I went for a walk in a river; looking for anything old and interesting. I found some tunnels that I wasn't expecting, a few mysteries as yet unresolved, and had a nice day in the sun, and the dark, and the water.

I'm putting this video out a bit early because I'm heading off tomorrow for 2 weeks holiday. Where I'm going doesn't have consistent internet, so I might not be able to answer many comments... I will of course, still appreciate them and read them when I can.

It's fairly varied... my shortest mudlarking video was shot in half an hour, including a round up on the beach. Dump site videos usually take between 1 and 4 hours, and river walking videos usually take at least 4 hours (plus the time to travel there and back). It's all dwarfed by the time it takes to edit the footage. 🙂

What a great long ramble up your river/stream! Thank you for your efforts! Love the red glass, the wee boat (can't believe you plan to release it, but then again, I enjoy collecting found things and curiosities, so I think I'd try to find an owl... maybe a pussy cat... a runcible spoon... gaze happily at it all as they gather dust over future decades... I'm happy to watch you gather your copper wire and brass bits. I scrap (I can no longer lie to myself about future jewelry/crafty/artistic endeavors) and make a decent pocketfull every month or so. Lead, brass, aluminium, copper and copper wire. I appreciate your mission: doing your best to carry out the worst of what you see along the way. We do what we can. There's nothing hypocritical about trying. Hope your holiday was/is relaxing and- dare I say fun?! Be well- and cheers from Maine!

Thanks Tom you are a wordsmith if that is the correct way to say it. Much of your descriptive chats are poetry to my ears. The camera work with the reflections and the timing that you use while you narrate is awesome. Just well done.

*Kia ora Tom, Have a awesome holiday break. BTW you missed a broken shovel at 4.27. I love the fidget triangle stone, even I would carry one in my pocket to fidget with. At 36.30 how does a concrete mixer end up in a river - stolen or dumped!!! If you can remember exactly where it was then contact the local scrap-metal folks in the area & they will collect it, less rust in the river & they make money. I enjoy the scenery shots too and the glistening water as it ripples along on my 27inch monitor on full screen too.*

Kia ora Andrea. I saw the broken shovel, but didn't mention it... I was enjoying the light on the ripples of the water too much, they were a bit mesmerizing. I think the concrete mixer was dumped, tipped down the hillside, and rolled down to the waters edge... it's not the first one I've found. I don't know why people would dump them when it's probably as easy to get a scrapper to pick them up, and not all that difficult to take it to a scrap yard personally and get a bit of money for it. I don't think it'll be easy for the scrap metal hunters to get it out now, it would take a team of 3 at least to lift it back to the roadway, too many trees in the way to drag it out. I could certainly point them in the direction of a few, very heavy pieces of metal in the rivers that would be easier to get, so I might see if I can make contact with one. Glad to know the water looks good on bigger screens, and thank you so much for the Superthanks (I'm guessing that that was you!?). It's the first time anyone's done that on my channel, and made me smile. 🙂

That ceramic "nozzle" looks like a bushing or lead-in insulator from a terminal box or thin wall... Wire either used to be bare or coated in primitive rubber or paper... As a result, the ceramic was a barrier between the wire and steel casing. That thick twisted steel wire is from armoured cable. Cable thieves burn the plastic coating off leaving the steel armour behind and taking the copper... Hence why this is regularly found. Seem to be lots of damaged insulators in that river which is interesting... Probably once had telegraph poles along the side which would be given away by guy wire anchors in the ground. I'd love to have access to such fruitful watercourses, but I agree with the sick feeling when I see plastic in them. Another great video and I still love your theme music!

Thanks Artie. Not my finest filming; I tried to fit 2 and a half hours of painting into 52 seconds of talking... and it was a bit fast. Oh well, I'll hopefully start work on filming the final project when I get back from vacation (which is going well so far) 🙂

You have truly outdone yourself this time! But I so worry about you when you go towards the dark tunnels...alone? As much as I love the adventures, I wouldn't be comfortable w/o carrying a bit of security. The nozzle looks to have dispensed the white wiggly swirls on the chocolate cupcakes! The pick looks like a gold miner's most valuable tool! I love the little boat!! Wonder about the little boy who cried when he went home without it. And the dad disappointed, never daring to show to show it. And maybe his new boat was bigger and of course, better. Wild garlic! I think they look similar and could be what we call "ramps!" They grow in deciduous mixed forests in the NC foothills. I'd love one day to go to one of the early spring festivals they have. Many foods (ice cream too) made from ramps! I'd love even more to grow my own! Sorry to digress! A very enjoyable journey! Most impressive was the violin(?) rendition of your larking theme song! Gorgeous!

