i assert that the only way to have an effective rowboat or sailboat is to have the transom emerge out of the water and not drag. The opposite is needed for a planing outboard. You need an immersed transom below the waterline. The ONLY way to have an acceptable hull for all three is to have the transom out of the water when rowing and sailing, but in the water when running an outboard. Thus you need rocker on the bottom and and the run of the bottom aft needs to be straight back behind that deepest point of the rocker to make a good planing hull. The boat needs to squat a bit to plane well, and to sil more balanced with the bottom of the transom emerged to row or sail well. I have only seen one design do that (I actually built it, and when not overloaded it worked well) But this boat is not it. I can plainly see that it drags its transom when sailing and rowing which is not necessary.

Hi Paul - thanks for your thoughts. This boat is in fact designed with rocker like you describe, and it does sail and motor very well. However the mold has not aged well and so the boats that come out of it no longer have the degree of rocker that they used to, so we're not building any more from the old mold. We're currently undergoing a redesign of the boat to increase floatation in the stern to better support modern motors, and improve the rocker. New version of the Lobster Boat should be out in 2023.

Hi there nice boat! I’ve just bought a 2023 Darragh 15ft boat that looks quite similar (unsure what your hull looks like) but wondered if it would also take a 15hp? It came with a 6hp would would rather the extra speed if required. Thanks

Hi Devlin - unfortunately there's no way for us to know that. The HP rating is determined by US Coast Guard calculations based on how much floatation is built into the boat and where it is situated.
