It is both an art and science when it comes to writing estimates for water damage. Knowing your cost isn't enough... you have to understand the ART OF DELIVERY!
Yes, sales has made its way into the estimating process.
If you don't understand what I am talking about... then you need to watch this video.
We explore the various gradients or thresholds that customers have and use to make buying decisions.
Guess a number to high and they may say no.
Guess a number too low and you lose money (boo).
There is a sweet spot and you need to find it.
I promise you this... until you master the ART of estimating, you WILL be leaving money on the table.
There are some important variables that need to be nailed down before we can write a solid estimate.
Is this a self pay or insurance job?
Is the job large loss or is it a normal water damage under $15k
Details matter!

@@MrStandridge i agree one thing that drives me nuts is insurance claims adjusters want more detailed quotes. You provide them and they ignore most because insurance jargon is not used. Knowing more detail of what they are looking for or resources would be great

What do you think about them leaving machines running 45 days, only tore one room, insulation from crawlspace. small bathroom, a wall and partial kitchen. Said it would be maybe 20 at the highest. Charged 80k… I mean.. that’s almost a third of our house. Multiple contractors came in saying they were out of their minds.

Xactimate shows pricing per line item. I know you did not confirm that but the way you explained it and noting multiple times that insurance wants to see price per item implies it doesn’t.

What if equipment was only running for 4 days and they are charging for 7. Workers were not able to pickup for 3 days after. I was told to unplug all equipment after day 4 and just set equipment aside. Am I responsible for paying all 7 days?

you will have to talk to the company you hired about that.

If the contractor is unable to pick up the equipment due to their own scheduling issues then you shouldn't have to pay for that equipment. At least in my company that's how we operate

Yes and no I assume you mean reconstruction? We have used the same scope system with recon as well as mitigation It is possible that we would use Xactimate for reconstruction. we would not use Xactimate for mitigation

Some mitigation companies won’t provide a quote to send to insurance. They say, “we do the job then bill insurance”… Is this common practice? We had one actually tell us he can’t do anything until a public adjuster comes out and recommended a “PA company”. Because our insurance is saying that the contractor should be providing a quote to work off of.
@TheRestorationContractor
@TheRestorationContractor 7 ай бұрын
we never worked with a PA in 10 years. I'd suggest you talk to other companies

@@TheRestorationContractor thank you so much. Since the comment, we reached out to another mitigation company and they had 0 issues providing us a quote! It seems some of these mitigation companies just want to maximize their payout - or maybe I’m wrong!

@@CREAOOfficial100% we are being billed like 60% more than what they said they wanted to charge. There are definitely good companies.. some are out to rob.

@CREAOOfficial it's a mix of both. We don't like to give estimates for 2 reasons. 1 price shoppers like to get the estimate try to get paid, and do the mitigation themselves. I will give a free estimate but an itemized written quote is for when I'm hired or paid for the time. 2nd most times there is no way to tell how much. We just had a job where behind the walls they had the old drywall and molded paneling. We had to supplement for about 4500 it was double the work. You never know if it's drywall or drywall over plaster with two layers of tile floor under the carpet so the 1st estimate is just a draft and most times goes up.

So here is what we do... we place a link to the photos in the notes section of the estimate and invoice. They can access the photos from the link. We used Google Drive to store photos for years before moving to a photo application software. Let me know if you need more help 615-685-2128

Cat 1 is essentially rainwater Cat 2 is gray water Cat 3 is poop water. If you have rain water dripping from your roof, it’s cat 1. If you have a sewage back up, it’s Cat 3. That’s why the prices are different.