Yes, so far, all my tunnel explorations have been alone. I've identified a few where I'll need company for safety... have a friend who's interested to go on one of his few days off work. And yes, wild garlic is also known as Ramps here too... makes a wonderful pesto. Haven't tried mixing it into ice-cream, but that does sound interesting. They do grow quite well in a shaded part of our garden, I think we introduced them after I accidentally picked a bulb when foraging. It was a cello rendition of the theme tune, I found someone on Fivver to do it. 🙂

Another calming river walk Tom. I love the walks filming the rippling water surfaces. They have a texture of their own. I’m surprised you didn’t take a taste of the wild garlic. Thanks Dorothy, I did have a bit of the wild garlic. I might be filming one video here, but I've got enough videos stacked up to last at least a year, so I won't feel too bad if I don't manage it... I have at least had a first flight of my drone, a bit of practice at flying it, and I'll get the kayak out for a paddle around the moat of a ruined castle some time and hope to try and film some of that. 🙂

A great video as always. Stop and start as many times as you need, your health and well-being is your priority. It is indeed terrible to see all the rubbish, my boys and I also pick up rubbish, even on dog walks. It all helps, (we hope). Love the tiny pick and the little polish stones. Thanks Linda. I don't mind hearing criticisms, and ones such as suggesting I'm a bit hypocritical are fine. I get off lightly usually, I've only had a couple of really nasty comments in the 3 years I've been doing this; most youtube creators get far more than I do.

Stone Mason's pick, but there are so many variations. In the interest of your algorithm. My great grandfather used to have a water powered sausage plant just outside of Victoria British Columbia. It was on a short stream appropriately called "Mill Stream." When I was very young I discovered the ruins and the water wheel. I begged my dad to bring it home to the farm as a memorial. The Mill was made of both bricks and native rock. I was so young, I could do nothing. I used to go down there alone and try and feel my great Grandfather. It was so peaceful and quiet. Now it is all under a giant subdivision.

Thank you for clearing up a mystery for me- I have found some of those ceramic triangles on my beach here in the East Neuk of Fife and had no idea what they were . Loved this walk upstream and through peaceful woodland . I liked the wee boat you found and the partial marble, marble finds always give me a little jolt of pleasure.

So nice to watch a video of yours again, Tom. I hope you're having a wonderful, restful vacation. I was so exhausted when I started watching this video on July9th that I had to stop it and save it to Watch later. Today is the 10th, I am well rested, and thoroughly enjoyed your river ramble from the beginning. Your rusty implement looks like a cross between a full-sized pick ax and a large rock hammer. Unless you intend for it to be used again, I think just a little spit & polish would suffice. I'd much rather see your energy directed towards that dragon sculpture. It's selfish of me, I know, being as I was born in the Year of the Dragon. ;) As always, your guitar playing, and Rowena's cello music provided the perfect mood interludes. Keep looking after yourself, Tom. You are very much valued in my world.

Thanks Annie. I think it was the heat that really wore me down on this outing... I prefer autumn, and spring days that feel like spring instead of summer🙂. And of course, I'm getting older, less nimble... and my fitness is never at its best in Spring, it fades away over winter when I don't get out walking as often, or for as far.

Your videos are works of art, I always enjoy seeing them. I especially love the birdsong, the sounds of the water, your soothing voice, and the music you play. An interplay of light and shadow, mixed with music calms my heart and head. You should seriously look into reading books on audio! The hammer looks similar to my father’s old welder’s slag hammer, used for knocking off the slag from welded metal. Thank you very much for your videos, I’m a new subscriber and slowly working my way through your back catalogue.

A wonderful video as always. I sympathise with the depressing effect of horrendous plastic pollution. I, too, suffer from it. But, of course, taking any plastic from rivers and streams helps. You can’t take it all. It’s impossible…. But looking at what you have taken may help. You should keep the trophy to remind yourself that you’re an Eco Champion! x

That water for me viewing this on one of the most hottest days of the year looks deliciously cold and a delight to wade in. I was standing with my wellies on in the river Thames yesterday it didn't cool my boots or my feet down too much and the water wasn't that cold either.

Bravo Tom, another fantastic walk in the river. I think the hammer could be a minerologists hammer for taking samples. I am always amazed at the brickworks and how well those bridges have aged.Have a great time on your vacation . I think i will take the opportunity to catch up on some of your past videos.

That capped off pipe at the end of the small, narrow, claustrophobic tunnel was done by a very small skinny person with long arms or an trained octopus? The narrow shovel is for trenching. The small hammer could be what is used by a brick mason for scoring and breaking bricks. I believe its a Brickhammer. Tom, are all the streams and rivers in towns flanked by stone walls? It seems that every video I see from Brittan, the streams and rivers are walled on either side. That had to be a massive and expensive undertaking! Beautiful countryside and waterways.

I don't particularly like really tight spaces... like tunnels you can't crawl backwards out of if needed... so most caving in the UK is beyond my comfort zone. But, no, I'm not claustrophobic... I don't panic or suffer anxiety issues with dark small spaces. Haven't actually found anything that I have a phobia of... rational fears, but not irrational. I'm really quite lucky in that regard. 🙂
