sync-speed on your camera (look online or in the manual) and be sure not to go over it if you're manually setting your aperture/shutter speed and flash settings. feel free to ask any more questions you may have - we all started somewhere :)

@90jeepgirl :) creative experimentation is the soul of photography. try using any bright light you have- try using something to direct the light towards what you're shooting - a sheet white paper or posterboard folded into a cone works. just remember the angle of incidence he mentioned to keep the light from reflecting directly into your lens. didn't mean to imply you had to buy anything - i shot from 1999 through 2008 using only available light. was great - more lights just add options.

@90jeepgirl i was also assuming you had an off camera light source. you could use any bright fixed light, technically, and play with your camera settings in aperture priority or full manual mode to get a similar effect. if you're looking for your first off camera strobe, i can't say enough good things about the LumoPro LP160 quad sync manual flash. was my first, and now i have three in my camera bag :)

@slovakianchic If you go to your local auto-supplies shop and ask for something to help the water run off the windscreen of your car they will suggest something like the above. When I used to work washing cars we would also occasionally use high shine polish (meant for paintwork) on the windows to make the water run off better. When the water has nowhere to run you will get this kind of effect. The polish must be completely removed, preferably with soft mutton-cloth or something similar.

@bertomartin Thanks for the information! I'm just trying to create some different images on a tight budget without having to buy anything additional. I'm in school right now and images like this that I can create will go a long way with my assignments for my classes. I appreciate your taking the time to answer my question and above all not make me feel stupid. Any other ideas that don't involve buying additional equipment would be greatly appreciated.

Another fun way to photograph water droplets is through your car's sunroof on a rainy day. Works well even with an iPhone camera.

The thing with macro lenses is that they are super expensive for beginners... for now I'm using a retro-adapter, way less freedom , but only 25 bucks =) the rest will come later

This may sound like a stupid question to most on this site, but I'm just an amateur photographer and don't have all the great equipment that Mark does, so my question is, can I recreate the same type of images without having the remote flash and macro lens?
